Voice messaging company, Bubble Motion has raised $10 million in a funding round led by SingTel’s VC arm SingTel Innov8, with participation from Singapore’s Infocomm Investments and existing investors Sequoia Capital, Palomar Ventures, and NGC. It had earlier received $6 million in series-C funding from Palomar Ventures, Sequoia Capital and Comcast Interactive Capital, in 2009.
The company intends to use the raised funding to extend its voice-based social messaging service Bubbly, to new markets, while scaling its technology platform which has been adopted by many mobile operators in Asia. Also, it will expand Bubbly to additional mobile platforms including new operator networks, the mobile Web and smartphone applications. The service was launched last year.
According to the company, Bubbly has over 7 million users across 4 countries (India, Indonesia, Japan and Philippines), with 3 million being paid users. It has delivered more than 250 million bubble messages through the service.
It has operator partnerships with Bharti Airtel (SingTel has a 32.15% stake in Bharti Airtel) and Reliance in India. Airtel had launched a voice blogging service called Airtel Blog last year, using the Bubbly platform and had signed up BBC News for a premium voice blog service.
Celebrity voice bloggers on the platform include Amitabh Bachchan, Lara Dutta, Sonu Nigam among others. Interestingly, according to a report, Amitabh Bachchan had more followers on Bubbly than he has on Twitter.
