Sonu Nigam's ''Jana Gana Mana'

Almost every Indian knows 'Jana Gana Mana'. Or to be more precise, the first stanza, which was officially adopted as the Indian national anthem on January 24, 1950. Ironically, hardly anyone knows the four stanzas that follow. If you too, are unaware of these riveting, soul-stirring verses, then here's a golden opportunity: the full anthem — as it was written in 1911 by Rabindranath Tagore — will be played on Times Now immediately after the Prime Minister's Independence Day speech.

There will be a repeat telecast on the News Hour at 9pm. The anthem will also be played through the day on Radio Mirchi and is also available on www.timesofindia.com.

'Jaya Hey', a unique, limited edition rendition of these verses — produced by Saregama, and presented to the nation by The Times of India — was released by Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Friday. It features 39 of India's best loved voices — from Hindustani classical maestros Girija Devi and Shiv Kumar Sharma to Carnatic wizards Nithyashree Mahadevan and M Balamuralikrishna, from playback singers Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik to folk singers Lopamudra Mitra and Lakhandas Baul.

The video has already received thousands of hits on TOI's wbsite. The enthusiastic response came as no surprise to industrialist Harshavardhan Neotia, who had conceived the idea of presenting the complete anthem.

"There is something about the national anthem that brings a lump to one's throat. We have been singing it right through school. Yet, its appeal has only grown," he told TOI.
