Kavita Celebrates Sonu Niigaam’s Birthday

I would like to welcome all the readers and listeners of KavitaChhibber.com to a special edition of our emag. Today is July 30th 2009 and it’s my pleasure once again to wish Sonu Niigaam a very happy birthday on not just my behalf but millions of fans world wide, especially those who have written in by the thousands.
Last year when I did a surprise birthday special for Sonu, it was something that I just impulsively decided to do, because the more I got to know him, the more I could see what a special man he is..
Sonu’s persona goes far beyond the music that has made him a household name across the continents. It’s evident in his sense of humor, his sharp wit and a deep thinking, intelligent mind. He is an outstanding mimic-I also don’t know many men who can sing duets all by themselves-but he sure can! It is not surprising then why he is so loved. It is evident by the packed arenas of screaming fans that throng to his concerts. It’s also evident in the comments we receive about him from his fans.

Sonu Niigaam On Explosion 2009

"I have ceased to exist," says Sonu Nigam He is rehearsing for Explosion 2009, to be held at the Trump Taj Mahal Arena August 1; he takes off some minutes to talk about the show to be held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, detailing how it differs from his previous concerts.

"It is god who is working through me for this show. I wonder if anyone should even call it my show," he says.

He says god is an invisible partner in all his shows, whether it is a solo show or a concert with other artists -- in this instance, Sunidhi Chauhan, and Hard Kaur, the British Punjabi pop star.
"But this time," Nigam adds, "I particularly feel that god is directing me in everything I am doing, even the smallest move or gesture is coming from elsewhere; I am sure it is from god."

And then there is the question of rashi.

"I am a Leo, and so are Sunidhi and Hard Kaur," Nigam says, chuckling. "Imagine then the vibrant atmosphere on the stage. This is the first time I am performing with the lead artists in a show all of whom are Leos. This factor alone is enough to create unique magic."

Explosion 2009 is the only major Bollywood show this summer in America; in fact, it could be the only big show of its kind the entire year. The year has seen so far Asha Bhosle perform in Philadelphia and a few cities. Kailash Kher , who had a rousing performance at the Brooklyn Prospect Park, is going to several American cities too, and Jagjit Singh had a stellar performance in a few cities.

In a year without a star driven show, Explosion 2009 not only stands out but could also create quite an excitement.

A typical Sonu Nigam show is a mixture of his old and new hit songs, a tribute to his idol Mohammad Rafi, mimicry, and electrifying dance movements. Occasionally his father too appears in the concert, singing a Rafi song or two.

"I never really reveal what is in my new shows," Nigam says. "But there will be surprises. Even those who have seen many of my past performances should feel that I have given something new each time. That way, they have reasons to attend my concerts next year, and years after that."

He has performed across America and Canada for over a decade, at times with the legend Asha Bhosle, at the beginning of his Bollywood career and also a few years ago when he was at the height of his popularity. He has had several solo shows in major cities. And he has shared the stage with Kunal Ganjawala and Kher on different occasions.

"I realised long ago that even if I am the biggest attraction in a show, I should not monopolise it," Nigam says. "Whether I am performing with a well-known singer or a relatively less known artist, I follow certain principles. If we agreed on something right at the time a show was conceived, I will adhere to the agreements. If I have to sing eight songs, I will never try to sing nine, for that matter even eight and half, even if the audiences are clamoring for it.

"I would rather sing seven and half songs," he continues, "and let other artists have fun with their numbers. It is very easy in this business to be swayed by fan adulation and overlook that one's ego is bloating. Whenever I feel tempted, I remember what my parents had ingrained me from my childhood -- to share success with others, to be genuinely humble, and fear god."

When he was beginning his movie playback singing career, Nigam recollects with a gentle laugh, his mother had told him: 'You are not really cut for the movie industry.'

"I come from the Kayastha [a caste] community," he adds. "We are better known for our education and working in the administrative services. Given those factors, I am surprised from time to time what I have been able to achieve in the film industry in particular and the entertainment industry at large. "

Bharat Jotwani, who is hosting the Atlantic City show with entrepreneur and restaurateur Victor Khubani, says Nigam is a natural draw on the stage.

"His appeal is phenomenal," Jotwani adds. "He energizes the audiences in no time."

Jotwani, who has organised many star-driven shows in the last two decades, says only a few singers can draw an audience of more than 5,000 in the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut tristate area.

"We called the show Explosion 2009 because of the musical star power it has," he says. "Apart from Sonu who continues to be the most successful singer in the Hindi film industry, we have another big success, Sunidhi Chauhan.

