Amjad Sabri is carrying forward a musical legacy that his family claims has descended from Tansen One of the newer entrants is qawwal Amjad Sabri. After the success of his song for the film Halla Bol, Bollywood recently called on qawwal singer Amjad Sabri once again to direct the music of the film Ek Aur Gunnah. The deal had been signed years ago but work was postponed after the series of terrorist attacks in Mumbai on November 26, 2008. This will not be Sabri’s first step into Bollywood. His song “More Haji Piya” for Halla Bol received acclaim when it was released in 2007. The video for “More Haji Piya” featured actors Ajay Devgan and Vidya Balan as well as Sabri.
The son of qawwali legend Ghulam Farid Sabri, Amjad Sabri is carrying forward a musical legacy that his family claims has descended from Tansen. Talking about his father, Sabri said, “My father has played a vital role in my upbringing and he is my identity”. Sabri told Daily Express last month, “I will be working with renowned (Indian) musicians Sonu Nigam, Kailash Kher, Shreya Ghoshal and Sukhwinder Singh.” Many Pakistani singers have been featured on Indian film soundtracks, but very few have ventured into composing them.
Amjad Sabri joins an illustrious list of names – Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Adnan Sami Khan, Najam Sheraz and Nauman Javed. Nusrat Fateh Ali directed the music for Kartoos, Aur Pyar Ho Gaya and Kachche Dhaage. He composed eight songs for Kachche Dhaage and worked with Anu Malik for the sound track of Kartoos. Nusrat also appeared in a song (“Koi Jaane”) for the film Aur Pyar Ho Gaya, which starred actors Bobby Deol and Aishwarya Rai. Adnan Sami moved to India several years ago and directed the music of Sadiyaan, Mumbai Salsa and Lucky – No Time for Love. Sami also composed the soundtrack of the Shahid Kapoor – Genelia D’Souza film Chance Pe Dance.
Najam Sheraz is the latest addition to the league of Pakistan’s musical exports. The “In Se Nein” singer guest-directed the upcoming film Shaapit’s music with Chirantan Bhatt and Aditya Narayan. Upcoming singer Nauman Javed is currently working on the music of Yamla Pagla Deewana. Directed by Sameer Kartin and produced by Dharmendra, the film features two tracks in Javed’s voice. Javed had earlier sung “Mein Chala” for Mahesh Bhatt’s film Jashnn, which starred Pakistani actor Humayun Saeed.
The film tanked at the box office but helped Javed establish himself with Indian and Pakistani music fans. But fame in India is not the only card up Sabri’s sleeve. The singer will soon tour Canada and the US too. He is currently working on a collection of ghazals and qawwalis for an upcoming album.
Singer surprised it is not included in the just released album
Sonu Niigaam recently tweeted about not being informed about the Raavan music launch on Saturday, even though he had recorded a song for the film. On Monday, he tweeted, "Ravana's music launched. I am a part of it, and I learnt about it from the TV." An hour after tweeting this message, he withdrew it, when he realised his song is not a part of the album. He then tweeted, "Sang for Ravana. Guess the song doesn't exist anymore. The one in Tamil is still there by the way. So don't bother guys."
Sonu still doesn't know what happened to the song, whether music director A R Rahman just didn't include it in the album or had it recorded again by someone else.
Sonu and Rahman have earlier worked on several hit songs including Kismet se tum (Pukar), Satrangi re (Dil Se), Ishq Bina (Taal), Saathiya (Saathiya), Rang De Basanti, Sarfaroshi ki tamanna (Legend of Bhagat Singh), and In lamhon ke daaman mein (Jodhaa Akbar).

Director Jagmohan Mundhra, who has always portrayed real-life issues in his film is now making 'Apartment' on the risks of sharing apartment with strangers, a common phenomenon in Mumbai.
Apartment' is a contemporary story, set in today's Mumbai, where life is fast paced. You have people coming in every day in the city of Mumbai, not knowing where they would stay because of the space crunch and the steep real estate prices. Therefore, they share rooms with complete strangers,' Mundhra told IANS.
'It's not a horror film. It's not fear of the unknown; it's a fear of the known. It's a thriller,' said Mundhra.
'Apartment' is based on a girl who comes from a small town. Preeti Sengupta (Tanushree Dutta) is an airhostess living in with her boyfriend Karan Malhotra (Rohit Roy).
Preeti is possessive and has issues with trust. When she suspects her boyfriend to be unfaithful, she throws him out of the house but soon realizes she can't afford the payment of the apartment on her own.
