Explosion - Oracle Arena Aug 8th 2009 - Sonu Niigaam, Sunidhi & Hard Kaur Rock

OAKLAND, Calif. — “Are you ready for some masti?” Sonu Niigaam shouted during his concert at the Oracle Arena Aug. 8. The audience roared in response, swept up in the rhythms of “Explosion 2009,” a nonstop blast of high energy Hindi film music, rap, bhangra and Indi-pop.

Niigam and his costars, Sunidhi Chauhan and Hard Kaur, put on a scorching show that offered up some old favorites — such as Niigaam’s trademark Rafi tribute songs and Chauhan’s fiery “Bidi” — and surprised with novelties like Hard Kaur’s dynamic raps and even a jaw-dropping Michael Jackson impersonation from Niigam, complete with moon walk.

The show kicked off at 9 p.m. with an introduction from emcee Raviraj and a brief performance by vocalist Ayub Khan, and came to life as Chauhan’s voice drifted in from offstage, building anticipation for what was to come. The young singer burst onto the stage with the animated “Hai aag yeh” and “Main saat samundar,” dressed in tight black jeans, a form-fitting black blouse and suede boots. Chauhan, like Niigaam, has been performing onstage since she was a child, and her onstage persona was breezy and confident as she boldly hit every high note with full-throated zeal.

Prowling the stage like a lioness, Chauhan cranked up the energy on songs like “Crazy kiya re,” “Dance pe chance” and the irresistible “My desi girl.”

Niigaam started his portion of the show with a long, challenging alaap marked by intimate, sinuous tones, his tenor voice sliding lightly up and down the scales as drums thundered behind him. His first song wasn’t one of his top hits — “Soniyo” from “Raaz 2” — but it set the right mood as he segued into faster material (“Aaja soniye”) and back again to the gentler strains of A.R. Rahman’s “Saathiya.” “Salaam-e-ishq” and “Om Shanti Om’s” “Main agar kahoon” were also highlights, and though Niigaam seemed at times distracted by sound problems with his earpiece monitor, it didn’t keep him from singing perfectly in tune and connecting earnestly with his audience.

Niigaam indulged the crowd’s love of old songs with “Bachna ae haseeno” and “Mere sapnon ki rani,” as well as a moving medley of Mohammed Rafi songs that included the powerful “O duniya ke rakhwale.”

Hard Kaur’s brazen blast of hip-hop was charmingly offset by a sweet grin. Accompanied by the show’s crack team of dancers, Kaur — India’s first female rapper — is a hit-maker who has appeared on the soundtracks to “Singh Is Kinng,” “Kismat Konnection” and “Ugli aur Pagli.”

She grinned nonstop as she and the dancers, in matching velour tracksuits or gold sequined hoodies, performed to the pounding beats of “Mr. Hero,” “Move your body” and “Ek glassi,” later whipping off her jacket to show off a large winged-dragon tattoo.

Saluting the Punjabis, Gujaratis and Pakistanis, Kaur laughed and said, “Don’t be segregating — South Asians in the house!”

After guest artist Gunjan sang a Pussycat Dolls version of “Jai ho,” Chauhan returned for a version of “Jhoom barabar jhoom” and “Bidi,” and Niigaam came back onstage to invite the audience to sing along to his “Kabhi alvida naa kehna.”

But the biggest surprise of the evening came when Niigaam sat by himself on a plain wooden box and beat out a pulse that morphed into the opening rhythms of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.”

Niigaam usually does impersonations of other Hindi singers at his live shows, but this time the audience was dazzled by the vocalist’s bold performance — purely Indian, but respectful of Jackson, and purely original.

Chauhan and Niigaam joined forces for a memorable, understated performance of “Mere haath mein” from “Fanaa.”

To close the show, organizers Deepak Mehta and Mannu Mehta of Mehta Entertainment, and national promoter Rocky Kaushal, joined the artists onstage, and the Mehtas announced the launch of Deepak Mehta’s new lifestyle magazine.