"I look at her as an actress who can dance and sing," he continues. "She is good looking and she knows how to whip up the audiences emotions. She has had many major hits in the last two or three years in films like Omkara, and I am sure the audiences are expecting a lot from her."

As for Hard Kaur, he says, "the younger audiences will go crazy for her."

How is that a high profile show such Explosion 2009 has just one performance in the tristate area?

"When you look at how much we have spent on the show, and when you consider how popular these artists are, it is logical to think of a second venue, in New York or on Long Island," Jotwani confesses. "We wanted to have a second show. But there are too many things going on in Sonu's career, and given the fact how busy he is, we could not get the dates that matched the availability of prestigious venues. In summer, the large auditoriums go booked many months in advance."

Art of whistling and the world of Hindi Cinema

Among other great songs based on whistles that the Hindi cinema has produced in the recent memory is '' Kiska Hai ye Tumko Intezaar main hoo Na''From Main Hoon Na !!
Indeed whistling as an accompaniment in the Hindi cinema may be making intermittent appearances but whenever it has done, it has indeed recreated the image of gay-abandon and brought a smile on the frowning faces.

T-Series acquires the music rights of 3 Idiots

With each passing year music label T-Series is only growing from strength to strength. Take a look at this year (2009) and most of the big Bollywood films such as Chandni Chowk To China, Dev D, Billu, Delhi 6, 8 x 10 Tasveer, Luck, Jashnn and Kaminey have their audio released on T-Series.

Now T-Series has gone ahead and bagged the music rights of one of the most anticipated films of the year- 3 Idiots. The film, produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, stars heavyweights such as Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R.Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Boman Irani in lead roles.

Music of 3 Idiots has been composed by Shantanu Moitra, playback singing by the music maestro Sonu Niigaam while lyrics have been penned by Swanand Kirkire.

While one will have to wait and watch how the music of 3 Idiots fares when it hits the market, it can't be denied that this is indeed yet another major film whose music rights has been acquired by T-Series.

Sonu Niigaam Promises Shock Value at - Explosion 2009

Los Angeles, Calif. — Singer Sonu Niigaam, who is scheduled to give his “Explosion 2009” concert Aug. 2 with co-stars Hard Kaur and Sunidhi Chauhan at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, and Aug. 9 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, won’t even give the merest hint as to what he has in store for his fans that evening.

“We work on shock value, we work on surprise value,” was the most he would tell India-West during a July 14 interview at the India Oven restaurant here.

“I will do my popular bits,” was the most the singer would say, “but at the same time, I’ll be doing songs I’ve never done before, which will give the audience an extra edge, an extra reason, an extra memory to take home.”

The concert will be the first time Niigaam has appeared on stage with Chauhan, whom he credits as “one of the most dynamic performers and the most phenomenal singers of India who brought a lot of change into the female style of singing of so-called Bollywood.”

Niigaam indicated that with Chauhan sharing the venue, “the combination by itself gives you the incentive, gives you the urge to do something different. So it’s not only going to be unique for the audience but for me also.”

The concert will be his ninth that he has performed in the United States in the past 15 years, and although he admitted he has recently met with some American song producers, he confided that he is not “desperate” to make an American album.

Niigaam burst on the scene in 1991, when he came out with a collection of songs by the legendary Mohammad Rafi. He chose to emulate Rafi because “he was undoubtedly the most versatile singer at that time, and he was the reason why I wanted to become versatile, why I wanted to cross different genres,” he told India-West.

In 2008, years after he had established himself as a singer in his own right, Niigaam cemented his reputation when he recorded a concert of Rafi’s songs with the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Despite the international collaboration, Niigaam wasn’t sure at first if he wanted to tackle the project.

“I first reconsidered. I didn’t want to go through that rigmarole again, and I said I wasn’t going to do it,” he recounted.

What changed his mind was when he saw that making the recording was an opportunity to have Rafi’s music “heard by the generation of today, because a lot of people today hear me but they should also know who I was inspired by,” he said.

The process of recording was “a tougher task, because I was singing all his songs at a stretch, without a break, and I did not want to deviate from what he had done. I could not vary it, I did not want to vary it, because it was a tribute, not a comparison,” Niigaam explained.

“I didn’t want to outdo him. I just wanted to be him, paying homage to his soul and spirit. So it was a very emotional project for me, and I think it is one of the most beautiful things I’ve done in my life.”

