ABOUT 700 SME, priority and private banking clients of Standard Chartered Bank celebrated Deepavali recently at the Shangri-La Hotel - and helped raise funds for the bank's Seeing is Believing programme.
The global fund-raising initiative - a collaboration between Stanchart and the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness - aims to raise US$20 million to help 20 million people suffering from avoidable blindness in more than 20 countries.
Acclaimed Pop Bollywood singer Sonu Niigaam put on the evening's star performance and led a charity auction.
Some of the items auctioned included Sonu's autographed framed T-shirt, photo and music CDs.
In the spirit of giving, Stanchart matched client donations dollar for dollar.
Stanchart has so far raised more than $150,000 in Singapore for Seeing is Believing from staff and client donations including proceeds from the Deepavali charity auction.
The bank is committed to raising US$1 million over five years to help provide accessible and effective eyecare services for the underprivileged in Kolkata, India.
Stanchart regional CEO for South-east Asia and Singapore Ray Ferguson said: 'As we celebrate Deepavali, it is important that we remember the less privileged and pass on the spirit of giving to the younger generation.
'The bank has benefited from Singapore's economic success. We are very conscious of this and - in return - are committed to contributing to the community that has supported us.
'We are also proud of the many long-established partnerships we have with our customers and the community, and we are even more delighted to partner our clients in making a real difference in the communities we operate in.'
