Sonu Nigam - I Am A happier Person!

Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam has left no stone unturned. From charting out some epic hindi songs to collaborating with international heavyweights like Britney Spears, Jermaine Jackson and now Avicii. He lets us in on his upcoming album, Bollywood work and more. Excerpts:

How did the collaboration with Avicii come about?
I had heard of Avicii. But I had no clue that he was so popular. His team had approached me and then we ended up recording the song in May and shot the video in 10 days.

What’s in store for your fans?

I don’t have fans, I have fanatics. They’re like Sonuholics!! I’m doing very select work in Bollywood and I’m focusiing on my independent music. It’s been four years since my last album. So now, whatever I do is not just for the sake of work, I am aware that I am responsible to my myriad fans.

Another album in the pipeline?
Yes. This one is an English album. The first track is the track in collaboration with Avicii. The second one is a complete English track composed by Jud Friedman -— the international legend who composed the track Run to You by Whitney Houston. I will release the second single soon and the album by January.

You’re known for some timeless romantic numbers. Do you like that association/tag?
Most of the romantic songs I have sung have become a benchmark! But the only tag I want to wear is that of a versatile singer.

You’ve been around for so long now... How have things changed between then and now?
I’ve reached the point where I want to take control of work and life. I’ve seen the days when I used to record live with multiple artistes in the studio, and work without food/water. Now I don’t have to worry about what next. I give a lot of importance to myself now. Earlier it used to be only work. I was insecure. I wanted fame, money, security... Today I’m a happier person than what I was say 10 years ago. I keep myself stress-free.

That story would make for a good book... planning to pen one down?
I might one day, you know! Each time I have an interesting thought/line I take voicenotes or sms/email it to my sister.

Sonu Nigam Sings For Ranbir Kapoor!

Music composer Lalit Pandit believes that the music of the forthcoming Ranbir Kapoor starrer, Besharam will become a rage. Post the release of the first look of the film, people are looking forward to its music. Lalit, who has composed the music for Besharam says, “The film has lively and melodious music which will become very popular and people will enjoy them. The songs in the film are situation based and sound fantastic.”

The album consists of six tracks which includes two high voltage item numbers, some romantic and fun songs. The album features vocals by various well-known singers like
Sonu Nigam, Mamta Sharma, Shreya Ghoshal and Mika Singh. “I am also introducing a new singer Sujeet Shetty in the film,” adds Lalit.

All the songs have already been recorded, since director Abhinav Kashyap wanted the music to be completed in the pre-production stage itself, revealed the composer.

Very selective about the kind of music he wants to create, Lalit says, "For a song to become a chartbuster, it is necessary to have good music. The success of Munni badnaam hui is a perfect example of the important role that music plays."

Nigam and his 30-member troupe presented a brilliant potpourri of all-round stage performance during their over two-hour performance.

The event was organised by FP7/MCT in association with Muscat Unique Diamond Entertainment. The show was held under the auspices of the guest of honour J. S. Mukul, Indian ambassador to Oman. During the power-packed performance, Mukul presented the memento of appreciation to Sonu Nigam on behalf of FP7/MCT. Performing alongside the very talented playback singer Shruti Pathak, Sonu Nigam burst on to the stage with some of the most popular hits in his two-decade-long Bollywood singing career. Pathak began her singing career after singing for various remix albums.

With her song Mar Jawan from Fashion (2008) Pathak became popular. She earned nominations in both Filmfare and Screen Awards for the song. Starting sharp at 8pm the audience was kept in rapt attention from the beginning as Sonu Nigam started with soulful songs such as Shukran Allah Wallah Alham Dulillah he ratcheted the mood of the audience to a whipping frenzy.

The dancers too added their flair to the show as choreographer Savio Barnes along with his other dancers grooved to the numbers of Sonu Nigam. Barnes gained considerable reputation after choreographing many dances for Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, a dance competition aired on Indian national TV.

Obliging the popular demand, he sang a popular Kannada song, Anisuthide, the packed amphitheatre erupted when Sonu Nigam sang the song. With a brilliant supporting band, Nigam indeed left an indelible mark on the audience. With his unique ability to connect with the audience and his tender power ballad Kal Ho Na Ho, Sonu Nigam finally left the audience

rooting for more.
The talented singer was quoted saying, "I enjoyed every minute performing in front of the Muscat audience. I just love coming back here as the audience here really understands my music and enjoys my performance. I look forward to coming back yet again." The organisers triumphed with their expectation of 'House-full', 'Box-office' hit concert and ended up selling tickets at full price even at the day of the show. There were no reduced or discounted tickets being given away.

Sonu Nigam - Fans Love Is More Important Than Awards!

Sonu Nigam Wins Best Singer At Big Star Entertainment Awards!