Neha Bhardwaj (Neetu Chandra), a small-town girl comes and asks for accommodation. Very impressed by her simplicity, Preeti believes she has found a perfect roommate. Slowly things begin to go wrong.

The Sugababes are coming to Mumbai. This hot English female pop group from London will perform live at the IPL on April 25th. But there’s something else on their agenda, too — they will be recording with Sonu Niigaam.
Sonu’s ready with three tracks that he has composed himself. He will record one of them with the Sugababes. “The tracks are totally mainstream,” says Sonu. Talking about the collaboration, he says, “Their music is really good. I did a lot of study on their kind of music and with my programming team, we’ve come up with three tracks.” The Guinness Book of World Records has named the Sugababes as the most successful female act of the 21st century, thanks to seven UK No. 1 singles and 18 UK Top 10 hits. Sonu is naturally excited about this collaboration and he’s also enjoying his new role as a singer-cum-composer. “Until recently, I was just a singer, but now I’m really enjoying making music along with singing. I have always been interested in music, gadgets, software and now it’s coming to my help,” he says.
And since he’s going global, was there any special preparation? “I did a lot of research on the contemporary music scenario. I spent time upgrading my sound sense and I feel now I’m able to get the kind of sound which is acceptable worldover,” he says. Music apart, will the video with the Sugababes be quite a bold one? “It’s going to be very interesting for me and the Sugababes,” smiles Sonu.
This do was held to launch a multi-utility residential complex, Prateek Laurel from the Prateek Group, and the hosts Prashant Tiwari, chairman and MD, Prateek Group, and his wife, Kalpana Tiwari, made sure that everyone had a great time.
The evening started with a performance by singer Akriti Kakkar, who mesmerised the guests with chartbusters like Kajra Re, Chance Pe Dance, etc. After her performance, a Russian group enticed everybody with a laser show. But the best bit was yet to come – Sonu Niigaam’s performance. He crooned Shukran Allah among other numbers, which had his fans humming along. Gauahar Khan was the emcee here, and she made sure the event was a lively one.
We are all aware of the wonders of technology. Modern inventions have made communicating over a distance not only possible, but easier and convenient. Concepts like tele-interviews, video-conferences, e-learning etc. have truly made our lives easier. But Sonu Nigam takes it to another level altogether! India’s celebrated singer accomplished an exceptional feat recently when he recorded songs over Skype!
Sonu was in the US for a professional commitment. He was expected to complete his business and return to India for his pending assignments. However, the stay was extended for some reasons and clashed with his Bollywood projects. The singer was in a fix when technology came to his rescue. He had the songs sent to him through the Internet and worked on them on his laptop. “I would book a studio and then, with my mixers on laptops, I would record the songs over Skype. I recorded Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and English songs,” says the versatile singer.
Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice calls over the Internet. Clearly the process went pretty smoothly as Sonu was able to record almost 45 songs in this fashion. This procedure was earlier used by US-based music professor Joseph Pisano, to get experts to instruct his students in classrooms. So does this indicate the advent of tele-music? It has worked so far but will it well-received and utilized commercially? We’re sure Sonu, for one will vouch for it!
It is a devil’s work? Is it a Bootha Cheste? Yes it seems from the description of ‘Antharathma’ briefing of the media. In two cases the witch craft comes in to affect – one for love failure and the other one for taking revenge. These two are clubbed in newcomer B Shanker’s ‘Anatharathma’ Kannada cinema that has finished the shoot and the audio was released at St John Medical College auditorium in Bangalore on Saturday evening. Kannada audience saw such witch craft from the days of ‘Naa Ninna Bidalare’ till ‘Yaradhu’. The graphics is very special in this film you see and tell says director B Shanker with lot of enthusiasm.
Mithun Tejaswi, Vishaka Singh and Rohan Gowda head the cast of this debut direction of B Shanker. He studied direction in Kannada Film Directors Association and later went to USA for studying the nuances of film direction in Universal Studio. Shanker worked for sometime with director Kodlu Ramakrishna before taking up this film.
What is notable at the audio release of this film made by actor, producer and director Dwarakish is that one lakh CD’s have been sold by Promos 9 headed by Krishnakumar. After the film release it would increase to 2 lakhs he says with confidence.
Giridhar Diwan has scored the music for the songs in the album of ‘Antharathma’. KG Krishna and M Jayadev are the executive producers of this film.