Indian popular music is inextricably linked with Bollywood cinema, as Niigaam would be the first to admit. Yet the only non-Indian music that has become hugely popular among the younger set has been rap, which has launched the careers of many Indian performers, including his co-star Hard Kaur.

That raises the question: Why couldn’t Niigaam, given his influence and huge popularity, introduce Indian audiences to American country/western music, not the hardcore pickup truck-with-a-shotgun-rack variety but the more universally-themed music as being performed by such cross-over singers like, say, Lyle Lovett?

“Any kind of art form is a reflection of the society,” Niigaam responded to India-West after pondering the question. “The soul of country/western music is Texas. Whereas Indians have accepted Shania Twain, there has to be some element in country/western music that they can connect with.”

Rap, on the other hand, is popular, even in India, “because there is a huge marketing strategy for rap singers,” Niigaam pointed out.

“A lot of great singers are suffering because of rap. I’ve spoken to a lot of musicians over here, and they are not really happy with the music scene here in America, because the real ballads, the really great music does not get its due because of rap.”

Like hip-hop and R&B, rap has a relentless promotional machine behind it, “and whatever is being pushed, marketed and sold worldwide is going to reach India and is going to make more news,” Niigaam said. “If country/western music had that kind of promotion, it would have reached India by now.”

Niigaam’s “Explosion 2009” concert is being presented in Los Angeles by the Super Entertainment company in association with the Nawab of India restaurant in Santa Monica and Bawa Multani; and in Oakland in Northern California by Mehta Entertainment in association with Naeem Wahab of Cal Coast Financial Corp. (Readers may visit superentertainmentinc.com or MehtaEntertaiment.com for more details of the respective concerts in Los Angeles and Oakland

Rahman, Sonu and Lata India's favorites

NEW DELHI: Indian youth have given the definitive verdict. Double Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman is young India’s favorite music More Pictures
personality followed by singer Sonu Niigaam and the legendary Lata Mangeshkar.

A recent twelve-nation online survey released today has suggested that while a whopping 83% Indian youth love music, this year, there has been a 23% increase in the time they spent listening to music. Overall, the Asian youth increased their time spent listening to music by 25% over last year.

Titled Music Matters, the Asia-wide survey among 8,841 respondents has been conducted by market research firm Synovate. It goes on to add that American rock band Linkin Park, singer Rihanna and Canadian artiste Avril Lavigne are some of the popular music personalities in Asian countries, that are marked by a keen interest in local music and singers who dominate their favorites list.

While his general body of work has been admirable, it could well be Rahman’s work for Slumdog Millionaire that has catapulted him as a hot favorite. So, while Rahman and Sonu Niigaam are understandably favorites with Indian youth, thanks to their recent work that has appealed to Gen Y, it is Lata Mangeshkar’s name that comes across as a pleasant surprise. Renditions from the seventy-nine year-old veteran continue to strike the right chords with the country’s young listeners.

Says Bollywood music composer Shankar Mahadevan of the Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy trio; “Lataji has left an indelible mark on music. Her contribution to Indian music is unmatchable. It is therefore no surprise to me that she appears in the favorites’ list. The fact that the youth adore Lataji also proves that they have a keen ear for stellar music.” Notwithstanding the bombardment of techno, pop, rap music, Indian youth are discerning music listeners, still loving the gentle crooner and undisputed czarina of melody.

In what would be music to the ears of mobile phone manufacturers, the survey states that mobile phones are the clear favorites with Indian youth as the devices for listening to music, with 39% respondents preferring them to TV, computers and MP3 players. For the Asian region, computers followed by MP3 Players are the preferred devices for listening to music.

India’s music industry, which complains of constantly eroding revenues (to the tune of 50%) thanks to piracy will take heart from the finding that Indians are some of the most legal down loaders of music from the internet, with 19% paying for downloaded music, as against the 11% average of paid down loaders in the Asia.

But Vipul Pradhan, CEO, Phonographic Performance India, a music broadcasting license society, begs to differ; “The number of internet music downloaders is small in India, as compared to other Asian countries. Therefore the small number of ‘paid’ music down loaders is not of much significance.”