The show was preceded by the Global Bhangra Competition 2009, presented by Mehta Entertainment and Atwal Entertainment. The Bay Area Bhangra Club of San Jose took the top prize, followed by two Canadian troupes, PCBCA of Abbotsford, British Columbia, and Shan-e-Punjab of Surrey, B.C.

“Explosion 2009” will appear Aug. 16 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. For more information, visit www.superentertainmentinc.com or call (310) 829-2985.

Sonu Niigaam Disappointed with AirTran’s Attitude

LA Sonu Niigaam Show Now Aug. 16 Due to Flight Cancellation

LOS ANGELES — At the other end of the airline cancellation story, members of Explosion 2009 spent some harrowing hours at the Philadelphia airport.

An exhausted Sonu Niigaam recounted their travails to India-West late afternoon Aug. 2 from his hotel in Philadelphia.

After their Atlantic City, New Jersey, show ended at midnight, the troupe left around 2:30 a.m. for the hour-long drive to Philadelphia airport. They were to catch a 6.a.m. flight to Los Angeles where they were scheduled to perform the show in the evening. Little did they know they were not going anywhere that day.

They were informed at the airport that their flight was canceled. Niigaam said he was disappointed by AirTran’s attitude and service, lack of cooperation and failure to put them on an alternate flight after canceling their original one. “They have no clue about customer service…It was very pathetic,” he told India-West.

“We were at the airport from 3:45 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. (EST) just trying to figure out how to get there…keeping some hope,” Niigaam said. But nothing worked out. “We were so tired, stranded at the airport (for hours) without any rest,” he added.

However, he expressed confidence in Super Entertainment’s ability to handle the situation in Los Angeles.

Niigaam spent some time in Los Angeles prior to the tour and said he had met many important music industry people here who were going to attend the show. “Many of them had not seen a Bollywood show and were looking forward to this concert. Why did this have to happen to the LA show?” he questioned.

But he took a philosophical approach to the postponement and said, “One has to surrender to God’s will. There must be a bigger purpose in this… it teaches us patience and tolerance even though we feel like complaining,” he told India-West.

Niigaam, one of Bollywood’s top playback singers, has a large fan following in the United States. He has given several concert tours here and last performed in Los Angeles two years ago with Asha Bhonsle in a show titled “The Incredibles.”

Niigaam said performing in Los Angeles is a unique experience because the audience here is more artistic and have “Hollywood color” in them. He said he has found that when he urges the audience to sing with him, the Los Angeles fans actually sing close to his pitch and key! “When the audience understands what you are doing, the graph of that show rises to a different level,” he told India-West.

Niigaam said that many of the segments he performs in Explosion 2009 have thrilled audiences that have already seen the show. But he won’t reveal details because he wants them to come as a surprise to those who have yet to see it. “I think there is some different kind of energy and ecstasy that’s happening on this tour,” he added.

Explosion In Atlantic City

Popular Bollywood singers Sonu Niigaam and Sunidhi Chauhan as well as British-Indian rapper Hard Kaur set the stage on fire with their electrifying performances at Trump Taj Mahal Arena in Atlantic City, Bhargavi Kulkarni reports

Singers Sonu Niigaam and Sunidhi Chauhan as well as British-Indian rapper Hard Kaur enthralled audiences with electrifying performances.

Organized by Bharat Jotwani and Victor Khubani, the show was held in the packed-to-capacity arena of the famous casino near the Boardwalk.

"Trump Taj Mahal arena provided the perfect setting for this explosive sold-out concert of 5,306 attendees," Jotwani told Desi Talk. "People traveled for many hours from all over the Northeast area to attend this mind-boggling four-hour explosion."

Jotwani, who has organized many star-driven shows in the last two decades, said only a few singers can draw an audience of more than 5,000 in the tri-state area. "We called the show Explosion 2009 because of the musical star power it has," he said.

