Sonu Nigam Wins Best Singer In The First Bangalore Times Film Awards
The first edition of the Bangalore Times Film Awards celebrates the best in the Kannada film industry
The south edition of the Filmfare Awards may be around the corner, but here's a celebration of cinematic talent chosen by the people who matter: You, our reader. That is the essence of the first-ever Bangalore Times Film Awards, instituted by the Times of India. Over the course of a month and half — from the time the nominations were announced in the Bangalore Times, till voting closed, readers voted on www.itimes.com/polls for who they thought deserved the top honours in Sandalwood in the year gone by. The winners were then selected based on our vote and 7.9 lakh online votes.

Kiccha Sudeep's first attempt at comedy in Only Vishnuvardhana had readers voting him the Best Actor Male. Sudeep said, "When I was told by the Bangalore Times that people voted me the Best Actor, it felt good. Recognition that comes from the people is always the best."
The Srinagara Kitty-Ramya starrer Sanju Weds Geetha landed Ramya a winner in the Best Actor Female category. Ramya, whose portrayal of a victim of abuse made her the clear winner, said, "I want to congratulate all my fans who voted for me because through my win, they win too."
Best Film — Sanju Weds Geetha
Five films in very different genres fought it out in this category. But it was the issue of child abuse as dealt with in the socio-drama Sanju Weds Geetha that struck a chord among our readers who voted for the Best Film. Produced by Pramod Narayan and Murali Mohan, Sanju Weds Geetha swept six awards at the Bangalore Times Film Awards 2011. "I thank the Bangalore Times for giving us wide coverage and nominating our film in many categories. We had a good team and I thank everyone, especially the technicians, for their work in the film. Shreya (Ghoshal) and Sonu (Nigam) sang beautifully to Jassie Gift's tunes. Ramya did such a fantastic job in the film. Thank you," said Pramod.
Best Director — Pawan Kumar (lifeu ishtene)
When debutant director Pawan Kumar set out to make a dark comedy about the youth, he had the support of his mentor — director Yogaraj Bhat, who also co-produced the film. The film tells the tale of a youngster who has no set goals in life and is not sure if he wants to get married or not. "I'd like to thank everyone who voted for me and my film Lifeu Ishtene. By letting the people decide who should win, the Bangalore Times has established a very fair competition," said Pawan.
Best Music Director — Jassie Gift (Sanju Weds Geetha)
When Jassie Gift first came on to the film music scene with the Malayalam song Lajjavathiye, it became an instant hit. The song went on to have a version into several other languages, making Jassie a force to reckon with in the business of composing for cinema. The composer-singer has made inroads in Sandalwood too — his debut Hudugaata and his work on Parichaya have won him several fans. His efforts in the Kitty-Ramya starrer Sanju Weds Geetha have fetched him the Best Music Director award. He composed six songs and sung one track, Raavana Seethen Kadda. The most popular number on the OST was the title track Sanju Mathu Geetha, which had solo versions by Shreya Ghoshal and Sonu Nigam.
Best Lyrics — Kaviraj (Sanju Mathu Geetha from Sanju Weds Geetha)
In the Best Lyrics category, Kaviraj's song Sanju Mathu Geetha from Sanju Weds Geetha worked for our readers. "While I thank the Bangalore Times for giving me this award, what is most important is that the people have selected my song and voted for me. This is very encouraging," he said.
Best Singer Male — Sonu Nigam (Sanju Mathu Geetha from Sanju Weds Geetha)
In the Best Singer Male category, Sonu Nigam's mellifluous rendition for Sanju Weds Geetha stood out. Interestingly, on the six-track OST of the film, Sonu has just one song, the title track, Sanju Mathu Geetha, and that won him the award.