Congrats to Sonu nigam for winning the Big Star Entertainment award
For Abhi Mujh Mein from AGNEEPATH!

Sonu Nigam Is One Of The Greatest Singers!

MUMBAI: Commencing her career with hit singles in bollywood films, Tulsi Kumar has walked down several paths before bagging a track in the much-awaited 'Dabangg 2'. Having made her mark in the devotional space and enlisting a few albums to her name, the singer has also bagged a host of projects under her family label T-Series.

Mostly venturing into the romantic genre, Kumar has rendered a love duet with Sonu Nigam in 'Dabangg 2' as well. Titled ‘Saanson Ne Bandhi Hai’, the Sajid-Wajid composition aims to take the audience back to the 90s with its melodic feel.

Speaking with Radioandmusic.com on the track, Kumar said, “It’s beautifully composed by Sajid-Wajid and picturised on Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha. I am sure people will like it. I enjoyed singing it and I think 'Dabangg 2' will be one of the duos biggest albums because all the tracks in the album are very nice.”

Inspite of being the daughter of film producer Gulshan Kumar and sister of Bhushan Kumar of T-Series, the vocalist maintains that she did not receive any favourtism and had to go through the grind like every other singer in the industry. While recent reports suggested that Salman Khan recommended Kumar for the project, the final call on the track was taken only after a test rendition from the singer pleased the director and composers.

Being around in the industry for six years, the singer stays rooted by stating that she will always be a learner in the industry which has no end to perfection. Making her debut in bollywood with Sonu Nigam for the film ‘Humko Deewana Kar Gaye’, the songstress is back with her idol, always learning something new about playback singing from him.

“I think Sonu Nigam is one of the greatest singers that we have in bollywood today. I really look up to him. I have been listening to him ever since I was very young. There are a lot of things that I am still learning from him. The way he renders a song, the kind of feel that he delivers is great and I am trying to learn that from him. All his renditions are worth listening to on repetition because his nuance in every track is something that we as singers can learn from him,” she claims.

Sonu Nigam Sings For Mynaa & Chandra

Sonu Nigam confesses that he will always have a soft spot for Kannada music Having recorded for Roopa Iyer-directed bilingual Chandra (starring Shriya Saran and Prem Kumar) just some days ago.

The singer has had many of his Kannada songs come out in 2012, and does at least
Four songs every month in this language. “Even yesterday, I sang for Chandra.

I have a lot of other songs coming out as well. I love singing Kannada songs
They have a certain melody, and the notes... The love Kannadigas feel for me is humbling,” he says.

Chandra Has Musc by Gautam Srivatsa!

Mynaa Has Music By Jassie Gift!

All the best Sonu G!

Sonu Nigam & Avicii Making History!

Sonu Nigam: I didn’t know who Avicii was

Sonu Nigam and Avicii’s debut collaboration, Indian levels has been generating a lot of interest lately — probably since it’s the only song produced from a partnership between an international DJ and a Bollywood playback singer. “The song’s been doing well. I’m happy that people are
discussing it and tweeting about it,” says Sonu, adding, “Working with Avicii was fantastic; he is a sweet and talented guy. But he doesn’t like to feature in his videos.” The single, which is out on Universal Music, features Sonu’s vocals on Avicii’s past hit Levels.

Sonu, who has delivered several Bollywood hits in the past decade and a half, however, admits that he wasn’t aware of Avicii’s fame in the EDM circuit when he was approached for this project. “I didn’t know who Avicii was. With so much happening around me, it is difficult to keep track of so many things. I was surprised to see his popularity among the younger generation,” he says.

He is also looking forward to the release of another single and its video in the next few days. “It’s nothing like what I’ve done before. The single will surely set a new benchmark,” says Sonu.

Meanwhile, Sonu is also composing music for two films — Jal and Sooper Se Ooper — which will release next year. “I am working on these projects as a composer with (tabla player) Bickram Ghosh and looking forward to the music release.”

Has he sung for the films? “No. I feel a composer should just be that and not hungry for songs. If Naushad and Shankar-Jaikishan sang their own compositions, then we wouldn’t have got singers like Lataji and others of their league. There are a lot of new voices that you will hear in this project,” he says.

Sonu Nigam & Avicii’s Debut Collaboration!

or long perhaps too long, he has been projected as the young, chocolate-boy face of playback singing in India. But, a much grittier Sonu Nigam is now all set to break stereotypes, not to mention the music charts, with his debut international album, the first single from which is already the talk of town.

The track- Z, for which he collaborated with electronica powerhouse Avicii, has catapulted him to a different league. But, despite all this, the artiste confesses that he will always have a soft spot for Kannada music, having recorded for Roopa Iyer-directed bilingual Chandra (starring Shriya Saran and Prem Kumar) just some days ago.

