Sonu Niigaam Launches Mumbai Anthem - Big FM

Sonu Niigaam's Mumbai Anthem - The Making

Sonu Niigaam Press Conference - 11/26 Mumbai Anthem

Sonu Niigaam Unveils Mumbai’s 26/11 Anthem

Mumbai : In remembering and commemorating the undying spirit of its police personnel and Mumbaikars, who lost their lives to terrorism on the fateful day of 26/11 last year, music legend Sonu Niigaam creates Mumbai city’s very own anthem. The song composed by Sonu Niigaam and written by Subbu – National Creative Director of Linterland, has none other than actor Amitabh Bachchan opening the song with his voice and joined by leading singers of India including Jagjit Singh, Talat Aziz, Suresh Wadkar, Shankar Mahadevan, Sunidhi Chauhan, Alka Yagnik, Shaan, Kunal Ganjawala, Kailash Kher, Roop Kumar Rathod, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Richa Shama and Hariharan. The song launched exclusively on BIG 92.7 FM on the eve of 26/11.

The anthem is part of Mumbai Police’s campaign called Abhedya Mumbai, conceptualized and created by Linterland, which is a consolidated effort to spread the message of solidarity and security amongst Mumbaikars with the endeavor to channelize youth power towards unity and integrity. The next phase includes a large scale on ground musical concert by leading artists of India, managed by BIG Events for the Mumbai Police.

Speaking about his association with the initative, Subbu – National Creative Director of Linterland said, “This song means a lot to me first as a Mumbaikar and then as the lyricist. Working with Sonu was an awesome experience and great singers like Jagjitji, Talatji, Shaan, Roopji, Kunal,Shankar, sunnadhi, Kalish Kher all made it so special. Mr. Bachchan opening the song was a dream! I am glad we all got together to create Mumbai's first anthem. I hope people like our effort.”

Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner of Mumbai Police, D Sivanandan said, “I am happy on behalf of Mumbai Police to be part of this album created for the Mumbai Police and the city of Mumbai, by Mumbaikars. I sincerely thank Sonu Niigaam, Lyricist Subbu, and all the other artists who came together to create this masterpiece. I personally thank Mr. Amitabh Bachchan for being kind enough to participate.”

Speaking on the occasion, Nirupam Sonu, Sr. Vice President – BIG 92.7 FM said, “At BIG 92.7 FM we stand together with the city, saluting the spirit and dedication of the Mumbai police and the people who have lost their lives to terrorism. We believe music works as a healer and what more appropriate a way than to be the medium to give the city its first experience with the anthem! We are privileged to have our brand ambassador Sonu Niigaam launch Mumbai’s anthem on our Station.”

Sonu Niigaam & Shreya Are Your Main Singers

Sonu Niigaam and Shreya Ghoshal are your main singers
Have you followed the classic one-singer-for- an-actor formula?

Rajkumar: Not really.
Shantanu: But since you mentioned them, let me tell you that one quirk we three have that drives Sonuji and Shreyaji up the wall - we keep changing things in a song all the time, even recalling singers after recordings. For Pal pal in Parineeta we ended up calling them four times into the studios, and Sonu joked and asked if something was wrong because we had only recalled them once here after the first recording. But with Zooby dooby, the figure finally did reach four!!

"Where Were You" - The Street Extempore-JOIN IN
What are you doing on the anniversary of that gory night? It still generates a chill down my spine when I think of that ominous night. It saddens me to learn that many of us have lived up to the amnesic nature of Mumbai. And it is upon us, few awakened souls, to create an interesting movement for people to participate.

What Is The Tentative Plan??
Along with a few friends of mine, I would be at different terror spots on 26/11. We will do something very simple. Form a circle of 3-4 people, one of the participants would come in the center and speak about what s/he was doing on 26/29 November 2008. Once s/he finishes, s/he points to a random person in the circle and asks "Where Were You?". Now this person, (who could be amongst us or a bystander who teams up) would come to the center circle and speak about her/is experience on 26-29/11.

Would you like to join in too??? We are waiting. Call Harish Iyer on 9833100340 or email him on people.n.nature@gmail.com

Sonu Niigaam Sings On Education

Do what's right
“How inclusive is our education system?” was the topic of the panel discussion organised by CRY as a part of their on-ground events in the city

Child Rights and You (CRY) recently organised a series of on-ground events to motivate the public to participate in asking the government to make amends in the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009, by signing a charter.