This Is It - Written By Sonu Niigaam July 2009

This is it
This is the end of a destiny
Bringin' an abrupt end to a Symphony
Who took him
Took him away without a warning
Leaving the millions here mourning

His music was as versatile as the life he lead
He danced, he sang, he cried, he pled
The earth the sky the Gods shook when he took on the dance floor
And his life was as lonely as a forlorn shore

CHORUS
So Folks I wanna tell you how much I love you
Cuz I see Michael now in every one of you
And I wanna give my all and do my best for you
For this is how I'm gonna give My Michael his due
His Due

Is that all
Is that all we'r gonna hear from him
Was he for real or a pseudonym
Time will pass
And the world shall find a new Icon
But History will always live on

I wish this wasn't it, though I know he's gone for sure
The one who wanted to heal the world, didn't have his own cure
I wish he didn't care two hoots for what people said
Wish he knew how much they loved him, I know he wouldn't be Dead

CHORUS
So Folks I wanna tell you how much I love you
Cuz I see Michael now in every one of you
And I wanna give my all and do my best for you
For this is how I'm gonna give My Michael his due
His Due

BRIDGE
Good bye Michael
Till we meet again
Thank you for the Legacy
Of music and dance for Generations to come

Sonu Niigaam lights a candle at MJ’s home

Singer Sonu Niigaam, who’s presently in the US, was amongst the many Michael Jackson fans who visited the legendary star’s home to pay their respects.

“He is the biggest entertainer the world has ever produced. It’s too early for him to leave the world. We just visited his house and lit a candle there in homage. Fans gathered to pay their respects. The lane is now cordoned off,” Sonu told PlanetRadiocity.com on SMS. Sonu concluded by saying: “History lives on…”

Sonu Niigaam To Sing A Life Saving Song 'Jilo Jeevan Ji Bharke"

RAJKOT: Pallav Pandya is a composer with a difference. His mission is to save people who want to commit suicide. He has composed a song "Jilo Jeevan
Ji Bharke" which has been uploaded on Youtube

It has been viewed by hundreds of people and won lots of appreciation from the non-government organizations. Falguni Pathak has promised to sing in Gujarati even as the Marathi and English versions of the song are on the verge of being released.
Pallav is also planning a Bangla version of his song. He has sent the song links to many NGOs and institutions which are working to prevent suicides. Maitreyi is one of them. Pudducherry registers the largest number of suicide cases. Kumar Mahi, who works for Maitreyi, the NGO based at Pudducherry, said the song can be used as a supportive tool.

Avesh Ramsunker of South Africa, Dweep from New Jersy and Charmy from Lokhandwala Complex Mumbai, listen to "Jilo Jeevan Ji Bharke" to cheer themselves up whenever they feel depressed.

The song works as an antidote to suicide and removes the feeling in one to commit suicide, claims Pallav, a resident of Rajkot, and a veteran musician for over 30 years. He is trained in classical music and learnt Jazz from American musician Deewood. An adept keyboard player, Pallav worked with Asha Bhosle for seven years and has now teamed up with playback singer Sonu Nigam. He has performed for many NGOs too.

"I counsel three persons daily. It is very sad to know that at least 250 people kill themselves daily. These people don't approach psychologist for different reasons. I am in my own way trying to save precious lives by cheering up people, who are depressed, and also counsel them," said Pandya, who has sung the Hindi version with Abhijeet Sawant. Sonu Nigam has made a promise to lend his voice too to the song.

A BSc in chemistry, Pallav studied Neuro Linguistic Programme of Joseph O'Connor and about motivational skills before getting down to compose his "Jilo Jeevan Ji Bharke".

What about the new blood in his own field - playback singing?

“I think Sonu Niigaam is very good, he is equipped with all the knowledge needed for a singer, is keen about doing good work and puts his heart into singing and understanding what he has to sing. Shreya Ghoshal is very good. But I will ask you something: In our wonderful country there is so much wonderful music. Every state is rich in music. Filmi Girl Talks to DJ Suketu

It’s not easy being a world-famous Bollywood DJ. Sure, you get to meet lots of pretty girls and have Zayed Khan launch your album but none of it comes easy. DJ Suketu, who performed here in Washington, DC last night as part of his 6 city US tour, had come directly from Dallas the night before and would be heading out to California before the night was over. He’s one classy gentleman to put the dancing needs of the public before his own need for sleep!

Aahana bids goodbye to city

Aahana bids goodbye to city
On Sunday night, singer Sonu Nigam, wife Madhurima and son Neevan spent an hour with Aahana at Jaslok Hospital. Poornima says the singer provided financial assistance to them, but Sonu could not be reached on his phone for a confirmation. Sources close to the singer said he did not want to comment as it was a 'very personal cause'.

Poornima has specially thanked Sonu, numerologist Sanjay Jumani, and the doctors who supported Aahana in her most difficult times. Like, Niyamat Jabbar, a garment trader from Vashi, who offered shelter to Poornima and Aahana at his apartment before they leave for Kolkata.

