Sonu Niigaam's: Online Music Workshop Gets Tremendous Response !!

November 30, 2010: Sonu Niigaam, the noted playback singer of Bollywood is as famous online as he is offline for his very innovative techniques in singing and the kind of variety that he brings in by his tremendous power to sing and emulate just about any singer under the Sun.

This singer has already made a mark by singing in Tees Maar Khan in 40 to 50 different voice tones, and has also recently thought of conducting an online workshop on music. Thus, recently he had posted on his page that he would be conducting an online workshop on the 3rd of December, little knowing that it would create a great problem for him, as he will be flooded with so many messages from several people who will want to join the free work shop.

Reportedly, the singer was over whelmed by the tremendous response and thus he posted back that since the response was so over whelming, he would not be able to conduct it on the 3rd, as the venue would have to be much bigger than he had anticipated.

However the singer has been offered help by professionals in the field like Wiz crafts and GIMA or the Global Indian Music Awards group in going ahead with his idea in an organized and professional manner.

So if you happen to be one of those who wish to participate, keep an eye for more on this news.

Help For Old & Ailing Musicians !!

Pretty busy with the upcoming IMA Awards scheduled early next year, veteran musician Pandit Jasraj’s daughter Durga Jasraj is also making sure that other projects undertaken by her pet organization (Indian Music Academy) are getting her undivided attention. Durga is glad that her organization has been able to help old and ailing musicians in the country to get urgent medical attention and says that several corporate companies have come forward to providing financial help.

Durga says, “We get people writing in to us from several parts of the country telling us about the plight of needy musicians. Our organization has been looking after the welfare of such people and providing them with free medical attention.” She also adds the several trusts and doctors have been appointed to aid the case. “Under this same category, several open heard surgeries have been performed and several cases of dialysis are also been carried out in several hospitals. There are some dialysis patients who are undergoing treatment since the last one and half years. So, there is no cap on the number of years of treatment.”

Durga however says that to keep the entire process transparent, instead of handing the money for the medical treatment to the ailing musicians, IMA sends the money directly to the hospitals.

Talking about the ongoing preparations for the IMA Awards, Durga says that 2,726 applications have reached the organisation that includes entries from artistes and singers like Shaan, Sonu Niigam, Shankar Mahadevan and many more. Talking about the unique feature of the awards, she says that this is the first time for any music award in the country that musicians don’t need to depend on their producers to send their music samples. “Instead they can do so directly,” she ends.

Sonu Niigaam is hitting the high notes!

When Sonu Niigaam quit micro blogging site Twitter he did that with a promise to host a live workshop for music lovers, absolutely free of cost.

And true to his word, that’s what the singer’s doing. Sonu recently resurfaced on Twitter, only to announce a workshop that he plans to organise in Mumbai. There are also plans for a live webcast of the same.

However, Sonu’s plans might need a little re-planning, since, while the singer was expecting a crowd of around 20 to 30 persons, there’ve been almost 600 who’ve confirmed participation. And though Sonu’s overwhelmed with the unexpected turnout, he does admit that he may have to re-think the venue now.

“I am humbled by the response. We were planning to have the workshop in Mumbai on December 3. I don’t think that we’ll change the date, but we will definitely need a bigger venue.”

And according to reports there are not only people from across India, but also music lovers from overseas keen to participate in a live music session with the singer, who’s riding high on the success of the title track for Tees Maar Khan, having sung it in 56 voices.

“Yes, it’s true. We’ve had enquiries coming from places like New Jersey and UK for the workshop. As soon as we arrange for the venue we will make the formal announcement,” confirms Sonu.

Talking about what inspired him to conduct such a workshop, he adds, “I think many times all we need is a little guidance and that’s all I’m trying to give, show others the direction — which I wish I had during my younger days.”

Play That Kannada Mix

We’ve heard tracks in Bollywood as well as Tamil and Telugu industries being remixed and added to the soundtracks. With Sanju Weds Geetha, Sandalwood joins the trend with its first official mix. The title track, sung by Sonu Niigaam, has been remixed by DJ TT.