The events included a mime, theatre and puppetry performance by a network of theatre groups called Theatre Forum for Child Rights, which highlighted issues surrounding the right to education.
There was also a photography contest-cum-exhibition organised by Jadavpur University Photographic Club and CRY which was an appeal to the public to get themselves involved in highlighting the status of children in the backdrop of education system in India with the theme “Is education really for all?” Dancer Alokananda Ray graced the occasion with her presence

“How inclusive is our education system?” was the topic of the panel discussion organised by CRY as a part of their on-ground events in the city on November 21 at Rotary Sadan. The panelists comprised professors Amiya Bagchi, Prasanta Ray, Mrinmoy Bhattacharya, Dr Ruma Chatterjee and Satarupa Sanyal.

The panel discussion began with a screening of Mera Bhi to Adhikar Haye, a video song with lyrics by Javed Akhtar, music by Aadesh Shrivastava and playback by Sonu Niigaam, Shreya Ghosal, Shaan, Udit Narayan along with many others. The video, which also had chorus by children, voiced their rights to education, right to live free and the right to a child labour-free nation

In his welcome address Dipankar Mazumder, director of CRY questioned, “Why should the children pay for something which is free? They do not voice their opinion and hence remain blatantly ignored. We at CRY are addressing their issues and bringing out their voices in the form of this charter which shall be given to the President of India in the form of a symbolic book.”

Chief guest of the discussion Dr Mahendra Pal Singh, vice-chancellor, West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences in his keynote address discussed about having faced a similar situation of less schools and insufficient teachers in his childhood. He stressed on the equal right to education for all and not just the handpicked few. He said, “There is a greater need to implement directive principles because only then will the fundamental rights gain a foreground.”
There was a screening of an audiovisual clip by volunteers of CRY which spoke about a child rights to education, to aspiration and his right to carve his own niche.

The panelists in the discussion mainly addressed issues of inadequate action taken by the government to aid in education. Issues of improper schools, unqualified teachers and unnecessary high incentive schools were also highlighted. The concept of neighborhood schools gained a high ground terming the Education Act 2009 as inadequate in terms to secure a child’s education rights. The fact that such a less percentage of the GDP of the nation was dedicated to children’s education was also highly accentuated.

Sonu Niigaam Planning To Bring Larry King To India

It would seem so given the rumour that Sonu Niigaam is said to be currently scouting for an apartment in New York. The singer, however, doesn’t confirm this. Yes, he admits that he’s spent almost six months this year between New York and Los Angeles working on various music concerts and shows. And, on a recent visit, he was even invited to the home of America’s sought-after talk show host — Larry King.

Asked how he managed this coup, Sonu Niigaam says, “I got to know Larry through his wife Shawn King, who is a brilliant country music singer. Music producer Damon Elliot introduced me to Shawn. And she invited me over to her home where I had my own personal audience with the revered Larry King.” Excited by that meeting, Sonu Niigaam is planning to bring Larry down to India now and reveals, “He definitely wants to come... but we have to see how we can steal him away from his daily television commitment.”

Sonu found Larry charismatic and with a crazy sense of humour. After spending hours in the television anchor’s home, the Bollywood singer says, “I was fascinated by the work that the Larry King Cardiac Foundation is doing. It was started by Larry after he suffered from a heart attack. The Kings raise funds to cover millions of Americans who don’t have medical insurance to pay heart treatment. I’m invited to attend one of the foundation’s functions.”

Sonu Niigaam roped in for Larry King's charity

Mumbai: Legendary American talk show host Larry King has teamed up with songster Sonu Niigaam for his Larry King Cardiac Foundation that provides free check-ups, medical help and surgeries to underprivileged Americans suffering from heart problems.

Sonu Niigaam, who is friends with Larry's current spouse Shawn Southwick (having interacted with her many times during his overseas music projects), says it was she who introduced him to Larry."I've know Shawn for a long time now and she made me meet Larry. He is very committed to the cause, having suffered a heart attack himself (it was a heart attack that Larry started the foundation). He thought having me on board would help his foundation and I'm honoured he thought so," Sonu Niigaam told DNA.

Sonu Niigaam adds,"I strongly felt I should do something for people even in America. I believe in Oneness, and for me, Indians and Americans are the same. If I can do philanthropic work in India, why can't I do it in America? I had a great dinner meeting with Larry. He has a different sense of humour and is very curious about our country."

Sonu Niigaam's Magic Still Works

In the swarming crowd of modern-day singers, soulful voice of the all time versatile singer Sonu Niigaam is still heard. His soothing voice has adorned the beautiful romantic number in the film Marega Salaa

Apart from keeping the audience on the edge of their seat this murder mystery is full of melody. Daboo Malik has composed the music of the film and ever since its release he has been ga-ga about it. Apparently, Daboo's favorite number ‘Ankhiyaan Tumhaari’ is in Sonu Niigaam’s voice.

