Sonu Nigam & Artists Shukrana To MP's!

“We’ve just come to know that for the last half-an-hour [UPA Chairperson] Sonia Gandhiji is sitting somewhere at the back [of the Balyogi Auditorium in Parliament Library Building],” announced actress Shabana Azmi during a concert by top artists of the music industry here on Thursday. The artists have put up a grand show for MPs to thank them and the government for approving the Copyright (Amendment) Bill, 2012 that entitles them to lifelong royalty on every song played anywhere, even as a ring-tone in mobile phones.

“Thank you ma’am for your consideration to the artists,” said Ms. Azmi, prompting Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajeev Shukla, who was sitting in the second row from the stage, to go looking for the Congress president. She, however, remained seated in a corner seat and after a while left as unobtrusively as she entered.

Rashtriya Janata Dal president Lalu Prasad, however, was not as lucky. As he rose to leave in the middle of the show, Ms. Azmi, a former Rajya Sabha member, sounding somewhat like Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar in the House, said, Laluji bait Jayiye. Kahan jaa rahen hai aap. Baith jayiye (Laluji, sit down. Where are you going. Sit down.) Along with him, other MPs including Sitaram Yechury, N.K. Singh and Shivanand Tiwari also stayed put. They were all leaving for a dinner hosted by Vice-President Hamid Ansari.

Thanking the stars for their gesture, Ms. Meira Kumar said it was “unprecedented” that someone had expressed gratitude to the government and Parliament in such a “magical way.” In a lighter vein, she urged the government to pass such a Bill every year so that such magical evenings could be organised.

“In the passing of this Bill, the government has shown that it is sensitive to the needs of creative artists and respects them,” the Speaker said. “If poetry could be said in one word, it was Shukrana [thanksgiving],” she told writer Javed Akhtar, who was behind the show and had named it Shukrana.

Singers A.R. Rahman, Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shankar Mahadevan, Javed Ali, Mohit Chauhan, Mahalaxmi Ayer, Visual and Rocha Hardwar sang a mix of new and old songs to entertain the MPs, who enjoyed every moment of the concert. Veterans of classical music Hariprasad Chaurasia and Shiv Kumar Sharma opened the performance with a jugal bandi.

Poets Gulzar, Javed Akhtar, Prasoon Joshi and Sameer Anjan rendered heart-touching poetry on social issues written by bards like Sahir Ludhianvi, Anjan and Anand Bakshi to drive home the point that several talented artists had died with no money in their pockets.

Mr. Akhtar presented talented composer Kuldip Singh who scored music for songs like “tumko dekha to yeh khayal aya, zindigi dhoop tum ghana chaya” and a popular school prayer, but had largely remained un-recognised.

“All my complaints have vanished now that the parliamentarians have showered affection on me,” Mr. Singh said, amid thundering applause.

Among the first to arrive was Gursharan Kaur, wife of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. BJP leaders L.K. Advani, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley too arrived early and stayed till the end. Among those who made it were Ministers Kapil Sibal, Pawan Kumar Bansal, Ashwini Kumar, Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha P.J. Kurien and Ram Vilas Paswan.

Sonu Nigam To Perform For Parliament!

When the Copyright Act (Amendement) Bill, 2012 was passed in the Lok Sabha on May 22 this year, the impassioned industry hailed Javed Akhtar’s efforts of over two years for the historic change. Now, the screenwriter-lyricist, as an expression of gratitude on behalf of the industry towards the Government of India for implementing the amendment, has organised a grand concert at Parliament.

Scheduled to take place on the evening of August 23 at the Balayogi auditorium, Parliament Library Building, the concert, titled Shukrana, will bring together on stage noted musicians from across the country for a two-and-a-half hour event. Members of both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha are likely to be in attendance, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chief Sonia Gandhi and President Pranab Mukherjee. A notice on the Parliament Bulletin invites all members for the evening’s programme.

The programme has been designed by Akhtar and Gulzar and will be anchored by prominent actor and Rajya Sabha MP Shabana Azmi. The event will be recorded, however, as of now, there are no plans to televise it.