Aahana was discharged from Jaslok hospital yesterday. Dr Anita Udwadia Hegde, paediatric neurologist at Jaslok, said, "Aahana is a lot better. She has put on weight, interacts with people and even smiles sometimes. We have conducted gastrostomy, so that she can eat. A special wheelchair has been provided to Aahana."

"KAL HO NA HO"- THANKS SONU NIGAAM AND WADALI BROTHERS & GATEWAY OF INDIA VENUE.

Author:
Rudolph.A.Furtado
Posted:
January 27th, 2009
The "Times Of India" and Govt Of Maharashtra sponsored "Saptarang musical concerts" at Mumbai's eternal Gateway of India amidst the Taj Mahal hotel background was definitely a lifetime of memories, both sad and happy.
The "wadali brothers" qawali on saturday(25-1-09) preached "Communal harmony" while Sonu Niigaam on Sunday(26-1-09) made some of us Anglophile's, total fans of "International English rock and pop stars"realise that Hindi music also has "Rock stars", and not only "Play back singers".
The 26/11 broadcast of the terrorist attacks on telivision , the loss of innocent and patriotic lives and the fact that the monument of Indian hospitality and luxury, "the Taj Mahal Hotel" exists akin to the monument of love on which it was modeled proves that civilisation has triumphed over terrorism and hatred.
Sonu Niigaam rightly ended the evening and the sentimental gathering with his most memorable and very relevant song in a music industry churning songs by the dozens, "KAL HO NA HO"?
"Economic Apocalypse and Terrorism" has really made everyone rethink the "Kal Ho Na Ho" theme and try to live life to the fullest before its too late.

Transcript of LIVE Chat Singer, Sonu Niigaam

Hi Frnds, I juss found this chat session where Sonu ji were answering his fans' questions, so sharing here IN CASE you havent seen it yet.

When I came to Mumbai as a fresher, I didn't wear the tag of star-kid. Ironically, after 14 years of recognition, now I suddenly become a star son. Currently, my dad's second album is the highest selling solo-album in the country."

Sonu Niigaam
Singer

Nur_kksingapore > What is your favourite pastime besides singing?
Sonu Nigam > One is working out, sleeping and (doing) something that men love to do the most - I leave it up to your imagination!

Rehman > I Sonu, I am a small time musician too. Could you tell me what is this association for musicians that everyone is talking about? How does one become its member and what are it benefits?
Sonu Nigam > This association is primarily for all the singers who are working in India in any kind of medium whether films or pop music etc. This association is yet to be registered as I am finalising its clauses. Initially, the most important and prominent singers of India are its members. But once it's registered, anyone who complies with its clauses and terms and conditions (any professional singer) can become its member.

Nur_kksingapore > Do you really like acting and can I know if you sang in Suneel Dashan's new film, Dosti-Friends Forever ?
Sonu Nigam > I have loved and liked whatever I have done in my life whether its singing, anchoring on TV, dancing in my pop videos, composing music or acting. The name sounds familiar and I must have sung for it but since I do bulk work, it's difficult to remember all the songs.

Shilpi > I would also like to know how should a fresher start up his career in singing and how to get the celeb contacts because without recommendation it's very difficult.
Sonu Nigam > There is no formula to it specially when you are not a star kid. Just like I had to start from scratch - meeting people, asking for work, waiting for hours outside their offices, patiently tolerating their insolent behaviour at times and self motivating myself each one has to put his heart and soul in finding his destiny. The only suggestion I can make is - never waste your time criticising others. People who criticise others end up becoming either frustrated artists or frustrated journalists.

Shilpi > If you don't mind, I would like to tell you that you were exactly right when you gave a statement regarding the comment on your hairstyle.
Sonu Nigam > Thank you and keep motivating me. I am sure you are a positive fan.

Sita > Are you looking forward to acting in more movies?
Sonu Nigam > I take my life in segments. I invested one and half to two years in acting and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Then I went to America and produced an album (spirit and unfolding) and then came back to India and took up the Indian Idol (show). I thoroughly enjoyed the experience too. And now I am working on my solo album, which is due to release next month. I don't know what I am doing after that because I don't plan my future, I live in the present.

Lemik > Why do you think things didn't work for you as an actor?
Sonu Nigam > Firstly, my image as a singer is too strong in the hearts of people. Secondly, people look up to me in the sense that they expect me to not be a part of mediocre projects (which my movies turned out to be unfortunately. Not that I worked any less hard for it but as an actor you need to depend on a very strong project, great director, efficient and popular co-stars, through marketing and little bit of luck too. Besides, one's own acting prowess too counts.