Daboo imparts, “Everyone wanted some young singer to sing this particular song and initially I was also of the same opinion, but when I was deciding the voice for the song, trust me, only Sonu’s voice struck my mind. In spite of lot of argument with the team I did not budge and adamantly I roped in Sonu to sing the song. And guess what, as soon as the recording got over everyone was spellbound by the magic of his voice. I would say Sonu is the soul of this song.”

Sonu Niigaam, Undoubtedly Bollywood's Best Singer !!

In his 'Ballad Of The East And West', Rudyard Kipling wrote- "Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet, Till earth and sky stand presently at God's great judgment seat." However, it did happen rather recently and the impossible was achieved, not once but twice, interestingly in the Hindi film industry, and by the same team! Yes, the culmination of intellectually satisfying cinema and mass entertainment was achieved two times in the iconic films - MUNNABHAI MBBS and LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI. With two unifying factors; humanity and non violence (Ahimsa), Sanju's 'Jaadoo ki jhappi ' and 'Gandhigiri' bonded Indians, cutting across all divisive forces. And the same team, consisting of producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, director Rajkumar Hirani, composer Shantanu Moitra and lyricist Swanand Kirkere , the team who gave us cult movies like MUNNABHAI MBBS (music by Anu Malik) and LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI, and are back to bring us an all out entertainer, aimed mainly at the youth and in particular the campus crowd. And naturally when the lead actor is Mr. Perfectionist, Aamir Khan, things simply reach dizzying heights, as he is always associated with good quality films with chartbusting music. The music of both MUNNABHAI MBBS and LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI became quite popular, although the super success of the films played an important part in making the compositions popular with the audience.

In case of MUNNABHAI MBBS, it was an 'in form' Anu Malik, whose compositions fitted beautifully into the narrative. However, the audio of LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI by Shantanu Moitra did not get the same patronage and popularity as that of the first part. In fact there were a lot of 'inspirations' in two tracks "Pal Pal" ("Theme For A Dream"- Cliff Richards) and "Aane Chaar Aane" ("Chala Jaata Hoon" - SHABASH DADDY, "Sare Ke Sare"- PARICHAY), and the best number, "Bande Mein Tha Dum" was merely a tribute to the legendary patriotic song, "Aao Bachchon". So, without wasting any more time let us check out the music and see if the Moitra-Kirkere team can come up trumps in terms of the audio album this time around and give us beautiful original scores like in PARINEETA!

3 Idiots -The Movie songs
The album opens with "All Izz Well", a song that has the capability of becoming a college anthem due to a lot of reasons - a) The first and most important one being it's totally 'bindaas', chilled out rhythm that rocks to the core. b) Secondly the most interesting part, the lyrics by the multi faceted Swanand Kirkere which just like the rhythm is something that the youth will simply freak out on as its full on humour and evokes laughter. Must add here that they are very apt and identifiable and at the same time they give that feeling of inspiration and hope without being preachy, a difficult task indeed, but achieved to perfection by Swanand , 'Confusion hi confusion hai, Solution kuch pata nahin, Solution jo mile toh saala question ka ab pata nahin.' c) Next is the excellent rendition by Sonu Nigam, undoubtedly the best singer that Bollywood has to offer and giving him solid support is Shaan and the lyricist Swanand himself, as they put in all emotions to chart out a number that will sooner or later become the favourite of the youth and the children as well. d) Last but not the least, the light music arrangement in the background where the fusion of Hindustani and Thus we have an all out entertainer, which as we have predicted will surely become a campus anthem, such will be its popularity, especially since its picturized in a zany manner on Aamir Khan, Madhavan and Sharman Joshi.

The song also appears as a remix version "All Izz Well Remix " by Dj A-Myth/Darshan and it's a nicely done up track with a lot of variations in terms of background music and singing, more of English rap included.

