Amar's New Album - ' Show It Off '

The 28 year-old daughter of Punjabi singer Mangal Singh, famed for his hit track Rail Gaddi, sheds all pretences and says her upcoming album is a Hindi-Pop compilation that can reach out to everyone. Despite having done loads of fusion collaborations, she doesn't feel the need to brand this one into any pseudo genre. While sitting in the studio dabbling with sounds with Bollywood playback singer Sonu Nigam, she chats about how the Asian Underground movement in London 7 years ago, has in a way, brought her back to India. "The movement involved a lot of hip hop, R 'n' B, drum 'n' bass mixed Hindi vocals and instruments, and yet didn't end up sounding fusion-heavy. It had a natural sound," she says. Talvin Singh was one of the pioneers of the movement, and Amar had a chance to meet him at a club in East London. She went on to collaborate with him on his album Anokha Soudz, where her Hindi vocals feature on track, Jaan. "It was a crazy time in London.

English girls used to come to clubs wearing sarees! Now, it's different. The Indian sound is already global," says Amar.

At 14, Amar had sung a Hindi version of Whitney Houston's I will always love you, and 9 years ago fusion maestro Nitin Sawhney produced a bulk of Amar's debut album, Outside, which was strong on Hindi vocals.

Recently, influential hip hop producer in the industry, Timbaland heard some of Amar's work and wanted her to work with him on his albums, Shock Value and a sequel to it. "Timbaland loves old Hindi music. He has a huge collection of Bhangra music and RD Burman classics, and his favourite Indian singer is Asha Bhosle." Amar's sultry vocals featured on Timbaland's remixes of Nelly Furtado's Maneater and Promiscuous Girl, and will soon be on After Shock 2's track titled, Bombay.

Rapper and musician Jim Beanz, Florida-based boy band Rebel, Timbaland, Sonu Nigam and Amar's father, Mangal Singh will feature on Amar's new album, Show it Off, slated to release this May-June. It's going to be a "dancey, fun album with cheeky Hindi vocals", she promises. "The gigs in the city are going to be casual, just to see how the audience reacts to our
new sound."

Radio Mirchi announces Music Awards


MUMBAI: Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM in association with TATA Indicom announced its first music awards called the 'Mirchi Music Awards'. The awards are aimed to felicitate the deserving artists in our music industry.

Scheduled for Saturday March 28, 2009, Tata Indicom Mirchi Music Awards will witness the Best of the music talent getting crowned. The selection of the winners has been done by an august jury led by the Chairman, Javed Akhtar. The other icons in the league include Prasoon Joshi, Anu Malik, Kailash Kher, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Kunal Kohli, Lalit Pandit, Louiz Banks, Ramesh Sippy, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Shankar Mahadevan, Sadhana Sargam, Suresh Wadkar and Sonu Niigaam.

Working with Akshay nostalgic, says Farah Khan

Mumbai, March 08: Director-choreographer Farah Khan says Australian singer Kylie Minogue was “a dream to work with” in forthcoming film “Blue”, but she was even more excited to work with Akshay Kumar after a year`s gap.

The two had last come together for Farah`s directorial venture “Om Shanti Om”, where Akshay was seen in a cameo as `Khiladi Kumar`. And she didn`t miss the opportunity to work with him in the much-hyped song featuring Kylie in director Anthony D`Souza`s “Blue”.

“I enjoy working with Akshay and have always had great fun shooting with him. In `Om Shanti Om` he was a riot and sporting enough to have consented to do a cameo. We were in splits throughout when he came back in his `Khiladi Kumar` image. This was a year and a half back and when we shot again in `Blue`, it was quite nostalgic,” Farah told reporters.

The ace choreographer bonded quite well with Kylie even though they were working together for the first time.

“That`s right, we hadn`t interacted earlier but knew about each other`s work. She had seen `Om Shanti Om` and was also aware about my musical `Bombay Dreams`. Once we started working together for the `Blue` song, we gelled well quite quickly. She is a dream to work with,” Farah said.

Farah has now become very choosy when it comes to taking up choreography assignments ever since she donned the director`s hat for “Main Hoon Na” in 2004. But she has made exceptions.

In fact, one of the songs she decided to choreograph earlier also featured Akshay. The number was “Mast Kalandar” from the film “Heyy Babyy”, which was directed by her brother Sajid Khan. Of course, the song had her favourite actor friend Shah Rukh kahan making an appearance too.