Says TT, “I was approached by Nagashekhar (the film’s director), who wanted to do something novel with the soundtrack. He asked me to mix the track keeping in flavour the original vocals. We had a couple of sittings and here’s the track today.”

Lead actor, Ramya, is seemingly elated. “We’ve seen Tamil films having such amazing mixes of songs like Where Is The Party Tonight. I’m glad that we’ve finally got the first official mix in Sandalwood. Trust me, when I first heard it, I couldn’t stop tapping my feet,” says Ramya, who along with Nagashekhar and co-star Srinagara Kitti are partaking in some unique promotions.

From reality shows to dates with Ramya to the lead pair walking the ramp and attending major events in the city. “The film is something that will touch your hearts. We’re continuing a story that was one of the biggest blockbusters in Kannada film history, Shankar Nag’s Geetha. The film is heart-warming and I can assure you of a good watch. This is why we’re going all out to promote the film and draw people’s attention towards it,” says Ramya.

Where Are The Guests ???

Gutka blue-bloods Mayank Jain and Monika Arora, at whose wedding superstars were to shimmy, asked Salman, SRK and Katrina not to perform at the 11th hour

A few days ago, it was reported that the Mayank Jain - Monika Arora wedding was going to be the most extravagant celebration in years: our local stars, for one, were summoned at astronomical sums, to get jiggy with it; Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif being some of the A-listers who would dazzle relatives and family friends.

However a twist of fate spoilt this showstopper, nixing the chances of these three stars to make some good money, unless they have already been paid. Salman and Katrina, who were meant to boogie (separately, mind you) on Wednesday at the Gutka baron's mehfil, and SRK, who might have done a chaiyya chaiyya to select guests - all failed to show up.

Sallu was en route to Mumbai airport when he did a U-turn, Katrina, who had reached Delhi on Wednesday, also booked a flight back to Mumbai. Why?

Instead of this glitter, one spotted actors like Zayed Khan, Jacqueline Fernandes, Neil Nitin Mukesh, if you get the (small) picture. Other luminaries at this event included Sonu Niigaam, Mugdha Godse and Anjana Sukhani.

Says a source, "Perhaps something transpired that led the families to say 'No' to the top actors." Did the Aroras and Jains, both Gutka barons with bottomless pockets, want to cut down on the expenses? Was this display of wealth suddenly considered vulgar by authorities, thus prompting this forced 'austerity'? SRK, Salman and Katrina remained unavailable for comment. No high tea officials bothered them on a quiet Thursday.

The Spirit of Doon !!

What do Vikram Seth, Nandan Nilekani, Kamal Nath, Karan Thapar, Tarun Tahiliani and Abhinav Bindra have in common? Well, apart from being highly successful in their area of work, they all are Doon School alumni or ex-Doscos as they would like to call themselves.

The school that has an illustrious list of alumni, recently celebrated its 75th anniversary. And to commemorate the occasion, the school came out with a music album – "The Spirit of Doon". While the likes of Sonu Nigam, Prasoon Joshi and Yash Raj Studios came together to collaborate with the IIT Kanpur alumni team to create an IIT-K anthem on the occasion of their golden jubilee, the Doon School Old Boy's Society (DSOBS) managed to get lyricist Gulzar, music composer Bhajan Sopori and his son Abhay Sopori as well as singer Suresh Wadekar, all together, for their school's anthem.

"DSOBS is very proud and delighted to present, "The Spirit of Doon", as a part of our 75th year celebrations. The album is a mix of musical offerings ranging from folk to classical, and traditional to modern," said Kanwar Vipin Malhotra, president, DSOBS.

He further added, "This album is an attempt to present a facet of the spirit of Doon. Doscos from different age groups and cities across India, came together to participate in the making of this album."