Chauhan, the first performer of the evening, began with "Chaliya" from the film "Tashan."

Dressed in a black tank top and jeans, she went on to sing her most popular songs - "Crazy Kiya Re" ("Dhoom 2"), "Desi Girl" ("Dostana"), "Dekh Le" ("Munna Bhai M.B.B.S."), "Dance Pe Chance" ("Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi"), and "Sajna Ve Sajna" ("Chameli").

The 26-year-old singer indulged fans with some dance moves, too. Pausing once in a while to prod the audience to sing along with her, she professed her love to her screaming fans. "I am so honored to be here," she said. "You are one of the best audience I have ever seen."

Next on stage was Niigaam, who was dressed in jeans, a black shirt and a silver jacket. He opened with "In Lamho Ke Daman Mein" ("Jodhaa Akbar") before moving on to "Tanhayee" ("Dil Chahta Hai"), "Kal Ho Na Ho" ("Kal Ho Na Ho"), "Saathiya" ("Saathiya"), "Tenu Leke" ("Salaam-e-Ishq'), "Main Agar Kahoon" ("Om Shanti Om") and "Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke, Phir Milenge" ("Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi").

No Sonu Niigaam show is complete without a tribute to his idol, Mohammad Rafi. Niigaam sang some evergreen Rafi numbers like "Yaad Na Jaye Bite Dinon Ki," "Sau Saal Pehle,"
"Badan Pe Sitare," and "Maang Ke Saath Tumhara."

Niigaam has recently entered into a partnership with media and software company Cinsay Inc. to market his music to Western audiences.

Hard Kaur sang her popular songs "Move Your Body" ("Johnny Gaddar"), "Agg Lage Aaj Kal De Fashion Nu" ("Haal-e-Dil"), "Glassy" "Bombay Deewana" and "Main Talli" ("Ugly Aur Pagli").

Kaur, who has now become a household name, rose to popularity as a participant in Sony Television's "Jhalak Dikhla Jaa."

She is touring with her choreographer Savio, who is also one of the background dancers.

The second half of the show once again saw heart-racing performances from Chauhan, who opened with her rendition of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You."

Niigaam started his second set with a tribute to Michael Jackson.
He sang "Billie Jean" and moon walked across the stage while the crowd begged for more.

"The world has lost one of the most entertaining and popular rock star," he said.

The show ended with Niigaam inviting all the performers, dancers and organizers on stage and introducing them amid applause and encores.

Flight Cancelled, Sonu’s Niigaam's Show Forced to Reschedule

LOS ANGELES, CA - Just as Sonu Niigaam, Sunidhi Chauhan and Hard Kaur fans were getting prepared for the drive to the Shrine Auditorium on August 2, came the news that the much anticipated “ Explosion 2009” had been postponed because the group would not be arriving in town in time because of a flight cancellation.

Manoj Kaytee of Super Entertainment informed India Journal that on the morning of the show Air Trans informed them that the flight had been dropped and they were doing all they could to move the members of the group on different airlines. However all their efforts came to naught and the organizers were left with no option but to call off the show.

Reacting rapidly to the crises the presenters of the event got to work on two fronts, the first to inform fans of the unfortunate cancellation of the show and secondly to reschedule the concert. Fortunately, they were able to rebook both the show and the Shrine on August 16. A group got busy calling ticket holders through phone numbers obtained from checks and credit card records, another scoured the various outlets to stop the sale of any remaining tickets and to inform customers of the cancellation and revised date by distributing flyers which included a letter from the airline absolving the group or the organizers of any responsibility for the scrapping of “Explosion 2009” and that it had to cancel the flight from Philadelphia to Los Angeles due to unavoidable reasons.