Next up is the only romantic track of the album, "Zoobi Doobi", and taking us through this groovy number are the singers best adept at rendering love ballads- Shreya Ghoshal and Sonu Nigam. A jazz style composition, more on the lines of the rocking fifties, and therefore the orchestra too has been set keeping in mind the retro style of the song, as can be heard by the use of lots of bead sounds, saxophone, trumpet and drums. Even the singing by Sonu and Shreya, their voice modulations ring in that evergreen era where Shammi Kapoor's romantic songs ruled the roost. Shantanu showed us his hold over retro music with "Kaisi Paheli Zindagani" (PARINEETA) and once again he has brilliantly handled the song. Swanand's lyrics add that charm that was required to make it into a classy love song. "Jaisa filmon mein hota hai, Ho raha hai hoo bahoo" . The only dampener - it has unmistakable traces from Aamir Khan's very own "Mr. Lova Lova" (ISHQ) and Abhishek Bachchan's "Bure Bure/ Bore Bore" (BLUFFMASTER).

"Zoobi Doobi Remix" is by Dj A-Myth/Darshan who does well to keep the track light and the fun element alive by just adding heightened rhythm and pace.
Shantanu's Bengal connections come to the fore with "Behti Hawa Sa Tha Woh", a composition that takes us back to the S. D. Burman days, with a distinct Rabindra Sangeet touch to its soulful melody. A classy number that will initially appeal to a select few but it does have the required charisma to grow after a few hearings. An entirely situational song that flows with the narrative of the movie and sung to perfection by the pride of Hindi film music industry, Shaan, whose youthful fresh vocals match those of the lead protagonists who play college going students, with the composer himself providing good support. The backup vocals are enchanting and so is the tune which may be slow but its certainly not boring. Once again Swanand's lyrics are like an embellished jewel that adorns a crown. The beautiful poetic way in which the comparison is made, it brings to life the characters of the film, especially the lead protagonist, Aamir Khan who is compared to "Behti hawa, Udti patang, Sulagti dhoop mein chhaon ke jaisa, Registan mein gaon ke jaisa, Baadal awara etc", some really nice similes, which shows Swanand's hold over the medium.

The mood once again gets somber as the album comes to close with "Jaane Nahin Denge Tujhe", another entirely situational track about friends sticking to each other through thick and thin and giving emotional support to a friend in crisis. The number at first appears to be a slow serious number but it's misleading and as the high pitched 'antara' unfolds one is simply bamboozled by Sonu's amazing rendition, as he effortlessly stretches his vocals to the limit, making it an audio treat. The sheer determination of not letting go of a dear friend is conveyed so effectively through both, excellent singing and wonderful music arrangements and the lyrics that the listener is coerced into believing it. The excellent alternate soft and high pitched tune is well supported by the superb orchestra in the background, almost similar to the climax of a western classical symphony.

Summing up the album, it's another classy outing by the team with outstanding compositions in the form of "All Izz Well" and "Zoobi Doobi". The popularity of the rest of the numbers will once again depend upon the quotient of success of the film. What must be added here is that one expected a lot from the album, especially because it has Aamir Khan as the lead actor, but it is certainly a touch disappointing (taking nothing away from the hard work done by all involved), if we keep in mind and compare the outstanding scores in Aamir Khan campus/youth based movies like DIL CHAHTA HAI and RANG DE BASANTI, which were not only classy but also appealed to the city segments of the mass.

'3 Idiots' Music Has Youthful Energy

It’s a soundtrack that’s sure to click. Shantanu Moitra, who had scored the music for Rajkumar Hirani’s “Lage Raho Munnabhai”, returns with “3 Idiots” and has churned out songs that are catchy, different and high on energy.

The much-awaited film, which stars Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, has five original numbers and two remixes.

The soundtrack opens with “All Izz Well”, a fun campus song that is filled with whistles in the background. Crooned by Sonu Niigaam, Swanand Kirkire and Shaan, the catchy song is already doing the rounds of music channels and is sure to be a chartbuster.

The song also has a remix version that has more beats.

Next is “Zoobi doobi”, the only song with a female voice. Sung by Sonu Niigaam Shreya Ghoshal, the track has a retro feel. It is a melodious number that grows on you.

“Zoobi doobi” too has a remix version with more contemporary sounds.

Then comes “Behti hawa sa tha woh” that has Shaan and Shantanu Moitra behind the mike. It has a long prelude and seems to be a situational track. The poignant, slow number has soft musical backing and is very appealing.

Up next is “Give me some sunshine” that includes dialogues by Sharman Joshi and vocals by Suraj Jagan. The song is an unplugged version and will appeal to the younger generation mainly because of the composition and the song’s rebel attitude.

The album offers a very nice song in “Jaane nahin denge” sung by Sonu Niigaam
This reminds you that there is a reason Sonu Niigaam is considered as the no. 1 singer in the hindi film industry today, You will feel like crying with Sonu when he almost does it himself in the number. He combines it with anger, prayer, nostalgia…phew! Way to go, Sonu! One of the antaras takes you to the nostalgic last antara in Sandese aatein hain (Border, 1997). It gets an edge with a sudden increase in tempo during the course of the song. There is minimal orchestration and focus on vocals. The lyrics are raw and intense.

