Lata Mangeshkar, Nevaan Nigam Steal Sarhadein Show!

With her inimitable sense of humour, Lata Mangeshkar named each of the other singers on the album and said that they had sung very well, adding finally, “Aur Lata ne bhi accha gaaya hai!” as she broke into a mischievous smile.
The other scene-stealer at the music release was Nevaan Nigam, Sonu Niigaam’s son, who was on the dais, sang the sargam, but was otherwise least bothered about the adults around as he clutched his gifts and had a blast with fellow child singer Saanjali Khadikar, Lata’s grand-niece. The two prodigies also sparkled in the audiovisual shown to the audience. Lata also made it a point to invite the technicians on stage, including the arrangers and recording engineers.

The occasion was the launch of Sarhadein: Music Beyond Boundaries on April 12 at a Mumbai suburban five-star. “Such is the power of music that it transcends countries, cultures, religions and generations and brings people together,” said Apurv Nagpal of Saregama.

A landmark concept driven by none other than Lata Mangeshkar, the album has a rare duet by Lata Mangeshkar and Mehdi Hasan (written by by Pakistan’s Farhat Shahzad) and features Usha Mangeshkar, Suresh Wadkar, Hariharan, Sonu Niigaam, Rekha Bhardwaj and another Pakistani singer, Ghulam Ali.

Javed Akhtar’s lyrics have been composed by Mayuresh Pai. Adarsh Gupta, Music Business Head of Saregama, described the album as “an amalgamation of the very best of talents from the sub-continent. The simple thought behind the CD is ‘Let’s unite with music’. A very special thanks to Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkarji, under whose guidance this exceptional concept has shaped into a milestone album that not only crosses borders but also generations and ages as it marks the arrival of GenNext artistes Nevaan and Saanjali.”

Rekha formally launched the album and Lata Mangeshkar expressed her gratitude to the actress for gracing the occasion. While Sonu Niigaam was held up at a shoot, his wife Madhurima was present. Others present included the full Indian contingent of the album’s singers (which comprise Usha Mangeshkar, Hariharan, Suresh Wadkar, Rekha Bhardwaj) as well as Mayuresh Pai, the music director.

Among the guests were veteran composers Ravi and Anandji, Kiran Shantaram, Lalit Pandit, Talat Aziz, Shilpa Rao, Vishal Bhardwaj and Kunal Ganjawala.
