Shock Waves From Sonu Niigaam On Aug 2 At The Shrine

The much touted show "Explosion 2009" featuring Sonu Niigaam and Sunidhi Chauhan is scheduled at the Shrine Auditorium on Aug 2. He spoke candidly toIndia Journal about the show, his career and his views on some aspects of life.

Asked how different the show is going to be from his earlier tours, Niigaam, without divulging any details , promised to "shock" Los Angeles in his new venture with Sunidhi Chauhan. He is very excited to partner with her, their very first tour together – having only performed only twice with her on stage previously in the last decade. Singing the praises of Chauhan, he promised their fans a treat , double the excitement , as he put it, than his going it alone on stage. He believes this is going to be " the finest ever musical show America has ever seen" When it was pointed out that is what people say after every one of his shows he added that that is exactly what he wants people to feel every time he comes on – forget about the previous performance and talk of the new one.

Niigaam was quick to defend his costar when a question was posed how it would be to sing with Sunidhi Chauhan after performing with a giant like Asha Bhosle. His rapid fire retort was " Yes Ashaji is a giant. But Sunidhi is also a giant – just because she is young no one can discount her talent or disqualify her." He continued to state he does not respect artists only because of age , but for the temperament and newness the they bring to music. He added that since her entry into the music arena in 1999, Chauhan has completely changed the perception of people of a playback singer and today she is not any less than her elders in the profession. He wished talented artists are recognized earlier in their lives and labeled ‘legends’ when they are young and alive , rather than when they are either old or dead and gone.

Niigaam stuck to his guns when it came to the subject of marriage. When asked if it was true he had made a statement that while he is a happily married man, marriage is only a small part of his life. His response was "Absolutely, of course." He contends anything created by man is temporary. Childbirth for example he says is natural and will go on forever , but marriage and other social practices - all have an expiry date. He said that his wife fully agrees with his take on the subject and added that he fortunately lives with people who understand him and know where he is coming from.

The musical star denies he is superstitious. If that be the case why did he add on an "i" and an "a" to his name a few years ago? That was provoked, he said, by numerology which he believes is a science based on mathematics which in itself is the infrastructure

of the laws of the universe. He is a strong supporter of the view that certain names based on numerology have a stronger appeal and register instantaneously whereas others randomly chosen are easily forgotten. He said he couldn’t imagine Amitabh Bachchan having acquired his star status with a name like, no offence meant, Rajiv Gupta, which is perfectly suited to business or in the corporate world.

Touching on his acting career which has not quite taken off as he had hoped for Niigaam said everything in life goes through a process of evolution. He thinks he did a more than decent job on the roles he has played so far but has come to realize that even if one’s work is appreciated, it takes a blockbuster to launch a film star. Since promoting a movie and making it a hit involves the collective effort of many people, its success lies, not just in the hands of the actor. He adds pensively that in the film firmament, some work – some do not, some get respect- yet they don’t work.

For that matter, he was asked why he even wanted to try and hit the big screen when he has such a good thing going in his musical career. He agreed that music is very much a part of him, but it’s not the whole of him. His success, he attributes, not just to his voice, but his attitude and his keenness to learn, respect other talents and trying to imbibe them also. Acting is another faculty he understands and which other people think he understands which is why they continue to offer him roles. What he still needs to learn about the movie industry is making wise decisions, what to accept and which to reject, something he thinks he is getting better at day by day.

The recession , according to the singer, has not affected the industry in any way. He said he has been doing plenty of shows because when the chips are down, people wish to be entertained and if one provides it , the fans will be there however bad the economy. At a personal level the financial downturn has had no impact on Sonu Niigaam because he claims he does not have too many vices. All his expenses are work related and even purchases for his wardrobe are strictly for shows . otherwise he states he is quite happy and comfortable in his 7 year old jeans and a shirt.

Is it true that Sonu Niigaam is moving away from playback singing? In a way, yes, was his answer. He proclaims he does not want to be led by his work or his profession. He wants to be in total control of his life and not suffer the fate of many others including Michael Jackson who had let their image take over their life and personality and ended up either dying prematurely or becoming frustrated individuals as they grew older. Over the past four years he has been extremely (twice) cautious about what he is doing, how much work he does and has made himself completely exclusive. He concluded with " Money will keep coming anyway, it is not the priority – it is about your own self gratification. If I can control my work , I am a much happier man."

'Sonu Niigaam doesn't look for challenges'

Busy with his Explosion 2009, the ongoing musical concerts across America, Sonu Nigam takes time out for an exclusive chat with Buzz18 on his birthday on Thursday.

So, how does it feel to grow a year older - enriched, experienced, content?
All of the three…I have learnt to live in harmony with the universe.

Tell us more about the ongoing Explosion 2009. How has the response been?
It's been a strange surprise. We expect all our tours to do well. But when it is your 11th tour in a country in the last 15 years, it is an achievement in itself. People expect the world from you, and you can't let them down. I always believe, as long as I am true to myself, I'll be able to keep surprising them again and again. And that is how the response has been in the first two concerts of Explosion 2009. The new act of mine for this tour this time has been 'phenomenal'.