On the whole, the album is a good mix of slow and fast-paced songs. Shantanu Moitra has scored quality music that has melody and generates lots of interest.

Film: “3 Idiots”; Music Director: Shantanu Moitra; Lyricist: “Swanand Kirkire”; Singers: Sonu Niigaam, Swanand Kirkire, Shaan, Shreya Ghosal, Shantanu Moitra and Suraj Jagan; Rating: *****

AKG Powers Sonic At Indian Rock Festival

As 50,000 students from across Southeast Asia flooded into the AIIMS campus for the PULSE festival in September, Asian rock bands Sonu Nigaam, Euphoria and Motherjane were preparing to rock the crowd with AKG's DMS 700 series digital microphone.

Over the next seven days, the three bands performed with other Asian superstars using an array of Harman products that included Soundcraft mixers, Crown amplifiers and AKG microphones, provided by Audio Design.

The festival, which was co-sponsored by Harman International's professional division's India distributor Hi-Tech Audio Systems, went from September 16 - September 22 and featured a variety of events that included a fashion show, various dance and singing competitions, a fine arts competition, and multiple concerts.

Harman Professional played a central role at each event; whether they were mixing the sound with the Soundcraft MH4 or delivering uninterrupted vocal tones with the AKG's DMS 700 series digital microphone. AKG was used every day and drew praise from many of the bands who used them, including Sonu Niigaam & Palash Sen.

Navneet Wadhwa, Director of Audio Design, said: "We selected AKG for its warmth, versatility and reliability. As one of the largest professional rental companies in India, we are very familiar with the sonic integrity and pristine audio quality that AKG is known for, and we knew that it would exceed expectations for both the crowds and the performers. We selected the DMS 700 Digital Wireless Microphone Series with the D5 head. The D5 head has a fantastic gain structure, which in turn gives us a lot of headroom at the mix console and its output is indeed the most natural sounding."

Students from countries all across Southeast Asia came to the show, hailing from countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and more. There were events held day and night throughout the week, with various food and games continuing everywhere in addition to the shows. Gifts and prizes were handed out to the participants and winners of various events.

Sushil S. John, Regional Sales Director for Harman Professional in Central Asia, said: "We are very excited to see our products used in such a grand and exciting event. Audio Design's decision to use Harman Professional for such a versatile application underscores all of our products ability to handle even the most complex events with ease."

Classical Music Is The ultimate: Ustad Rashid Khan

Mumbai: Gunidas Sammelan is among the few such events in the city which have preserved and promoted the true and rare art of Hindustani classical music. As the 33rd sammelan takes place in the city, After Hrs caught up with Ustad Rashid Khan, who performs at the festival and belongs to the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana. He was awarded the Padma Shri, as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006. Even Pandit Bhimsen Joshi is believed to have said once that Rashid Khan holds the true potential and promise for the future of Indian vocal music.

Khan likes to concentrate purely on the classical style of music and is not really tempted to run the rat race of the Hindi film industry.

"Classical music is the ultimate. You may feel that the younger generation doesn't listen to classical music, but actually there are hundreds of amazing classical songs present today, existing either with fusion music or pure, which are really loved by the younger generation," he says.

Khan's Aao ge jab song in the film Jab We Met is a classic example. This classical song has a slow melodious and romantic tone and is considered among the best songs from the movie. "Classical music will continue to exist forever," he says. However, Khan is not happy with the general state of music that is being produced in the industry. "I feel that there is less of 'gaana' and more of 'bajaana' in most of the music you hear today. It doesn't mean that I am criticising anybody but there are certain really random songs you hear in movies today which have no head or tail," he remarks.

But he holds musicians and singers such as Sonu Niigaam, AR Rahman, Shankar Mahadevan, Jagjit Singh and Hariharan in high regard. He says, "All of these musicians have learnt classical music since inception. They really know the value of good music."

Raju Hirani. Shantanu Moitra & Swanand Kirkire Speak About '3 Idiots'

Raju: I like all the songs, each on a different occasion. But 'Jaane Nahin Denge Tujhe' would be my favourite because Sonu Niigaam has sung it in a way which is very unusual. Jab usne gaana gaya, hum logon ke roongte khade ho gaye, we were shocked. What we are trying to say is that these three idiots were actually probably the sanest people but the world thought that they were idiots.