Talking about his experience of working on the album, music composer Abhay Sopori, said, "When we started working on the album, the idea was to distribute it only amongst the Doon School students and its alumni. But once the product started taking shape, we thought, why not make it large? That's when we brought in sponsors and decided to have a commercial launch as well. It is a beautiful work of creativity. Here's to saluting the 75 year old legacy of memories."

Not A Pleasant Tune

Many Kannada singers are unhappy with the unfair treatment meted out to them by the film-makers, especially when it comes to payment. The industry pays local talent far less than what is paid to singers engaged from outside the State.

Even the demand for the local talent has decreased forcing many to take up alternative career and sing only as a hobby. For example, if Sonu Nigam is paid a lakh for a song, the local singer only gets Rs 25 thousand for singing the same song. “It’s the discretion of the producer,” says music director Veer Sampath.

“The producers want good quality music and give us a budget with which we have to manage. When we talk about quality and variety, I rarely find such singers here. While there are a few extremely good voices, I can’t use them for all the songs. But when it comes to singers like Yesudas, his voice can be adapted to different styles. So why not spend a little more and get the best than settle for an average voice,” he adds.

Kaustub, a singer from the City, feels that the craze for singers from outside has always been there. “It’s not that there is a lack of talent here, there is just a craze to get singers from Bollywood to croon Kannada songs. Many of the outside singers have become so popular that the demand only keeps increasing, there is not much we can do about it,” he states. Generally, the producer, director and the music director sit together and discuss the picturisation of the song and the kind of voice that would be required for the sequence.

A lot of stereotyping goes into play and popular music directors are restricted to use only certain voices who have given them hits before. Mano Murthy, the music director says that he has fallen into that frame many a times.

“Many producers approaching me automatically presume that Jayanth (Kaikini) would write the lyrics and Sonu Nigam and Shreya Goshal would sing the songs,” he says. “In all my films I make sure to engage one local talent to sing a song. Unfortunately, there are a very few of them who are serious about their career. Moreover, when it comes to publicising the music of the film, importance has to be given to well-known singers from outside,” says Mano.

The trend of using singers from outside is there in all the industries.

Kavita, a singer from Kerala, says that opportunities to sing in her mother tongue Malayalam are very few, so she is looking forward to sing in other industries like Tamil and Kannada.

Sonu Niigaam Creates World Record With 54 Voices

Believe it or not, ace playback singer Sonu Niigam has done the unbelievable. The singer has sung in 54 voices for the same song in Farah Khan’s forthcoming comedy-thriller ‘Tees Mar Khan’

Sonu verifies, “Yes, that is true. I have sung the title track of ‘Tees Maar Khan’ in 54 voices. Maintaining a consistency in the voice and the pitch which is not yours can be very tedious.”
Filmmaker Farah Khan tells, “Only a versatile singer like Sonu can pull it off. We will approach the Guinness book of world record and if we are not successful, then I’m sure it will be listed in Limca Book of Records.”

Wonder how the idea originated? It is said that while trying different versions for the same song and Farah’s writer husband, who has also done the music for the movie, Shirish Kunder suggested that they merge all the versions together. “After I recorded several versions, it was difficult to choose any one. So Shirish incorporated all of them in one song. I am the chorus as well as the singer for this one, and all have still managed to sound different,” includes Sonu.

The singer apart from singing in several female voices has sung the song with a Japanese, Spanish, Arabic, French and several such accents. “But the one I enjoyed the most was singing in Akshay’s (Kumar) voice. In fact, I sound so much like him that even Farah couldn’t make out the difference,” Sonu tells with a smile.

As per common knowledge, no other singer has done this before for the big screen. Sonu Niigam is sure gunning for a world record!

Sonu Niigaam Sings In 54 Voices For Tees Maar Khan !!

This one’s sure to get Sonu Nigam in the record books. The singer’s recently sung in 54 voices for the same song. No mean feat considering this required him to not only sing in different male voices, but also female voices. Confirming this, Sonu says, “Yes, that is true. I have sung the title track of Tees Maar Khan in 54 voices.” Admitting that it wasn’t easy, Sonu adds, “Maintaining a consistency in the voice and the pitch which is not yours can be very tedious.”