Any surprise element you have planned for the upcoming concerts?
Let it remain a surprise!! Or check Youtube for that matter. That's the latest discussion on it.

After so many years of practice and experience, has the definition of music changed for you?
Very profound question... Earlier I considered music as an artform. Now, I know it's actually an 'open door' to a rare state of consciousness, bestowed upon some rare blessed ones. Fortunately I am one of the blessed ones to have experienced it from my birth. No wonder "sur and taal" are Greek to the 99 per cent of the world and the remaining 1 per cent who understand it, have a completely different perception of the world as compared to the rest.

Sonu Nigam loves challenges. So, what keeps you busy besides live shows and playbacks?
Sonu doesn't look for challenges. He only looks for newer opportunities to learn and experience. There is difference. Former is to prove a point to the world, which I consider inconsequential. The latter, to enrich myself… Otherwise, introspection, prayers to the One, workouts, music making, reading, playing with my 'genius' son, travelling etc keep me busy.

We still get to hear you giving playbacks in Bollywood. But why did you disappear from the Indipop scenario?
First we need to clarify the definition of Indipop. In India any private commercially viable album is termed as Indipop. Even a bhangra is called Indipop here. Last year I released Classically Mild, Rafi Resurrected and Maha Ganesha in a row. I also sung a ghazal with Talat Azizji in his album Caarvaan e Ghazal, all of which can be found in both India and abroad. The problem is, media is so caught up with films and gossip that music has taken a serious backseat. Unless you make controversies, you are not talked about. Fair enough, but there is a lot of great music happening everywhere besides film music. We shouldn't ignore that.

Any other album coming up after Classically Mild?
Yes, Time Travel in Hindi and Neene Bari Neene in Kannada.

What are the forthcoming films you have given playback for? Any favorites?
Can't remember besides 3 Idiots, Blue, Raavan and Accident at Antop Hill.

There were rumors about you planning to settle down in America. How far is it true?
I haven't really left India. I am just exploring the profession that has given me so much.... It's an awesome feeling.

Do you think there aren't many challenges left in Bollywood? Have you got bored with how things work in this industry?
Kind of both... Music needs to separate from Cinema in India to get its due. Our classical musicians and singers, ghazal maestros, Sufi and folk singers are waiting in the alley to get their dues.

Would you consider playing a judge once again for a reality show or would you prefer hosting a chat show on TV?
Some interesting concepts have come my way. I'll see if I'm tempted enough. Frankly, I've come to believe in the theory of 'less is more'.

You have already created ripples singing on stage with your son Nevaan. Would you like to see him as a singer?
What if he wants to venture into any other field of art?

I want him to first know the secret of the world that I have come to know. Then he can decide whether it is worth it to become anything in the outside world!

What about acting? Would you like to do a film again?
People surely want me to do something sincere or else they wouldn't be still sending me scripts. Well, I personally think that it's time for at least one genuine and heartfelt project!

Last question... what would you wish for yourself on your birthday?
An uncorrupted, free, content, in-love and in-prayer soul!

No big Movie Star Shows This Summer ??

There seems to be no recession when it comes to Hollywood movies across America but it is quite a different scene for Bollywood star-driven shows. It looks like the year 2009 will pass without a single blockbuster show featuring the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan or Shah Rukh Khan
Bharat Jotwani, who along with Victor Khubani organised The Unforgettable Tour last year, featuring Amitabh, Madhuri Dixit, Abhishek Bachchan Aishwarya and Preity Zinta in Atlantic City and New York, says the movie stars are not sensitive to the economic situation in America and Europe.
"The big reason why we aren't having the star-driven shows is simple," Jotwani says, "the Bollywood stars are simply not willing to reduce their price. There are fans out there, and they are in thousands, who will save diligently to pay $100 to $200 to see their favorite stars perform. The fans will make sacrifices, they will save money for these shows. But the producers of the show know too well that $100 or $200 tickets won't help us break even, even if there are over 5,000 attending the show."
Their last star show, The Unforgettable, drew over 18,000 people in Atlantic City and the Nassau Coliseum.

The sponsors and television stations will help to navigate a show towards making a decent profit or break even, he says. "Given the recession, it is difficult to get the support from these sponsors."

Jotwani and Khubani are organising August 1 the Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan and Hard Kaur show Explosion 2009 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Movie stars in India can afford to demand their usual remuneration, Jotwani says, because large industrial houses and mass circulated newspaper chains back up the shows.

"We don't have such a thing in America and Canada like a conglomerate or a mega newspaper chain coming on as sponsors," Jotwani adds. "I wish the stars would realise how much the audiences overseas love to see them perform."

Kavita Celebrates Sonu Niigaam’s Birthday

I would like to welcome all the readers and listeners of KavitaChhibber.com to a special edition of our emag. Today is July 30th 2009 and it’s my pleasure once again to wish Sonu Niigaam a very happy birthday on not just my behalf but millions of fans world wide, especially those who have written in by the thousands.
Last year when I did a surprise birthday special for Sonu, it was something that I just impulsively decided to do, because the more I got to know him, the more I could see what a special man he is..
Sonu’s persona goes far beyond the music that has made him a household name across the continents. It’s evident in his sense of humor, his sharp wit and a deep thinking, intelligent mind. He is an outstanding mimic-I also don’t know many men who can sing duets all by themselves-but he sure can! It is not surprising then why he is so loved. It is evident by the packed arenas of screaming fans that throng to his concerts. It’s also evident in the comments we receive about him from his fans.