That is why all Amitabh Bachchan or Shah Rukh Khan films are not super hits. Nevertheless, every experience teaches you something and in that sense the experience was a success.

Machi > Why did you try your hands at films? You are excellent as a singer. Why did you go into acting?
Sonu Nigam > Have you seen (any of) my movie?

Vania > Sonu what do you do to maintain your voice so well?
Sonu Nigam > I stay free from negativity and keep my soul clear from being cynicnal towards others. And that affects in the voice, I think.

Sita > How do you feel the aftermath of the Indian Idol show. Really, we were just hooked to it!
Sonu Nigam > Great! I am happy that the Indian audience has proved to the Indian media that singers are the most underrated and underutilised commodity in this country. And given the exposure like cricketers and actors, they can turn out to become huge money making machines for the industry.

Soni_84in > Don't you think Sonu that songs these days lack emotions compared to those in Kishore Kumar times?
Sonu Nigam > I don't think so. Music is a reflection of society in general and by looking down upon the present music we end up looking down upon ourselves. Music has been a very good, good, mediocre, very poor in every era. Sit with me someday and I will site you examples to prove my point.

Mannie > What made you start this association? Any bitter experience you had in your struggling days?
Sonu Nigam > Of course I have gone through a lot of hardships during my struggle period but my idea of promoting a singers' association was merely because such unsuccessful attempts have been made in the past and no one ever carried it forward to give it a concrete shape. Thank fully, all the singers today are hand-in-hand with each other and also with the music directors.

Jatin_smart > Sonu, how much time do you devote daily to music for practice? Your father is a also a very good singer, can we hear both voices in any song together?
Sonu Nigam > I am virtually singing always. And besides that my yoga-abhays and workouts give my lungs the power to belt it out. I think I must be the luckiest son who came to Bombay (Mumbai) without being a star kid and after 14 years of recognition I suddenly become a star son because my father Agam Kumar Nigam's second album "Bewafaee" is right now the highest selling solo album in the country. God willing, I will some day request him to sing with me. So you will get to hear father and son one by one.

Jatin_smart > What do you think about the talent hunts going on almost all channels? Do they really benefit newcomers?
Sonu Nigam > Yes definitely.

Amira > Hi, I am from Egypt and I like your voice very much. Have you thought of singing a song with Arabic words?
Sonu Nigam > It's a brilliant idea! Why don't you hook me up with some Egyptian crooners and then see the magic work!

Ani > Sonu, when can we again have Deewana or Bijuria kind of song from you? Seems you are too busy in film songs and don't have time for good private albums.
Sonu Nigam > I think I just answered this question before. I am on the verge of finishing the final mix of my solo album after four years and god willing, you will be able to see the promos on air by next month.

Sign of Message > Thank you very much for silently blessing me. Amidst all the choices of professionals a lot of you have chosen to pray for me and wish the best for me. And probably that's why an ordinary boy from Delhi, who could sing, has suddenly been chosen as one of the MTV youth icons this year in the list consisting of Shah Rukh Khan and Sonia Gandhi. This is one of the biggest high of my life and I will try my level best to keep on reinventing myself and entertaining you all to my best ability. Love, Sonu Niigaam.

Though it is an older one, still you will like it if you didnt see it in past.

Singers, composers gear up for first-ever film music awards

Singers, composers gear up for first-ever film music awards

24 Mar 2009, 0137 hrs IST, Bella Jaisinghani, TNN

MUMBAI: Curious half-lines of popular Bollywood songs emanated from Hotel J W Marriott on Monday afternoon. Every few minutes, a babel of voices
would rise and fall, debating whether a certain word in the song was vulgar or if a tune was good enough to qualify.

The cream of the crop of the film music industry was meeting to decide the nominations for the inaugural Tata Indicom Mirchi Music Awards (MMA) instituted by Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM. The awards ceremony will be held at a five-star hotel in Bandra on March 28.

The panel is a blend of the best writing and composing talent in the country, including Javed Akhtar, Suresh Wadkar, Sadhana Sargam, Shankar Mahadevan, Prasoon Joshi, Louis Banks, Kailash Kher, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sonu Niigaam, Lalit Pandit, Kunal Kohli, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and veteran film-maker Ramesh Sippy.

Chairman of the jury, Javed Akhtar, said it was surprising how a country of over a billion people, most of whom associate the memories of their youth with some film song or other, did not have an exclusive awards ceremony to honour its music professionals."