“It`s always a great experience to work with Akshay since he is a fun-loving guy. Moreover, he is very professional and very punctual. There were many factors that contributed to me agreeing to work on the song and Akshay being a part of it only helped,” Farah said about accepting “Blue”.

Apart from Kylie and Akshay, the much-awaited song also features Zayed Khan, Lara Dutta and Sanjay Dutt. Composed by Oscar-winning musician A.R. Rahman, the number has been sung by Kylie and Sonu Nigam.

“The number is a mix of Western and Punjabi bhangra, hence turning out to be a great mix. Rahman has come up with a great tune again. To begin with, while Kylie sings her own portion in English, Sonu Nigam brings on a Punjabi element in the second half of the song,” she explained.

“Blue” is set to release in the latter half of 2009.

Sonu Niigaam Plays Highway Man

Kannada album Neene Bari Neene is all about Ashok Kheny's life and will have the Bollywood singer crooning to the tune of Mano Murthy. And oh, Kheny spent Rs 1 crore to make the album

Ashok Kheny has splurged Rs 1 crore on a Kannada video album showcasing his life and has roped in singer Sonu Nigam to play him.

Neene Bari Neene (Youâ¦Only You) , produced by NICE head honcho Kheny's AKK Productions, also has top model Madhuri Bhattacharya starring in it. It will be telecast on TV channels this month.

This is the first time Nigam is acting in a Kannada video, singing to the tunes of Mungaru Male fame music director Mano Murthy and lyricist Jayanth Kaykini. Vikram Razdan has directed the album.

'Time is precious'

"The album is based on my life," Kheny, who makes an appearance in one of the nine songs, told MiD DAY. "It also has a message which I want to convey to my people."

"Time is precious," he said. "I had no time to spend with my children when they were kids. And now that I have time, they are grown-up and live their own lives. I'm alone. That's what happens in everybody's life. I'm trying to tell people to use their time well. Parents should spend as many days as possible with their children."

Themes

The experimental album also weaves in themes like father-son relationship, harmony in society, cultural heritage etc and has romantic scores like Neene Bari Neene, Baa Nodu Gelathi Navilu Gariyu Mari Hakide. Philosopher and social reformer Basavanna is portrayed in a song sequence called Namma Nad.

Shot in Mysore, Madikeri, Kaveri Nisargadhama, Bangalore and even Nandi Hills, it has original visuals of Kheny's life shot since his childhood.

"Kheny, Sonu Nigam and I had lot of things in common. The passion and thoughts were alike. And I roped in Jayanth," said music director Murthy. "It's an ideal team and that's enough to make an album like this. It will be very special." Reply to Pritha

This is an excellent album of sufi songs by various artists & is a must buy !!!

The thing to notice, and which I will not have to stress on is that this album is not a Compilation of Sufi suffused songs as much as it is an assembly of some of the finest Voices peacefully invoking an audience with god. You are free to participate, as long As your method is music to the ears.

Strike Ends... Finally

It's time to pop champagne. The two warring factions [producers/distributors versus multiplexes] had lengthy discussions on Thursday, which lasted till several hours and the two parties gave their official seal to the terms and conditions, thus putting an end to the 2-month-old strike.

Bollywood Musical Score For KNKM

There are thousands of musicians out there who have composed musical pieces in our films that anyone would love to hear over and over again. No matter how many times you keep listening to this music, you are not going to get bored.

It's just amazing how music can totally take us to a different world especially when it is synchronized to the images of a motion picture.

As the countdown begins for the premiere Kahin Na Kahin Milenge, we present Music Director Nikhil to our readers.

The film produced by T-Bush, co-produced by Wency John Ferrao, and directed by T-Bush and Arif Kazi is the first Hindi Bollywood Film to be made in Kuwait. The premiere of the movie will be held on 12th June 6.30pm at Laila Gallery Cinamascape, Salmiya.

His Excellency, Mr. Ajai Malhotra, Indian ambassador to Kuwait will be the chief guest at the premiere. The star cast of the film Kiran Kumar, Shakti Kapoor, Kishore Bhanushali, Manisha Ram Kelkar, Amit Bhanushali, etc, are expected to attend.

The credit for the musical score of Kahin Na Kahin Milenge and it's soundtracks goes to the young musician Nikhil from the Bollywood industry.

The director, having a background of Western Classical, has been around for almost 2 decades now.

Nikhil got his first break in the film 'Pyar Bhara Dil' whose song 'Banke Kitab Teri' was quite popular. His journey had started since then, and there was no looking back.