India Journal spoke to Niigaam in Philadelphia. He explained that on August 1 they had performed in Atlantic City, and the show had ended at the midnight hour. They had packed and rushed to Philadelphia immediately as the flight to the Southland was scheduled for 6.am the following morning. At 4 am they were informed the flight had been cancelled because of a “crew” issue and Air Trans was trying to get the group out on various airlines, a move which subsequently failed as they could not get sufficient seats. The scramble to get to L.A. continued way into the afternoon but by then the skies over Philadelphia had turned grey and not even the option of a charter remained and reluctantly the show had to be rescheduled.

The incident has only reaffirmed Sonu Niigaam’s total disillusionment with the American airline industry. Disappointed he is, but not down. Niigaam has a philosophical strain flowing through him and he said “there is an Almighty who decided the show was not to be today and is should happen on the 16th. What is beyond our control, we should surrender to and move on.” But if the already 4 sold out shows are any indication, he promised his fans in L.A. they are in for a real treat .

If nothing else, the unfortunate scrubbing of the mega event brings to light the extremely complicated and complex operational issues promoters and organizers have to deal with in arranging these ‘touch and go’ schedules. It would come as a surprise to many that this group comprises 45 members and it is no cake walk to reschedule these many passengers on a long coast to coast haul in a matter of hours. The logistics involved itself is astonishing and as much as they tried , the task to keep the show on proved to be a totally impossible which lead to the cancellation.

Needless to say , they have lost a bundle in terms of hall charges and staffing fees etc , but are determined to make good their promise to their loyal customers that “Explosion 2009” will be a spectacle they will never forget. The Shrine is now scheduled to “Explode” on August 16.

Sonu Niigaam's Massive Top Ten Hitz !!

1 Suraj Hua Maddham (The Sun Dims into Twilight) from Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum (Sometimes Laughter, Sometimes Sorrow) is my all-time favorite filmi song, which makes it my favorite Sonu Nigam song too. The haunting melody, violins, flutes, dholak and the most complex instrument of all, the ethereal human voices of Sonu and Alka Yagnik make this love ballad simply exquisite. The soulful words of a first love picturized on Shah Rukh Khan (Rahul) and Kajol (Anjali) as they confess their love for one another and imagine what their lives would be like if they were to get married is truly amazing. “This is a beautiful moment, everything is changing. The dreams, which are spilling over into reality. I kept waiting; the earth began to move. This heart lurched, my breath stopped. Is this my very first love? The ocean thirsted; the night awoke. In the heart of the flame, fire sparked to life.”

2 Saathiya from Saathiya (Beloved) it’s easy to see why Sonu won Filmfare’s Best Male Playback Award for this song. Picturized on lovers Viveik Oberoi (Aditya) and Rani Mukherji (Suhani), Sonu’s soothing and sexy voice sends shivers up one’s
spine. “Laugh again for me, softly; give me another beautiful laugh. Lying on the lawn like freshly fallen leaves, you are seven shades of spring, all rolled up in one fashion: the rain, the clouds, it's all from you. Keep laughing, season to season; keep laughing softly.”

3 Do Pal Rukha(Two Moments) from Veer Zaara is about the few moments that two lovers can actually call their love story, as their circumstances don’t allow them to be together. Sonu sings the sad duet with Lata Mangeshkar, which is picturized on Shah Rukh Khan (Veer) and Preity Zinta (Zaara). Here are some of the heartfelt lyrics. “Was that you, or was it a scent on the breeze? Was that you, or was there color bursting in all four directions? Was that you, or was it some light on the road? Was that you, or was it a song echoing in the atmosphere? Did I find you, or did I find my destination? Was that you, or was it simply a moment touched by magic?”

3 Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna from Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (Never Say Goodbye) is sung by Sonu and Alka Yagnik and picturized on Shah Rukh Khan (Dev) and Rani Mukherji (Maya). A sad and touching number, it begins with a soft piano overture. Sonu croons, “You and I know that our paths are separating. You'll live in my memories even after you're gone. Seasons come and go but the season of pain doesn't change. A mist of fragrances stays for one moment and then how they get lost in the wind. Beautiful moments, after they pass often seem like a mere dream. We could meet again sometime. You should never say goodbye. Never say goodbye.” Alka joins in and together, along with the melody, unite to form an intoxicating combination.