07 Salam Salam Namaste Singer : Kunal Ganjawala, Kathik, Mangala ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Who can forget Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze romancing to Righteous Brothers Unchained Melody in the Hollywood blockbuster Ghost? This was moderated by psychic Whoopi Goldberg, of course. Cut to Sandalwood, and Antarathma promises to recreate equally magical moments for the Sandalwood fans.
“I play a dead mans spirit who wants to protect his wife. While the concept is pretty similar to the classic, Ghost, we have our own little adaptation in place,” says Mithun Tejasvi, who plays lead in the film. Playing his love interest is Vishakha Singh of Housefull fame, while Umashri has essayed the role of the psychic in this film.
It was Mithun who informed us of the Kannada rendition of Unchained Melody. “Lola Lola, sung by Sonu Niigaam, is going to have the popular tune,” he says. Mithun, who has been dabbling with both Tamil and Kannada films lately, feels that the audience will truly enjoy this film. “I consider the script to be the hero of the film. Im confident that Anatarathma will satisfy the audience,” says Mithun, whose film is slated to release later this month.

It’s a long time since we had a period film in Tamil. The producers and the directors are terrified at doing a period film for the want of time, money and the efforts to create authentic details. When we say period film we don’t mean costume dramas like Imsai Arasan or Jaganmohini. We mean some thing like ‘Lagaan’ where the story happens in tune with the classic era.
AGS Entertainment which is producing many quality films of late has dared to venture into the difficult category of period films. The also have ‘Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam’ up for release which is a kind of remembering a bygone era, But the same banner is also the producer of a genuine period film in ‘Madharasapattinam’.
As the name suggests the film ‘Madharasapattinam’ is a period drama set in the back drop of pre-independence India in the then Madras under British Raj. To be more particular the film is set in the Madras of the 40s and takes place in Vannarapettai (Washermanpet) area.
‘Madharasapattinam’ is written and directed by A L. Vijay who has earned a name for him with city subjects like ‘Kireedam’ and ‘Poi Solla Porom’ before. This period drama will be a different experience for AL Vijay to prove that he is good at all genres.
‘Madharasapattinam’ is a story of a dhobi, who is also a wrestling champ. Problems arises when a British girl Amy Wilkinson falls in love with the Indian boy as it was forbidden back then.
Arya who had a tremendous response for ‘Naan Kadavul’ but failed to receive the same applause for the next ‘Sarvam’. Here Arya plays the role of Ilamparthi, a dhobi who is also a wrestling champ. So Arya is hoping this film would resurrect his career which started off with very hopes. Arya knows the importance and has said from his heart ‘Madharasapattinam’ is bigger than his market value. The earnest actor is said to have performed his character with at most faithfulness much to the delight of his director. Arya says he had to work hard on his physique for the wrestler role. He also says that he wanted to look convincing as a wrestler and did his home work to imitate how a wrestler would fight, walk, or for that matter, behave in public.
Amy Jackson, the British actress who has also won the Miss Teen World title plays the role called Amy Wilkinson, the 18-year-old daughter of the governor of ‘Madharasapattinam’ who falls in love with Arya, the wrestler-dhobi.
Nasser, late Cochin Haneefa, Alexx O’Neil, MS Bhaskar and Bala Singh play other important roles in the film.
Music of the film is by G V Prakash. G V Prakash must have already tested the requirements for ‘Madharasapattinam’ while doing ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ to some extent. The audio of the film was launched on April 4 in style. Kamal Haasan and Director Shankar released the audio from a set that re resembled the colonial era in every detail.
‘Madharasapattinam’ boasts of six songs penned by Na. Muthukumar. Roop Kumar Rathod, Harini, Andrea Jeremiah, G V. Prakash, Udit Narayan, VMC. Haneefa, Amy Jackson, Seenu, Naveen Iyer, Sonu Nigam, Saindhavi, Hariharan, Zia, Augustin Choir have rendered the songs.
Actor Cheeyan Vikram has also rendered a song 'Meghame Oh Meghame' with regal Madras feels and he has sung in five different voices, including that of a dhobi, a teacher and an old man. MS Viswanathan and Naseer have also performed with Vikram for this song.
Nirav Shah who worked for A L Vijay in ‘Kireedom’ and done most of Arya’s films till date is the cinematographer. Nirav’s camera work will be a special value to the film.
Editing is by Antony, Art Direction is by V Selvakumar and make up is by Pattanam Rasheed.
One of the expected films this year ‘Madharasapattinam’ is scheduled for this summer release.