The singer has had many of his Kannada songs come out in 2012, and does at least four songs every month in this language. “Even yesterday, I sang for Chandra.

I have a lot of other songs coming out as well. I love singing Kannada songs...they have a certain melody, and the notes... The love Kannadigas feel for me is humbling,” he says.

Coming back to Indian Levels, Sonu admits that it is his first single that has come out in such a big way.

“I have collaborated with Britney Spears and Jeremy Jackson before, but this one was done more meticulously,” he explains.

The song itself came to be when Avicii’s management contacted Universal to collaborate with an Indian for his smash hit Levels. “I composed, wrote and recorded the song over that track. I then went to Los Angeles for the shoot,” he recounts. “There is a lot of buzz already. Recently, even Abhishek Bachchan tweeted that he was obsessed with the song,” he smiles.

Ask him about his album, and he divulges that it all began in 2009 when he had gone to America. “For a while, I was doing nothing — just enjoying the peace. I started meeting musicians there.

Then I came to India and performed at the ICICI World Cup; it was an English anthem. I was collectively drawn towards making something different,” he says. The music he was listening to at that time also changed something in him. “I have been known for my Bollywood tracks, but growing up, we used to listen to a lot of pop — Michael Bolton, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and the like,” he discloses, adding, “The album is almost done and the second single will come out next week.

It has been composed by Jud Friedman (who wrote the song I Want To Run To You from the movie The Bodyguard). It is a beautiful song will shock people who’ve been following my music!”

Singing apart, Sonu has now turned composer! “I am doing the music for three songs,” he pipes, “I always say that I am a musician first and then a singer. The films that I am doing music for are Jal, Sooper Se Ooper, starring Vir Das, and the third one is a secret.”

As far as his tryst with acting is concerned, Sonu insists that he has reached a point where he has to be extremely careful about what he chooses. “Movies keep coming, people keep approaching me, but until I am utterly convinced, nothing is going to happen,” he says.

For a man who is as busy as he is, it is understandable when Sonu says that when he is free, he likes nothing more than to catch up on his forty winks. “I also work out and take care of my health as much as my schedule permits.

I don’t like to socialise outside too much I have a couple of friends with whom I prefer to hang out, sit quietly, maybe with a drink, and no music at all, I like the sound of silence,” he concludes with gravitas.

Sonu Nigam - Live in Concert On Dec 13, 2012 At The Qurum City Amphitheatre

Muscat: Whether it is films songs, albums or concerts, Sonu Nigam never fails to leave his fans spellbound.

His vocal virtuosity and talent has given him the 'complete musician' tag. Whether it is the expressive Kal Ho Naa Ho, touching Sandse Aate Hai, quick paced Ye Hey Dil, heartwarming Jaane Nahin Denge, stirring Zindagi Maut Na Ban Jaye, high speed Tumse Milke Dil Ka Hai Jo Hal Kya Karein or the recent Abhi Mujhmein Kaheen, Sonu knows to capture the mood and essence of a song to the T. Indian film industry's biggest singer's captivating style always has the listener wanting more.

The talented artiste is all set to perform for the Sonu Nigam - Live in Concert to be held on December 13, 2012 at the Qurum City Amphitheatre. In the interview he talks about his life and the love for performing.

Oman needs no introduction as you have performed here more than once. What can the audience expect from you this year?

My motto has always been pure, raw and from-the-heart music and entertainment. It has been 20 years since I started doing my own shows. But it still feels new and inspiring. Audience can expect my honesty to my craft.

How does it feel coming back here for the third time to perform and what do you have to say to your fan following in Oman?

It feels great. I have a clear memory of the crowd in my experience the last two times I came here. I am looking forward to creating a night to remember with them again.

You travel extensively around the world for musical shows, reality shows, contests etc. How do you keep up with your schedule and manage your personal life amidst all of this?

I keep fit. I eat well. I practice music as much as I can. I stay happy. I stay connected with my family. Most importantly, I do not crib and complain in life.

You received rave reviews for your compositions for the movie Jal. Why did you not think of composing for films earlier? What are your future plans as a composer?

People have been talking about Jal even before its release. I am super elated. Bickram Ghosh and I are doing another film together called Sooper se Ooper. I want to do quality work with quality people. I am a musician first and a singer later, thus composing music comes naturally to me. I never went to anyone asking them to give me a movie to compose. These movies just happened due to the immaculate faith some friends have on me.

Please tell us briefly about your future assignments as a singer.

I usually have never kept a track of forthcoming songs ever in the past too. I sing, and I forget. Recently I remember singing for Dabangg 2, Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 and others. My song with Avicii called Indian Levels, is the talk of the times right now. I am glad that independent music is getting a response like that.

How different has the year 2012 been?