Shantanu: Yes the song has an unusual structure, its operatic in style, has minimal music and the power comes from voice. Sonu Niigaam has used an amazing vocal technique where he's singing on one-and-a-half octaves, which is incredible.

Music Review: Aamir's 3 Idiots !!

It's that film of the year and we are waiting with baited breath for the last significant release of 2009. The music of 3 Idiots was released online via a live videoconference on the movie's official portal. Odd, you say? But then it is an Aamir Khan film, so you can only expect the unexpected.

The Munnabhai producers rope in their regular Shantanu Moitra-Swanand Kirkire team – who bear the burden of scoring a soundtrack that has to click at all costs.

The theme song Aal Izz Well should be a campus anthem in no time. Enthusiastically sung by Sonu Niigaam and brilliantly picturised, Aal Izz Well has a catchy hook. The composition has the right punch to work on the big screen.

But the remaining songs require patient listening. The tunes take some time to register and don't have an instant recall. Zoobi Doobi is a retro Bollywood track that draws references from the Shammi Kapoor rock n roll era. Sonu's singing style is similar to what he did with the Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi parody.Shreya Ghosal brings in a saccharine sweetness to the melody. Expectedly picturised on Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor, it might just be that much-hyped sensuous rain song everyone is talking about.

Behti Hawa is arranged on the semi classical lines of Parineeta. There is an overbearing sense of longing and nostalgia to the track. Shaan does a commendable job with the singing. It's a song about missing a lost friend, so there is obviously a situational element to it. After hearing it a couple of times the tune stays with you. But in terms of overall design it bears the stamp of a Vidhu Vinod Chopra production.

Sharman Joshi opens Give Me Some Sunshine with a little voice over. The song then moves into a chorus about youngsters wanting to go back in time. The emotion about stressed out students looking to relive their youth is heartwarming. There is an easy soft rock like feel to the song – the kind closet musicians croon across campus hostels.

Sonu Niigaam gets into Tanhai (Dil Chahta Hai) mode with Jaane Nahi Denge. The lyrics are raw and intense and so is Sonu's singing. A song about holding back a friend, it's almost like a continuation of Behti Hawa.

The two remixes are obviously included to end the album on a lighter note. You end up liking Zoobi Doobi a little more in its neat remix version. The remix brings back memories of the relatively unknown Tumse Mili Nazar (Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon). Aal Izz Well has more of a conventional techno music video like remix.

From the promos one gets the feeling of a frothy, youthful mad comedy. But there is obviously more to the film than just jokes. Save for Aal Izz Well and Zoobi Doobi to some extent, the other songs are extremely situational - pretty intensely arranged and worded.

3 Idiots is going to be an instant chartbuster like Ghajini
But like Rang De Basanti, if the movie clicks, the tracks will justify their meaning
For now the team deserves praise for keeping the quality high.

Singing, Music & Facing The Camera !!

It is still not widely known that Mukesh had also acted as hero in Nirdosh (1941), his debut film as playback singer. Not successful as an actor, Mukesh even produced a film. But Talat Mahmood was simultaneously a successful singing star for a while.
There were so many singers and composers who were seen on screen playing themselves, from Lata Mangeshkar in Pukar and Shankar-Jaikishan in Main Sundar Hoon to Pankaj Udhas in films like Naam and Yeh Dillagi. But among those who played regular roles (as in with a bit of a performance) were Laxmikant as himself in Teri Kasam (with music by R.D.Burman!).

Recently, Bappi Lahiri acted as a shop-owner in Main Aur Mrs Khanna - incidentally he also produced films like Rock Dancer and even a National award-winning Bengali film! Anu Malik (like so many other music artistes) appeared as himself, including as judge in music shows, in some films, but also acted in Luck By Chance and played a pandit in Bride And Prejudice.
R.D.Burman chose to etch comic characters in both Bhoot Bungla and Pyar Ka Mausam while Aadesh Shrivastava acted as a club singer in the well-known Dhadkan zaraa ruk gayi hai in Prahaar. Music director S.N.Tripathi was well-known as an actor. Wajid of Sajid-Wajid has played a key role in Wanted.
Shaan tried his hand rather apprehensively at acting with Daman, while Sonu Niigaam tried his hand at being a full-fledged leading man in three films, Jaani Dushmun - Ek Anokhi Kahani, Kaash...Aap Hamare Hote and Love In Nepal. Kumar Sanu produced a Hindi film, Utthaan, and a Bengali one, while Udit Narayan produced several Bhojpuri films.

