Sonu Nigam Collaborate's Against Piracy!

Citing a drastic increase in piracy, six leading singers have come together for a song that they hope will encourage Indians to buy original music instead of illegally downloading it. Composed and conceived by Shamir Tandon, the track is titled ‘Salaami ho jaye…’. It features
Sonu Nigam, Shankar Mahadevan, Kailash Kher, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shaan and Mohit Chauhan, who have collaborated for a song for the first time. Shamir explains his concept, saying, “We don’t go to a store and rob TV sets or T-shirts. Nor do we leave restaurants without paying for our food. But we steal music and don’t respect that someone needs to be paid for it. This song doesn’t teach or preach. It just creates awareness that one must pay their dues to the artistic fraternity.” The composer adds that his tune, penned by Niket Pande, is a tribute to not only musicians, but to the entire creative fraternity.

Sunidhi, the only female vocalist on the track, chimes in, “It’s a very sensitive issue for all musicians, so obviously I didn’t hesitate even once when Shamir called me. I hope we can put forth the message in a very polite way.” The singer adds, “Most people are innocent and don’t know the difference an original makes. This is a subtle way to let them know that a lot of hard work is put in a project. So, it needs appreciation.”

The song, produced by Universal Music, will be released by the end of the month.

Sonu Nigam Tributes Jagjit Singh At Gima – Yaadon ka Safar

The tribute concert was organized by the Global Indian Music Academy (GIMA) in partnership with COLORS and Wizcraft International Entertainment.

The biggest names in the Indian music and film fraternity came together today to commemorate the extraordinary musical legacy of the Jagjit Singh on his 71st birth anniversary. The tribute concert was organized by the Global Indian Music Academy (GIMA) in partnership with COLORS and Wizcraft International Entertainment. Held at InterContinental - The Lalit, the musical evening titled “Jagjit Singh – Yaadon ka Safar” saw the maestro’s family, friends, colleagues and well wishers walk down memory lane as they paid homage to his music, style and grace.

Jagjit Singh’s wife Chitra Singh attended the tribute concert along with her family. His grandson, Armaan and Chitraji launched an album of a collection of 12 unreleased songs titled “Jagjit Singh – The Master and His Magic” before the intimate gathering.

An artist of many dimensions - singer, writer, composer, music director, activist and a philanthropist, Jagjit Singh stirred the souls of millions of fans across the nation solidifying him a place in the history of Indian music. Known as one of the greatest voices of the 20th century, he gave the world nearly 46 years of musical performances. The evening saw over 20 artistes pay tribute to the legend rendering his greatest hits, having sung his soulful music and stirring lyrics. His long time friend Ghulam Ali made a beautiful tribute as he performed on Chupke Chupke among others; he also spoke about their friendship and journey together as artists.

Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi shared heartfelt and fond memories of the ‘Ghazal King’. Audiences embarked on a fascinating and moving journey through the life of this incomparable artist, his music and cultural history.

Social Activist and Padma Bushan awardee, Shabana Azmi, in a very soulful and sombre mood, said “It’s very strange the way in which Jagjit Singh left us. Three days before he was hospitalized, he was having a long chat with Javedji and they were planning a world tour together. And here we are today.” She added, “I’m very fortunate that three of his most famous and popular songs were picturized on me in Mahesh Bhatt’s Arth. The manner in which he so beautifully strung the lyrics with the pain that he was trying to convey left me with very little to do.”

The evening was hosted by Dia Mirza and saw a great line up of performances like Ustad Rashid Khan who sang Yaad Piya Ki Aaye. Kavita Krishnamurthy & Dr. L Subramaniam performed a beautiful duet on Meri Tasveer Mein Rang Aur Kisi Ka Toh Nahin. Sonu Nigaam captivated the audiences with some of his famous hits like Hey Ram and Hoshwalon Ko Khabar. Shaan sang Koi Ye Kaise Bata De Ki Wo Tanha Kyun Hai and Jhuki Jhuki Si Nazar. Other performers were Anup Jalota, Bhupinder & Mitali Singh, Talat Aziz, Suresh Wadkar, Hariharan, Shafqat Amanat Ali, Kunal Ganjawala, Richa Sharma, Hans Raj Hans, Ghansham Vaswani and Papon who were inspired by his music and notably helped form their careers.

He has been an inspiration to millions around the world and will continue to be one for years to come. We are blessed beyond words to have the biggest names in Indian music be able to revisit some of his most popular songs.”

Sonu Nigam Is Shankar Mahadevan's Ideal Singer

You yourself are an excellent singer, of course, but apart from you, who are the male and female singers you like for singing your compositions?

There are many good singers, and we have worked with most of them. Sukhwinder Singh. Shaan too is a very good playback voice. I am also particularly fond of Sonu Nigam – he has sung some of our best compositions. He emotes the songs beautifully.

You get Sonu’s best work because you inspire the singer in him to sort of restrain the actor in him so he emotes your compositions in a controlled sort of way… is that a correct assessment?

Actually, I would put it this way: Sonu is an excellent singer and actor too, and he also has impeccable musical sense and instinct. He’s also a very good improviser because he is so natural. So all that, in my view, adds up to a phenomenal musicality that he has. That’s what helps Sonu immediately assimilate our brief about a song and its personality, and render it so flawlessly, so beautifully! And if we have multiple takes, more often than not, there’s an argument amongst ourselves on which take to keep — they’re all so good.