Talking about how the idea originated, the singer revealed that they were trying different versions for the same song and it was music composer Shirish Kunder’s idea to merge all the versions together. “After I recorded several versions, it was difficult to choose any one. So Shirish incorporated all of them in one song. I am the chorus as well as the singer for this one, and all have still managed to sound different,” adds Sonu.

The singer apart from singing in several female voices has sung the song with a Japanese, Spanish, Arabic, French and several such accents. “But the one I enjoyed the most was singing in Akshay’s (Kumar) voice. In fact, I sound so much like him that even Farah couldn’t make out the difference,” he smiles.

So is he aiming for a place in the book of records? “Well, we hadn’t recorded the song with that in mind, but now that we have done it; I think Farah and Shirish are considering sending it for the record books. I don’t think any singer has done that before on the big screen, so yes, I will keep my fingers crossed for this one,” smiles Sonu. Well, that’d be another feather in the Bollywood cap too, so here’s wishing him all the luck.

HAPPY DIWALI & A HAAPY NEW YEAR TO ALL MEMBERS & VISITORS OF SONU NIIGAAM & ME

Sonu Niigaam Is Tees 'Maar Khan' In Singing !!

Sonu Niigaam Leads Singers Association of India (SAI)

Until now, attempts to bring together film and non-film singers under a common umbrella have been in vain. But the Singers Association of India (SAI), a group which was announced at the innaugural function of the Global India Music Awards, held in association with the Hindustan Times, is meant to fill that void. “We have been trying to form this group for five years now but it couldn’t take off earlier because there was serious negativity inside,” says singer Sonu Nigam, who is ecstatic about the formation of SAI.

The singer says that people have now been made to understand that the purpose of the association is to serve “no one’s personal agenda.” He adds, “It’s for the betterment of our seniors and our forthcoming music generation. The organisation will shelter everyone’s rights.”

Many singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Hariharan, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shaan, Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Sukhindwer Singh, Kailash Kher and Alka Yagnik have already pledged their support to the association.

How will the forum help singers? “It will help us bring everyone together, get rid of politics and take care of each other. Senior musicians have faced issues due to lack of care and have been lost in oblivion. Through this forum, we also plan to reach out to them,” says the singer.

Did they face issues with music composers and lyricists? “Now music composers and lyricists are working in tandem with us. All musicians of the country will be a part of this group,” says Nigam.

For Me, Live Performance Is Incomparable To Anything: Sonu Niigaam

Bollywood playback singer Sonu Niigaam says nothing gives him more pleasure than live performances.

'For me, a live performance is a high that is incomparable to anything else musically. For me, it's a three hour-long orgasm,' Sonu said in a press statement.

The singer is set to perform for a live show in Birmingham Nov 13 and in London's Wembley Arena Nov 14.

'You have to be vocally, physically, mentally and spiritually fit and involved for a perfect one. That's the clear test of a true singer. Every other platform can be manipulated with, but not live shows. That's why I get so involved during my performances,' he said.

Niigaam, who has belted popular numbers like 'Yeh dil', 'Panchhi nadiyaan' and 'Main hoon na', says his performances have improved overtime.

'Last time I came to Britain was for the legendary Rafi Resurrected tour. People worldwide still talk about that one. Meanwhile, my regular live performances have gone to another level,' he added.

Leicester-based promoter Jayesh Kotak, who is organising Niigaam's performance in Britain, feels the show will eclipse Oscar winning composer-singer A.R. Rahman's concert held in London's O2 Arena, earlier this year.

'Although A.R. Rahman is a genius, these shows will be a lot better because Sonu will be on stage for three hours. Unlike Rahman, who handed over most of the singing duties to unknown singers and only performed his own songs, Sonu will be on stage the whole time,' said Kotak.