Suresh Wadkar categorically said popularity was only one of the factors that would determine the winners of the 17 categories. "A composition doesn't become great just because it plays on FM radio over and over again,'' said the singer. "The lyrics, music and the rendition matter in equal degree.'' Prashant Panday, CEO of ENIL said, "The artistes have already adopted our brainchild and assured they will help it grow in years to come. We hope the Mirchi Music Awards become as big as the Filmfare Awards,'' Panday said.

Have you ever recorded for a song only for it to be given to another singer later?
Yes, and I even felt that it was my best song ever. I had sung the track ‘Apne Des Ki Mitti’ for the movie Bose. But when the audio CD released, I found Sonu Niigaam’s voice on the track. I was shocked but I realised that Sonu could hit the high notes really well and probably that’s why he was asked to do it. One has to learn from these experiences and move on.

Akon contacted Sonu Niigaam

MUMBAI: Academy Award winning composer A R Rahman and American hip-hop singer Akon have joined forces to work together on a new album titled Freedom is Beautiful which also features artistes like Colby O'Donis and Kardinal Offishall.
Soon after the Oscars this year, music industry observers had predicted that Rahman's win would break the barrier between the east and the west. Looking at Rahman's popularity in Asia, it was Akon who decided to work with Rahman on this project which is a conglomeration of bhangra and hip-hop. The song's video featuring Rahman will be released on 23 March in India.
Meanwhile, Akon is also said to have contacted Sonu Niigaam, wellknown Bollywood playback singer who is touted as the "next Mohammed Rafi", for a similar project.
Akon rose to fame in India with the song 'Mr Lonely', an international chartbuster featured in his debut album Trouble and this magic was repeated in 'Smack that' (Konvicted). His 'Belly dancer' from his debut album 'Trouble' did well too, making Akon an international symbol of hip-hop music.

Exclusive Interview with Sonu Niigaam

Exclusive Interview With Sonu Niigaam
March 17 2009 20:30 PST

By: Anita Chatterjee

Sonu Niigaam is the man of the moment in the Hindi music industry today! Check out the exclusive interview with Sonu below.

AC: You have been in the Hindi Music industry since around 1991. I'm sure you have seen a lot of changes since then. How has it evolved?

Sonu: When I came to Mumbai from Delhi at age of 18 in 1991 there was no television channels or music companies to promote an album. So at that time, if you wanted to be in the industry, the best way to get into it was to pursue a career as a playback singer (singing for actors who would lip-sync the songs in Bollywood films). That was the aim of every singer.

The rest of the world was very different from how India worked back then. In other countries you could feature your own sound and get exposure through different music companies. You wouldn't have to depend on cinema. That's how India has been for more than 60 years. Now things have changed. Channels have given musicians more exposure. I hosted one of the biggest music reality shows in Asia, "Sa Re Gama," which really gave artists more exposure.

Now, you also see private as well as Bollywood albums in the market. I personally have done several private albums as well as Bollywood and Indie pop so things are changing. Also, a lot of avenues have opened up for singers such as songs for television, music videos, and an increase with music reality shows. In 1991 you had to be a really good singer to sing. Today, with all the technological advances it has become possible for people who cannot sing well to do it and that seems to happen a lot.

AC: Wouldn't you say that Bollywood films still dominate the music industry?

Sonu: Bollywood films still dominate but there is also a huge emphasis on events and television as well.

AC: Do you have any personal favorite Bollywood actors you like to sing for?

Sonu: I love to sing for Shahrukh and Salman but really I am a musician and I don't necessarily sing a song for the actor.

AC: What do you think of Bollywood movies embracing other genres of music like Hip-Hop and Rock?

Sonu: Well everyone is trying to embrace different kinds of music and they want to be more commercial. Indian film music has changed a lot in terms of style and arrangement. I think it is cool that genres like Hip-Hop are really showing up in the music now, just for some variety.

AC: What do you think about all the Collaborations like Snoop Dogg and RDB in Singh is Kinng?

Sonu: I am very happy that India is getting so much respect from other countries and collaborations are happening.

AC: Did you like the Pussycat Dolls "Jai Ho" Remix?

Sonu: I was one of the first to hear the Jai Ho remix. A.R. Rahman called me into the studio to listen to it and I loved it.

AC: Which artist from the west which you like to collaborate with?

Sonu: Well there are a lot of people I listen to and I think they are really good like John Legend, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, Norah Jones. Nicole from the Pussycat Dolls is a good singer as well. I would love to do a song with the Black Eyed Peas and a lot of other rappers. I would love to work with Timbaland and Justin Timberlake.