5 Sau Dard (A Hundred Pains) from Jaan-E-Mann (Love of My Life) is sung by Sonu and Suzanne. Sonu has outdone himself in this brilliant, beautiful yet sad song. Suzanne adds sensuality and an operatic element to her rendition. Lyrically, musically and rendition wise it is a mind-blowing poetic piece that will silence the audiences when the film reaches the theaters on October 20th. This heart-wrenching song, picturized on Salman (Suhaan) and Preity Zinta (Piya) tells of an exasperated lover showing remorse for his lost love. “A hundred pains, a hundred cures for the pain. I got it all my love, I just didn't get you. Feels like the wind has stopped blowing and like a dried up leaf on the streets of the city, I am flying around all alone. A hundred roads, but yours is missing. Let the water flow. Let time stand still. If the river has made a turn, let the shore bear it. A hundred yearnings but am not sad over you. Alone, alone, he is alone. He is alone. Walk alone, walk alone

6 Kal Ho Na Ho from Kal Ho Na Ho (Filmfare and National Awards for Best Male Playback Singer) brings tears to your eyes when you’ve seen the movie. Sonu sings Shahrukh’s (Aman) part with such passion as he says, “At every moment, life is changing its shape. Sometimes life is shadow; sometimes it is sunlight. Live each moment of it to the fullest, for the opportunity may or may not be here tomorrow. A person who loves you wholeheartedly is not easy to find. One who will do so is the loveliest miracle of all, for such beneficence may or may not be here tomorrow. Live each moment of it to the fullest, for the opportunity may or may not be here tomorrow. When someone comes to you in love, gather up the courage of your maddened heart; it will keep on pounding. But consider what this moment is: a story which may or may not continue tomorrow.”

7 Khamoshiya Gungunane Lagi (Silence has begun to hum) from One 2 Ka 4 is sung by Sonu and Lata Mangeshkar and is picturized on Shah Rukh Khan (Arun) and Juhi Chawla (Geeta). Feelings between the two friends are being to be realized and they begin to express them to each other. “Silence has begun to hum. Solitude has begun to smile. The wind whispers, it has secretly told me express the state of your heart, don't hide it from your lover. Hearing this, my eyes have begun to shy away. Whose dream has awakened within my eyes? A new life is starting with my very breath. Someone's call is being whispered by the winds. Talk of someone is hidden in my lips. Day and night, in my eyes, a shadow has begun to waver.”

8 Pal, Pal Har Pal Every Moment)from Lage Raho Munnabhai (Never Say Die Munnabhai) is a melodious, romantic piece by Sonu and Shreya Ghoshal, which has a soft, soothing effect on the listener. They sing this sweet and simple tune to the sounds of piano and guitar, making it perfect candlelight dinner music. It is picturized on Sanjay Dutt (Munnabhai) and Vidya Balan (Jhanvi). “Every moment...how will moments [between us] pass in our hearts? There is...some turbulance, some uncertainty. Oh my co-traveller/partner, I am afraid (I wish that) this night doesn't pass and morning never come; that our whole lives shrink to this moment. If you are with me then the journey...feels like a beautiful home. Iif you are with me then this sky...feels like protective shadow.”

9 Pyar Ki Ek Kahani from Krrish is also sung in the flawless and fluid voices of Sonu and Shreya and is picturized on Hrithik (Krrish) and Priyanka (Priya). It tells a simple story about a boy and a girl who have found love in each other. “Once there was a boy and a crazy girl. She started laughing and he laughed too; neither understood what was happening. What should have been left unsaid, was spoken. What should have remained unheard, was heard.”