Bollywood music artistes such as Sonu Nigam, A R Rahman, Vishal Bhardwaj, Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendonsa, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Sunidhi Chauhan and Rekha Bhardwaj among others will be lending their voice to a number of patriotic and old film classics.

Veteran lyricists Gulzar and Sameer and Prasoon Joshi will read out poetry.

The idea, says Chauhan, is to pay a tribute to both the nation and veteran musicians. The list of performers extends beyond the film industry to include classical musicians, santoor player Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma and flutist Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia. Ghazal singer Kuldip Singh will also perform.

Sonu Nigam & Shreya Ghoshal Ft: Oh My Love - Raaz 3

The Raaz franchise re-emerges with its third film, Raaz 3 this year. Great music has been synonymous with the last two movies and with names like Emraan Hashmi and Mahesh Bhatt associated with it, expectations are certainly running high. Raaz featured music by Nadeem-Shravan while Raaz – The Mystery Continues featured music by Raju Singh and Toshi-Sharib, the second being very contemporary and the first relatively traditional. Both, immensely popular.

The new-ish Jeet Ganguly (Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi) has composed the songs with a guest composition by Rashid Khan. Lyrics have been penned by Kumaar, Rashid Ali and Sanjay Masoom while vocal talents consist of Javed Ali (‘Guzaarish’ – Ghajini), Shafqat Ali (Tum Mile – Title Track), K.K (Desi Boyz – Title Track), Sonu Nigam (Jabse Mere Dil Ko Uff – Teri Meri Kahani) and Shreya Ghosal (Chikni Chameli – Agneepath). The album has 6 tracks and is devoid of any remixes or reprises.

Raaz 3 hits cinemas 7 September 2012.

It is lacklustre and entirely mediocre for a Sonu Nigam and Sherya Ghosal track. O Soniye from Raaz – The Mystery Continues immediately comes to mind, a soulful romantic number with a timeless quality that also featured Sonu and Shreya

Sonu Nigam Sings For Raaz 3

Raaz 3 is an upcoming Bollywood erotic horror thriller film directed by Vikram Bhatt, and produced by Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt.[2] The film is a sequel to Raaz – The Mystery Continues (2009), which itself was a sequel to Raaz (2002), and features Emraan Hashmi reprising his role from the second film, and with a new addition to the cast, Esha Gupta. Bipasha Basu, who was a part of the first film of the Raaz series, has made a comeback to the series after opting out of the second film. Currently in the post-production stages, the film is expected to release on September 7, 2012. Although, the film was originally planned to release on 31 August 2012 alongside Barfi! and Joker, it was later delayed to avoid clashing with any other big film.

Sonu Nigam Ft In - Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum

The soundtrack of Ekta Kapoor’s latest film has been scored by numerous music directors, who have composed a peppy and fun album

In 2005, Kyaa Kool Hai Hum wrote a new chapter in the genre of comedy films and its much awaited sequel promises to tickle our funny bone once again. One gets a feel of it through the soundtrack of Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum – a peppy and funny album, totally in sync with the essence of the movie.

Next up is Shirt da button. It is an unusual title for a romantic song. The lyrics are a bit comical, but Sonu Nigam‘s voice carries the track on its shoulder and delivers it with perfection. Sonu has sung it so beautifully that the song touches you instantly. The use of handclaps to give it a qawwali feel in between also works well for the composition. It also has a second version, albeit in a slower avatar.

The final verdict – the music of Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum has some highs and lows, but deserves a hear as it manages to lift your ‘kool’ quotient.

Film: Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum; Music Director: Sachin-Jigar, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Meet Bros Anjjan; Lyricist: Mayur Puri, Kumaar; Singers: Sonu Nigam, Vishal Dadlani Sukhwinder Singh, Daler Mehndi, Riteish Deshmukh, Neeraj Shridhar, Kailash Kher, Swaroop, Meet Bros Anjjan. Rating: ***

Sonu Nigam Sings For No Entry Remake!