AC: I hear you are working with A.R. Rahman and Kylie Minogue on the film, "Blue", can you tell me about it?

Sonu: I can say is that Kylie, me and A.R. Rahman worked on a track for the film and I sang for Akshay Kumar.

AC: So what's next for Sonu Niigaam?

Sonu: I have lived my life in a daze and I don't know how my fifteen years in the industry have passed. For the past two years, I have cracked down on the projects I work on and I am extremely cautious of the projects I pick. I am really trying to focus on quality now and not quantity. I don't want to exhaust myself. I am currently working on '3 Idiots', 'Ravan' and 'Blue' and I am working on some collaboration offers from the US. I will also be working on something with Jim Beanz from Timbaland's camp in Mumbai.

AC: Do you have a message you want to give to our readers?

Sonu: Yes, always do good deeds, do not ever behave mediocre in life. Remember that music is something very pure and we must respect and acknowledge good music in the world. There are people in the world that are blessed with good talent and they should use it. Lastly, I think your site is doing a great job by creating these collaborations between artists in India with ones in the US. I wish Desi Hits! the best.

Jim Beanz and Sonu Niigaam finished tonight their recording of a track that will be called “Bombay Billionaire” And it’s absolutely smoking!!!!!

There was never any doubt. Nevertheless it’s very rewarding when an idea becomes reality, and the outcome is even better… Brian’s vision and network has united these two superstar talents to make what we all believe a mega hit!

Now only Amar is to lay down her last vocals, then Jim will finish the mix…

I can’t wait to hear the end version… However it may take a little time before it goes to the radio… But I guarantee, you will not be sitting still. It’s crazy!!!

Old Bollywood tracks are being remixed and used by many composers today, and people seem to be loving it. TOI reports on the trend.

Mohammed Rafi, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Kishore Kumar and others are hitting the charts once again. How is that happening? The reason is pretty simple. Old melodies and tracks are being incorporated in contemporary Bollywood films, the latest example being Khalnayak’s Choli ke peeche which was used by A R Rahman in the critically-acclaimed Slumdog Millionaire.

Mohd Rafi’s Aaj mausam bada beimaan hai from Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s Loafer was incorporated in Monsoon Wedding. When Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia came back together as a middle-aged couple in Pyaar Mein Twist, Kapoor tangoed on screen to his Khel Khel Mein chartbuster Khullam khulla pyar karenge complete with the introductory passage Kya tumne kabhi kisise pyar kiya? His Karz chartbuster Om Shanti Om was used as the prelude to Farah Khan’s film with the same title. Then, there is the classic Ek hasina thi, which was remixed by Himesh Reshammiya in the 2008 remake, Karzzzz. The mechanics may differ from film to film, but there is no doubt that the age-old tracks are here to stay.

It is the beauty and simplicity of these masterpieces that keep us going back to them. Singer Shaan asserts, “It is very difficult to beat the old songs. The works of R D Burman and Kishore Kumar are popular even today. However hard you try, barring a few cases like Don, the older version of a song always has a stronger impact on the audience.”
While remixes are the talk of the day, songs of yesteryear often sound best when played in their original form. Freelance journalist Easwar Bharadwaj believes, “The songs that are being used are already huge hits and audiences connect with them. I feel these songs should not be tampered with. But, I must admit, it is a good idea to let the new generation get a feel of the good old music their parents grooved to when they were young.”

Mona Das, a music executive, is of the opinion that these superhit old songs are always welcome in contemporary movies. “It is a good idea to introduce these songs as part of a peppy soundtrack to the new generation. This gives youngsters, who haven’t heard many songs, more exposure with regard to the kind of music that was made during the heydays of the film music industry. As long as the old music directors are not touchy about the whole issue, remixes are very entertaining.”

Listening to and singing the songs of their predecessors are a part and parcel of being a playback singer. Singer Sonu Niigaam adds, “I really do not have any viewpoint on this. To be very frank, this thought has never crossed my mind. But, as long as the soundtrack is good and the people are kept entertained, I don’t think there is any harm in using old songs or remixing them.”

Most of us love to listen to old songs with meaningful lyrics, melodious tunes and brilliant singing. In fact, there are quite a few music lovers who keep surfing till they find a channel airing only old classics. And, now that old melodies are entering the soundtracks of new flicks, such tracks will have countless new admirers. Not bad at all, since they deserve to be heard again and again and....