Among lyricists, Gulzar chose to move towards scriptwriting and later direction rather than keep struggling as lyricist. Rajendra Krishan invested his huge income in backing his producer brother Hargobind, whose hit films include Doli and Jwar Bhata. Veteran Kaifi Azmi turned to acting late with Naseem, while Amit Khanna went on to produce, write and direct films. Interestingly, lyricist Farukh Kaiser was assistant to director Raj Khosla but never directed a film. And Shaily Shailendra wrote the story of the hit thriller Khel Khel Mein and his legendary father Shailendra’s health took a tumble after he produced the critically-appreciated flop, Teesri Kasam and suffered losses.

Hridaynath Mangeshkar produced Lekin, a Lata Mangeshkar presentation - Lata, incidentally, has also produced films in Marathi. Another producer was Anup Jalota, though his films did not do well, while Talat Aziz’s Dhun, whose music made a mark, never got a release after being completed.
Salil Chowdhury co-wrote Bimal Roy films like Do Bigha Zamin, Parakh and Naukri and even directed Pinjre Ka Panchhi, Anil Biswas acted in Ladli, and Naushad wrote the story of Palki (officially) and many others unofficially, besides producing films like Babul and Udan Khatola. Hemant Kumar produced so many films, notably Bees Saal Baad and Khamoshi, besides being a singer and composer in demand.

But the really ambitious names were Vishal Bhardwaj and Himesh Reshammiya. Vishal Bhardwaj first ventured into making serials and then took to writing, directing and producing even internationally-applauded films like Makdee, Maqbool, Omkara and Kaminey. Himesh Reshammiya started his career producing and scripting television serials because getting a break in music was difficult and then, after peaking as music director and singer, went on to don the hero’s role, beginning with the hit Aap Kaa Surroor. Today, Himesh is doing five films as a composer-singer and actor, with Radio hitting the screen early next month.

Sonu Niigaam & Family Meets Swami Ji

21-10-09 6:15 p.m., we were at the hall, which was packed to its maximum, and in fact, there were many at the gates. A procession of Veda chanting students led Swami into the hall. A huge carpeted stage had been set up and the famous playback singer, Sonu Niigaam and his troupe awaited Swami.

There were easily 60,000 people there and the stage displayed a huge picture of Swami in the abhayahastha pose with the words - The Creator and His Creation. Swami came out of the car and was onto the stage via the ramp. He sat there and faced the audience who were thrilled and filled with devotional fervour. Minutes later, Sonu Niigaam came up to Swami with his wife and child and sought His blessings. Swami blessed him and his cute child too. After this, Sonu Niigaam began his performance. He started with the song Sai Baba Bolo from the film Shirdi Ke Sai Baba

As Sonu Niigaam continued to sing, every eye was riveted on Swami and the Lord seemed to turn to the sides to have a look at the devotees everywhere. Soon He moved to all directions and was so happy; the devotees were of course ecstatic. After Sonu’s performance concluded, Swami materialized a ring for the singer. He was all smiles as the Lord slipped the ring into his finger. It was now well past 7 p.m. Mangala aarthi was performed and Swami blessed the swelling congregation. It was 7:15 p.m. as Swami left the hall.

Sonu Niigaam's Anthem For 26/11

On November 2008, the world was shocked and Mumbai aghast as the terrorists went on a rampage. The scars are fresh, and the memories still alive. Scores of people laid down their lives, Mumbai still writhes in the agony. On November 26th 2009, Mumbai will reverberate, not with gunshots but with sounds of compassion. 15 prominent singers of Bollywood, along with Amitabh Bacchan, will join for a special anthem for Mumbaikars.

The Anthem which has been initiated by the Mumbai police will be led by
Sonu Niigaam. The galaxy of singers, besides Amitabh Bacchan are Shaan, Kailash Kher, Roop Kumar Rathod, Hariharan, Jagjit Singh, Shankar Mahadevan, Sunidhi Chauhan, Suresh Wadkar, Talat Aziz,Alka Yagnik, Mahalaxmi , Kunal Ganjawala and Richa Sharma.

Sonu Nigam in conversation with HT City said, “I can’t tell you how special this anthem is for all of us. Since we feel collectively for the cause and respect each other, the end product is even better then we expected it to be.”

The anthem will be accompanied by a special video that will be shot at the venue.

The verse, “Ungli uthe to, koi badhe to, kar degi baghawat Mumbai” (if one tries to raise a finger, or if he comes in our way, Mumbai will retaliate) stands for communal harmony and unity.