The first look of the Marathi version of the Hindi super-hit, “No Entry – Pudhe Dhoka Aahey” (There’s Danger Ahead), was unveiled July 25 at the Hotel Sun’N’Sand.

It is produced by Premnath Rajgpopalan and Nikhil Saini, and directed by Ankush Chaudhari, who also plays the counterpart of Salman Khan in the film. The film is almost a frame-by-frame remake of the Hindi film, which was itself a remake of a South Indian film.

The screenplay therefore is still credited as “Original Screenplay: Anees Bazmee.” Incidentally, including the Hindi, this is the sixth version of this comedy on marital infidelity.

The event at the poolside saw guests welcomed with roses by ‘Navvari’ (nine-yards) sari-clad girls and young boys with drums dancing to the beats of “lezim,” the Marathi folk form. Chaudhari also played MC and introduced the team – Bharat Jadhav who plays Anil Kapoor, Saie Tamhankar (who arrived pretty late) who plays the seductress Bipasha Basu, Kranti Redkar who plays Lara Dutta’s part, Aniket Vishwasrao, who play Fardeen Khan’s character, Sai Lokur, who essays Esha Deol and Manava Naik in Celina’s part.

Anant Jog plays Boman Irani’s counterpart while Viju Khote in cast in Anjjan Srivastava’s role. Paddy (Pandharinath Kamble) plays Paresh Ganatra’s part.

Music directors Nakash-Sargam have set tunes to lyrics by Guru Thakur. Nakash presented the ‘mukhda’ of the title-song on stage – the song has Anu Malik and Sunidhi Chauhan as singers – Anu had composed music for the Hindi film and Nakash imitated his voice to perfection in the original Marathi song that marks the debut of both Anu and Sunidhi in Marathi films as singers – both had also sung in “No Entry.”

Two more firsts in the film are the voices of Sonu Nigam and Wajid of Sajid-Wajid as playback singers. Arvind Soni is DOP and action by Pappu Verma.

Producer Boney Kapoor was expected but did not make it, but Anu Malik and Anees Bazmee did grace the occasion, mingling around for a long while. Siddharth Jadhav was also among the guests.

The film has been shot extensively in Goa, also the venue of the Hindi original, and now a prime location for most comedies, among other films.

Sonu Nigam Live In Calgary Sept 2nd 2012

Sonu Nigam Turns 39

Sonu Nigam (born July 30, 1973) celebrates his 39th birthday today. His fans are rejoicing as not only is it a day of celebration for him, but because one more special day has passed without their idol making the dreaded announcement. It was on the eve of his 33rd birthday that Sonu shocked everyone by claiming that he was going to slowly retire from playback singing. He would be cutting down on his songs gradually, he insisted, till one day he would stop singing altogether. He said that his aim when he entered the industry had been to make a name for himself as a playback singer. Since he’s achieved that, he’ll begin his retirement process. In the six years since then, Sonu has slowly done exactly that. While he has sung plenty of Kannada songs, his Bollywood songs have diminished in number. Though if you look at it quality wise, they are as good – if not better – than those he had sung earlier, in our opinion. Almost all of them are hits too – All izz well (3 Idiots), In lamhon ke daaman mein (Jodhaa Akbar), Soniyo (Raaz: The Mystery Continues), Chori kiya re jiya (Dabangg), Tere bin (Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji) and Allah maaf kare (Desi Boyz) being a few. Oh, and how can we forget Phir milenge chalte chalte (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi), where he channelised Kishore Kumar and Mohd Rafi! Over the years, he has not lost his magic – he proved that with his rendition of Abhi mujh mein kahin in Agneepath and Dil ko uff in Teri Meri Kahaani. He can definitely still leave us speechless.

Of course, there are songs like Yeh Joker in Shirish Kunder’s Joker and Maara re in Ferrari Ki Sawaariwhich make us groan, ‘Why Sonu, why!’ But that doesn’t stop us from eagerly waiting for his next. We wish him a very happy birthday!