The music director has been very good at composing hit songs for new singers. His superhit numbers include 'Achha Sila Diya Tune' by Sonu Nigam, 'Shukriya Shukriya' by Agam Nigam, 'Meri Pant Bhi Sexy' for Govinda to name a few

Nikhil has composed for films like 'Bewafa Sanam' which launched Sonu Nigam as a playback singer. The flowing director has now composed for over 50 Bollywood films, 100 private albums, regional films and T V Serials. He is a versatile music artist and very passionate about composing music. He had the privilege to compose for super star Shah Rukh Khan in three films 'Yeh Lamhe Judaai Ke', English Babu Desi Mem', and 'Hum Tumhare Hai Sanam'.

Nikhil has also done compositions for popular serials like 'Teacher', 'Thoda Hai Thode Ki Zaroorat Hai', 'Ajeeb Dastan' and 'Heri Pheri'. His talent got to the top of the charts with Sonu Nigam's popular album 'Jaan'. The album's popularity displays a distinct Nikhil style of music. His next album 'Yaad' with Sonu Nigam was not much of a success except for a few scores. The maestro has been doing pop albums with Abhijeet and Anuradha Paudwal as well.

Nikhil has composed jingles and background scores of various ad films, some being anti piracy, anti-smoking, and various government campaigns. He also composed Award Track music for Zee Lux Gold Awards Nite, Zee Sangeet Awards, and Apsara Awards Nite.

I will be working with two writers to whom I will give the melodies. Prakash wants songs in the background and he said that he does not want them to be too Indian. Meanwhile, I listen to a lot of Hindi music - I love A.R. Rahman and Ismail Darbar’s Devdas is my all-time favourite. But I have also already recorded Hindi songs with Sonu Niigaam and Sunidhi Chauhan for a Hollywood film shot in India, Basmati Blues ...

Sonu Niigaam Sings For - Begum Sahiba

Poonam Dasgupta & Rahul Roy will feature in India’s most expensive theatre production titled 'Begum Sahiba'
According to industry sources, the play that the producers promise has a climax never heard of or imagined before is being produced at a budget of Rs 50 lakh

Veteran yesteryear television and film actress Poonam Dasgupta - who has done over 100 films and tele serials (Notably Dil Ka Doctor with Anupam Kher, Mr Bond with Akshay Kumar, Dil Ke Jharoke Mein with Manisha Koirala & Vikas Bhalla, Fauji with Dharmendra, Ganga Kahe Pukaar Ke with Rakesh Pande, Geeta Ki Saugandh with Dharmendra and TV serials like Betaal Pachishi directed by Sunil Agnihotri, Black Cat produced by Kumar Sanu, Bus Stop Ki Raat, Commander,Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Kismat and Kya Baat Hein directed by Ramesh Sippy, Marshall with Mukesh Khanna, Nagin by Ramsays, Shri Adhikari Brothers Top Ten, Shrimaan Shrimati, Swabhimaan produced by Shobha De), Tehkikaat with Karan Razdaan, Teri Bhi Chup Meri Bhi Chup with Shafi Inaamdar, The Great Maratha directed by Sanjay Khan and the The Zee Horror Show to name a few), will return to her first love - acting after a hiatus of almost ten years

According to Flynn Remedios, publicist for Begum Sahiba, the play will set new benchmarks for theatre and will also feature a video as part of the project. “It will be one of the most splendid plays and a visual treat for viewers,” he added. Rehearsals for Begum Sahiba, produced by Saar Entertainers have been going on for about two months now and it is expected to be staged around mid-August, explained Flynn Remedios

Poonam said, “It’s like coming back home again after ten years, after a long break, I am doing something that I have always loved. Though I have been regularly getting film offers, I have consciously stayed away from filmdom. Now, I am back again with a bang in Begum Sahiba as the evergreen, quintessential Begum,”

Rahul Roy said that he was pleased to be part of Begum Sahiba. “
This is absolutely a new orgasm for me that I never experienced before.
I can imagine the thrill of acting on stage - an orgasm that I did not probably get in my Bollywood career. When you are live on stage, there are no retakes, no editing on the computer. It’s all real, all live, happening then and there.”

Actor director Babloo Mukherjee is directing the play (he also plays a character in Begum Sahiba) which also features Kishore Bhanushali (also known as junior Dev Anand), Raj Prem and Zara as a transvestite. “Begum Sahiba has got romance, charity, deceit, humour, homosexuality, infidelity, suspense, lust and a variety of other attributes,” said Babloo Mukherjee.