Actually every year has some milestones and I like to thank every year for that. Currently 2012 is so special as it gave me Agneepath's Abhi Mujhmein Kaheen, Teri Shirt Da Main Taan Button Soniye, Ajnabee from 1920 — The Evil Returns (this song was shot on me and now Indian Levels. Also my mightiest tour ever was conceived and achieved this year, Klose to My Heart. I had a huge Indian orchestra with me.

We were supposed to do 11 shows in USA and Canada. We ended up doing 23. I am doing something very big and similar in Dubai next year. Perhaps I will get this concept to Muscat one day. May be give a teaser this time? Hmm?

Having performed at various places around the world, which one of them has been your favourite and the most memorable?

I have performed right under the Pyramids of Egypt, under the Qutub Minar in Delhi and hosted SaReGaMa under the Taj Mahal. All these have been memorable, but a concert is not judged by the place, but by the space you create while performing.

You are not just a talented singer but also an accomplished actor and a great mimic. Are there any plans in the offing in this regard?

Well I wish I had the skill to distinguish a mediocre project from a good one when I acted in films. But I still cherish the experience. I love doing masti on award shows or my stage performance. And I know people love it because they know it is the actor in me. Plans? Well, I'd leave it on the Almighty.

Talking about talent, one of the examples is your contribution to the 18-song global compilation of tribute songs for Michael Jackson called The Beat of our Hearts and your collaboration with Britney Spears on the remix I wanna go. Please tell us about your experience of working on the international arena and with this mix of people?

My Facebook tribute song becoming a part of The Beat of our Hearts, was a huge surprise. My song with Jermaine Jackson is something I cherish so much considering the only tribute from a Michael Jackson's family member ever, is with me. (I just realised I should sing this song on stage).

Collaboration with Britney too happened just by chance. I am glad I sang with Kylie Minogue too in Blue. Now Avicii and Indian Levels. Keep counting!

You have won awards from almost all the top music award genres. Did you ever expect this to happen when you had initially started your career as a singer?

Awards meant big deal when I started. But it took me 10 years to start getting them. I now feel awards are like gifts. Enjoy it when you get it. But do not complain if you do not.

Sonu Nigam Live In Concert - Dubai 2013

Sonu Nigam Hosts Vaseline Zee Rishtey Awards 2012

Zee TV completed 20 years of entertaining India on October 2 this year, and this called for a grand celebration of all that the channel stands for at its annual awards show Vaseline Zee Rishtey Awards 2012. The much-awaited soiree raised a toast to 20 years of togetherness. The awards show had several exciting segments shot with the key actors of its shows, airing every weekend of November as a build-up to the grand telecast of the awards function tonight.

Talking about the performances, the channel's leading ladies - Ankita Lokhande, Kratika Sengar, Narayani Shastri and Vindhya Tiwari - performed a sensational aerial act. Rithvik Dhanjani, Gurmeet Choudhary and Nandish Sandhu were in superhero avatars and did some daredevil stunts and props. Gurmeet, who danced to Ishaqzaade, laced with fire stunts, ended up burning his knuckles in the middle of the act.
The event saw the coming together of actors - old and new - under one roof. While the new actors rocked the stage, the oldies reminisced old times. Actress Shoma Anand and Rakhi Vijan were seen remembering their Hum Paanch days. Director Anurag Basu, who has produced TV serials in the past, attended the event, too. The awards function was also graced by Dance India Dance judge Terence Lewis and popular TV couple - Parmeet Sethi and Archana Puran Singh.

Sonu returns as host
Singer Sonu Nigam shot to fame as the host of Zee TV's Sa Ra Ga Ma Pa in 1995. So, when he was approached to host the annual awards - Vaseline Zee Rishtey Awards 2012 - 17 years later, Sonu gave an instant nod. Says the singer, "I have had a long association with the channel. I would always be grateful to them for giving me the stage to showcase my skill. It was in 1994-95 that they invited me as one of the guest contestants on Antakshari. They liked my attitude and confidence so much that they offered me to host the show. But I was averse to the idea of hosting an established show. I told them that we must start something new and that's how Sa Re Ga Ma Pa happened."

Sonu went out of his way to ensure that the segments he was hosting at the awards ceremony are lively and entertaining. Not only did he get involved in the writing and improvising of his script as the anchor, but also composed and sang an original song that pays tribute to Zee's 20 years. He had the audience in splits as he learned a Bhojpuri item song from Bihari girl Ratan Rajput. It was only after the show was over that he revealed that his mother wasn't keeping well and that he had to miss the after-party to be with her.

Did you know
The title Sa Re Ga Ma was suggested by none other than Sonu Nigam. He also composed the tribute song for Zee TV.

His wife, Madhurima, designed his look as the host.