Brimming with Patriotic fervor, this is a multi-lingual song with verses in Hindi, English and Marathi. This song will linger in one’s memory for years to come.

Meera was a known on the evening slot of Mirchi in Mumbai, but was proferred the breakfast slot when she was poached by Big FM. Sonu Niigaam & Big B lends There Voice's To City's Anthem

Mumbai: As Mumbai prepares to look back at the tragedy that unfolded a year ago, on 26/11, the city police -- which lost some of its bravest men on that fateful day -- approached singer Sonu Niigaam to compose an anthem that salutes the spirit of the city.

Among those who will be lending their voice to this endeavour is actor Amitabh Bachchan."A tribute yes, but more on the spirit of Mumbai, its resilience and its character of being able to withstand all storms. You may try to damage us, but you will never succeed in bending or breaking us," Bachchan told DNA.

Sonu Niigaam added: "The Mumbai police approached me to compose a soulful song that will be the anthem for Mumbai. I don't think any city in India has an anthem. This is the first time a particular city will have its own song." The song also pays homage to the hundreds of people who lost their lives in the carnage.
Apart from Bachchan, the song also features 14 prominent singers, including Sonu Niigaam, Hariharan, Shaan, Kailash Kher, Jagjit Singh, Suresh Wadkar, Kunal Ganjawala, Talat Aziz, Roop Kumar Rathod, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shankar Mahadevan, Alka Yagnik, Richa Sharma and Mahalaxmi Iyer.

"We all think it's a lovely concept and wanted to do our bit for the cause," said Sonu. "The lyrics of the song have been written by Subuu and having Amitabh Bachchan to sing for it was an honour. His coming on board has made the initiative's aim a fruitful one."

Sonu Niigaam Sings With Amitabh Bachchan

From Amitabh's blog in his own words...

But by 6.30 it was pushing iron and chasing images on the tread mill. The yoga, the BP measurement, the information transfer to the doctor and straight into a recording studio, lending my voice figuratively and otherwise to the cause of the 26/11 tragedy. Sonu Niigaam, that talented singer from our world of film and pop and classical had asked me to participate in a song that he was doing for those whom we lost that fateful day. I did. Many different singers from our trade had participated in it to lend it a spirit of togetherness and strength. Of faith in our independence, and the love for those that became ours in defending our freedom. I am joyed by the effort and give voice to it and then
it was back to PAA and its dubbing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many artists from the film world have lended there voice to the track
which will be released soon !!

I am so proud of Sonu Niigaam ji, he is a true musician & has given so much to many
of us & there is lots to come yet !!

Sonu Niigaams Tribute To 26/11

The Mumbai Police has grand plans to hold a day-long commemoration on the first anniversary of the 26/11 terror attacks, but the Home Ministry may force them to tone down some of the events.

The grand event – which is the brainchild of Commissioner of Police D Sivanandhan and is being organised by Lintas Events – will be held at the Gateway of India on November 26. Celebrities and citizens, including school and college children, will take part in a series of cultural events to pay homage to those who lost their lives in last year’s terror attacks.

While the intentions are very noble, sources say the Home Department – which has seen some well-intentioned events post-26/11 backfire – is jittery. It is mulling over certain changes to tone down the pomp before giving its go ahead.

“Such programmes are always welcome and cannot be discouraged. However, the department is considering some changes, but the modalities have not yet been decided,” said an official from the ministry.

Additional Chief Secretary Chandra Iyenger told Mumbai Mirror, “Any decision on the event can only be taken after the government is formed.”

What police have in store

According to Sivanandhan and Lintas officials, the ceremony they have planned is divided into two parts: a day-long event involving students and an evening ceremony with celebrities, politicians and citizens.

School and college students will participate in activities such as painting, singing, etc. They will perform skits on security and police action during the attacks, and will showcase security upgrades. Events will be punctuated with prayer songs performed by school kids.

“The theme of the event is Abhedya Mumbai – an effort to show that if we all stand together, we cannot be defeated. That is why everyone from school children to celebrities and politicians is being engaged.

“The evening event will be graced by people like Amitabh Bachchan, Sonu Niigaam, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosale . Home Minister P Chidambaram, the CM and DCM will also be there,” said Sivanandhan.

Lintas officials added that the evening event will be characterised by people expressing their views on security.

“These expressions can be in any form: singing, painting or anything else. Media personnel, policemen who fought during 26/11 and even ordinary citizens will be allowed to speak on security. The idea is to come together on the issue of security, to start believing in each other and having a sense of collective responsibility,” said Sujit Nair, president of Lintas Events.