Sonu Niigaam On Explosion 2009

"I have ceased to exist," says Sonu Nigam He is rehearsing for Explosion 2009, to be held at the Trump Taj Mahal Arena August 1; he takes off some minutes to talk about the show to be held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, detailing how it differs from his previous concerts.

"It is god who is working through me for this show. I wonder if anyone should even call it my show," he says.

He says god is an invisible partner in all his shows, whether it is a solo show or a concert with other artists -- in this instance, Sunidhi Chauhan, and Hard Kaur, the British Punjabi pop star.
"But this time," Nigam adds, "I particularly feel that god is directing me in everything I am doing, even the smallest move or gesture is coming from elsewhere; I am sure it is from god."

And then there is the question of rashi.

"I am a Leo, and so are Sunidhi and Hard Kaur," Nigam says, chuckling. "Imagine then the vibrant atmosphere on the stage. This is the first time I am performing with the lead artists in a show all of whom are Leos. This factor alone is enough to create unique magic."

Explosion 2009 is the only major Bollywood show this summer in America; in fact, it could be the only big show of its kind the entire year. The year has seen so far Asha Bhosle perform in Philadelphia and a few cities. Kailash Kher , who had a rousing performance at the Brooklyn Prospect Park, is going to several American cities too, and Jagjit Singh had a stellar performance in a few cities.

In a year without a star driven show, Explosion 2009 not only stands out but could also create quite an excitement.

A typical Sonu Nigam show is a mixture of his old and new hit songs, a tribute to his idol Mohammad Rafi, mimicry, and electrifying dance movements. Occasionally his father too appears in the concert, singing a Rafi song or two.

"I never really reveal what is in my new shows," Nigam says. "But there will be surprises. Even those who have seen many of my past performances should feel that I have given something new each time. That way, they have reasons to attend my concerts next year, and years after that."

He has performed across America and Canada for over a decade, at times with the legend Asha Bhosle, at the beginning of his Bollywood career and also a few years ago when he was at the height of his popularity. He has had several solo shows in major cities. And he has shared the stage with Kunal Ganjawala and Kher on different occasions.

"I realised long ago that even if I am the biggest attraction in a show, I should not monopolise it," Nigam says. "Whether I am performing with a well-known singer or a relatively less known artist, I follow certain principles. If we agreed on something right at the time a show was conceived, I will adhere to the agreements. If I have to sing eight songs, I will never try to sing nine, for that matter even eight and half, even if the audiences are clamoring for it.

"I would rather sing seven and half songs," he continues, "and let other artists have fun with their numbers. It is very easy in this business to be swayed by fan adulation and overlook that one's ego is bloating. Whenever I feel tempted, I remember what my parents had ingrained me from my childhood -- to share success with others, to be genuinely humble, and fear god."

When he was beginning his movie playback singing career, Nigam recollects with a gentle laugh, his mother had told him: 'You are not really cut for the movie industry.'

"I come from the Kayastha [a caste] community," he adds. "We are better known for our education and working in the administrative services. Given those factors, I am surprised from time to time what I have been able to achieve in the film industry in particular and the entertainment industry at large. "

Bharat Jotwani, who is hosting the Atlantic City show with entrepreneur and restaurateur Victor Khubani, says Nigam is a natural draw on the stage.

"His appeal is phenomenal," Jotwani adds. "He energizes the audiences in no time."

Jotwani, who has organised many star-driven shows in the last two decades, says only a few singers can draw an audience of more than 5,000 in the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut tristate area.

"We called the show Explosion 2009 because of the musical star power it has," he says. "Apart from Sonu who continues to be the most successful singer in the Hindi film industry, we have another big success, Sunidhi Chauhan.

"I look at her as an actress who can dance and sing," he continues. "She is good looking and she knows how to whip up the audiences emotions. She has had many major hits in the last two or three years in films like Omkara, and I am sure the audiences are expecting a lot from her."

As for Hard Kaur, he says, "the younger audiences will go crazy for her."

How is that a high profile show such Explosion 2009 has just one performance in the tristate area?

"When you look at how much we have spent on the show, and when you consider how popular these artists are, it is logical to think of a second venue, in New York or on Long Island," Jotwani confesses. "We wanted to have a second show. But there are too many things going on in Sonu's career, and given the fact how busy he is, we could not get the dates that matched the availability of prestigious venues. In summer, the large auditoriums go booked many months in advance."

Art of whistling and the world of Hindi Cinema

Among other great songs based on whistles that the Hindi cinema has produced in the recent memory is '' Kiska Hai ye Tumko Intezaar main hoo Na''From Main Hoon Na !!
Indeed whistling as an accompaniment in the Hindi cinema may be making intermittent appearances but whenever it has done, it has indeed recreated the image of gay-abandon and brought a smile on the frowning faces.
