Finally! A show for all of the North American Desis who sit in front of their TVs singing along to Sa Re Ga Ma Pa or Indian Idol.
Time to drop your fake hairbrush mics and tune up your sitar….India’s coming for you.
A search contest exclusively for the next big South Asian “vocal or instrumental talent” is coming to the east coast called I Am Next Superstar. (That’s not a typo in the title…maybe they left the “the” behind in India?)
Anyway, STAR India PLUS and Third Eye Ventures are bringing the show overseas to Canada and the U.S. to recruit music fans who may not otherwise have the opportunity to travel to India.
The reality-style show is split up into three categories: I Am Next Superstar, Junior (for contestants age 7-14), and Music-Video Star (for contestants who want to make their own music video). Over the past few months, audition videos have been rolling in. Semi-finals will be held this December in California and New York for the top 20 submissions for a chance to move on to finals in New Jersey. And the overall winner — chosen in the concert-style grande finale — will get a chance to record a single and star in a music video for the song in India!
But that’s not even the best part. Judges and esteemed music icons Sonu Nigam and Suresh Wadkar will mentor and train the contestants along the way. Private voice lessons from the “Ishq Bina” singer? Not too shabby.
Even though the show wasn’t granted a full season (like its well-known Indian counterparts), it’s nice to see established names in the Indian music industry making an effort to harness international Desi talent. And since the contest is open to people from all musical backgrounds, Wadkar claims:
It’s a great opportunity for participants to learn the nuances of music and hone their skills through this contest and claim deserving fame.
The show’s finale will air on STAR India PLUS sometime in January 2011.