10 Tanhayee Loneliness)from Dil Chahta Hai (The heart yearns) is picturized on Aamir Khan (Akash). The song requires Sonu to deliver high-pitched vocals yet still depict a sense of loneliness, which he accomplishes with excellence. The instrumentals are cleverly interwoven throughout. “How I stumbled on the path of the heart. All my dreams broken, all my happiness gone to sleep, my life lost. In the love I had for you I found only a punishment: Loneliness, loneliness, a vast expanse of loneliness. How many tears it has brought to my lashes? Why, when I hoped so hard, was that hope useless?”

Sonu Niigaam At Home On Raakhi With Sisters

Sonu Niigaam Wows Chicago !!

Sonu Niigaam's concert tour made a stop at the Rosemont Theatre in Chicago this past weekend and I was one of the lucky people in the front row for this sold out show. I wanted to give our readers an inside look at Sonu's 2009 US tour. It was Sonu's birthday the night before and everyone was celebrating.

Sonu Niigaam has put together an impressive line up on this tour. He's an icon and he decided to share his stage with some young, edgy talent. Sunidhi Chauhan performed before Sonu's first set. She wore red and gold in her Indo-western style and got everyone into the show.

Sonu then came on for his first of two sets of the night. He looked stylish in jeans, a silver tie and a black jacket. The crowd roared and he went into his classic Bollywood hits. He sang Soniyo, from "Raaz," followed by "Aaja Soniye" from the film, "Mujhse Shaadi Karogi".

Hard Kaur followed wearing a green hoodie over her gold sleeveless top. She pleased everyone in the audience when she sang, "Ek Glassy." Well, almost everyone.

Sonu Niigaam with Anita ChatterjeeHard Kaur is touring with her partner from "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa ," Savio. He is on stage with her as one of her backup dancers.
Next was Gunjan who sang the Pussycat Dolls version of "Jai Ho."
Sonu then followed with his second set.

Sonu is an international icon and you feel it in his performance.
He started his second set with a tribute to Michael Jackson.
He sang Billie Jean and moon walked across the stage while the crowd begged for more. Sonu was reflective of the iconic images before him tonight.
Along with Michael Jackson, he mentioned Mohammed Rafi, a Bollywood playback singer who died 29 years ago this same weekend.
Sonu then sang his classics including Dekha Yeh.

The night ended with Sonu introducing all the artists while they shared the stage. It was riveting to see this young, exciting show with so much life and energy all in one place.

After the concert, I paid a visit to Sonu backstage. Fans swarmed him asking for pictures, wishing him a happy birthday and just wanting to appreciate and be near him. He was humble, taking pictures and truly appreciating all the love and support.

Bollywood tends to love actors and it's good to see Sonu receive this attention as a musician. Sonu Niigaam has created an original, stylish show with some edge.
This tour is history being made --- if you are lucky enough to go see the show or have ever seen Sonu live, share your experience with us !!

Pen Potrait Of Sonu Niigaam

Some years ago in faridabad
On this very day
A boy named sonu, joined the world
And decided he would stay

His parents first he said hello!
In nineteen seventy three
A year of freedom ,music change
This suited him just free

He weighed just over seven pounds
And soon grew into a boy
Filled with talent and with mischief
With jokes ,laughs and joy

His family moved to delhi town
When he was still lad
At J.D Tytler school in rajendra nagar
He truly had a ball n bat

Yes sonuji was a lovely lad
Who became a versatile singer
And became a wonderful man
His wits, his charm and love of life
Make everyone a fan

He is true and loyal to his friends
Who have seen him through it all
From college to contiki trips
Parties ,music and thrill

At work he is a stand out too
His ethic is second to none
If u need a hand, he’s the guy to ask
He’ll always get it done

His confidence and character
Made him magnet in the crowd
Give him some nodes and songs
And get ready to be wowed

That sweet side also shows itself
With sonu’s love for his fans
First vijay, shyama and many more were loved
Hope on any day
Shreya and other may be set.

Sonuji you lived for thirty six years
Of happy ,healthy and fun
And everyday I wake up thrilled
That for me you are the one

And so today let's celebrate
the plces you've come from
All while looking forward to
The fantastic time to come
