Sonu Nigam Sings For Adult Literacy

Actor-producer Anil Kapoor is extremely elated to receive an award at the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards, held in Los Angeles, USA, on Sunday evening. “I didn’t expect this, but it’s a great honour for me. I’m probably the only Indian here who has got an award. It’s one of the biggest
accolades for an actor, and I’m honoured and blessed to receive my trophy,” he gushes on the phone line from LA.

“I didn’t know how I’d be able to attend the do because my schedule was really tight. I had a couple of engagements in Mumbai, and without completing them, I couldn’t have taken the flight out. But it’s all been worth it.”

The actor was to take the flight to LA on Thursday and reach on Friday. But he postponed his trip by two days as he had committed to shoot a film on adult literacy at Film City, Goregaon, on Saturday afternoon.

The film is a public interest project, helmed by director-actor-producer Farhan Akhtar. It also features actors Shabana Azmi, Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra along with Anil.

Scriptwriter-lyricist, and Farhan’s father, Javed Akhtar, has written the lyrics for the video. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have composed the track, which has been rendered by singers Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam. The film has just been completed and will be aired shortly on leading channels across all genres.

“It was a noble cause for which Farhan and his team had spoken to me. I felt it was a gracious way to give back to society. We’re trying to spread an important message about adult literacy through the video,” says Anil.

“Today, if we want our next generation to be educated, we have to ensure that adults understand the meaning and importance of literacy. They must value education and strive to get their kids into schools as early as possible. As celebrities or public figures, we have to make our efforts to help the society. It’s a touching video that will connect with viewers from every age group and demographic. Javed saab’s words are magical too.”

Sonu Nigam's Musical Credits For India's Republic Day!

“Bharat humko jaan se bhi pyaara hai, sabse nyara gulistaan humara hai “, humming these lines spurts exuberance in the heart of every Indian and brings out a feeling to do something maverick for the motherland which can add another feather to the cap of the country. As we are celebrating our 64th Republic Day this year here are the top five soulful patriotic movies and top five songs soaked in the color of Indian flag.

There are a countless number of patriotic songs used in Bollywood movies and each one is in a way better than the other. Indian filmmakers from time to time shells out quintessential movies on patriotism and revives the sense of nationalism in every Indian. The Indian cinema plays a very substantial role in awakening its citizens and make them remember about the sacrifices and relentless effort our martyrs and freedom fighters made to free our motherland from the colonial rule.

1)Haqeeqat(1964)
There can be no other movie to talk about first then the movie Haqeeqat. This movie directed by Chetan Anand is at the acme considering the other nationalistic movie. The movie was based on the 1962 Sino-Indian War. It won the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film in 1965. The story goes that there are Indian soldiers in the hilly terrain of Ladakh who are considered dead but are rescued by Ladakhi tribesmen and by Capt. Bahadur Singh .They are asked to retreat from their post as the Chinese have surrounded them. Capt. Bahadur Singh and his girlfriend Angmo (Priya Rajvansh) die holding the Chinese at bay so that their comrades can retreat to safety. But even the retreating soldiers are heavily outnumbered and give up their lives for the country.

The songs in this movie are one of its kind and with a very emotional meaning to it. Maestro Mohammad Rafi gave his heart and soul to the song and belted out the best from his kitty.Kar chale hum fida is that one song which makes tear roll out of your eyes even if you are not in a mood to cry.

2)Rang De Basanti
RDB hit the silver screen in 2006 and being youth centric got rave reviews. The movie had a noticeable impact on Indian society. There was a significant increase in public ire towards government and politicians for constantly being mired in corruption and bureaucracy and their inefficiency in providing basic amenities. Intense political discussions spurred on by the film`s influence were observed in these patterns.

The songs of this flick were filled with alacrity of nationalism. Especially, the title track was very frisky made the listeners to simply shake a leg on it. The lyrics were inspirational and appealing. Many young Indians could relate well to the characters of this film.

3)Chak De India(2007)
A well seasoned flick directed by Shimit Amin, is a story of a tainted Indian hockey player who got a bad name due to some unwanted reason after a disastrous loss to the Pakistani hockey team, Khan is ostracized from the sport. He and his mother are further forced from their ancestral home by angry neighbors. Seven years later in an attempt to redeem himself, Khan becomes the coach for the Indian women`s hockey team with the goal of turning its sixteen contentious players into a champion team. The movie set a very good example of team spirit and to never disparage in life no matter what the circumstances are.

The title track of this movie is mind boggling and well sung by Shukwinder Singh. It leaves the listeners enchanted with the spirit of jingoism.

4)Border (1997)
A blockbuster movie directed by JP Dutta is an adaptation from real life events that happened at the Battle of Longewala fought in Rajasthan (Western Theatre) during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 and Bangladesh Liberation War. The story is a poignant account of how the Indian soldiers fought the fight of their own mind of love from the family and their own dreams. The forte again very enticing and mesmerizing, the lyrics written by Javed Akhtar is sanguinely soulful.

5)Lagan (2001)
Lagan is the sordid story of the Indian peasant’s sufferance prior to Independence. The British had imposed heavy taxes on a poor, barren village of Gujarat which the villagers were unable to pay. When they told the British of their inability to pay they were given a wager. They were to play cricket with the British. If they won, for three years the tax would not be levied. The villagers united to learn the new game and defeated the British and so got their request fulfilled.

When we talk about films how we can forget the deftly made Bollywood patriotic songs. Here are five most amazing pieces that will definitely elevate your soul.

6)De Di Hume azadi, bina khadig bina dhhal, Saabarmati ke Sant tu ne kar diyaa kamaal" This song is from the movie Jaagruti(1954) in beautiful lyrics of Pradeep and sung by Asha Bhosle . This song is almost synonymous to Mahatma.

7)Kar chale hum Fida Jano tan saathiyoon Crooned by the ace Mohammad Rafi and lively lyrics of Kaifi Azmi this song is from the movie Haqeeqat(1964).

8)Bharat humko jaan se bhi pyara hai
This nimble song is from the movie Roza(1992) and sung by Hari Haran, the lyricist is P R Mishra.

9)Chak de India A very electric and vibracious song, sung by Shukwindar Singh, lyricist Jaideep Sahni and is from the movie Chak De India.

10)Mera raang de basanti chola
This song is totally drenched in patriotism and an all time favourite of Indians. This is from the movie The Legend of Bhagat Singh and
sung by Sonu Nigam

All those who attended this concert were in for a rocking time, as Sonu Nigam made sure it was one fun evening!

Later, he took requests from people, who asked for some of his older numbers like Bijuria, Yeh dil and others.

For Aaj Ki Raat, he even sang in a girl's voice! Patriotic songs were also much in demand, as was Har Ghadi. But the best part of the evening was reserved for much later, when he asked guests to suggest names of vegetables and weaved them into songs, in the inimitable styles of Bappi Lahiri, Himesh Reshammiya, Anu Malik and others!

Sonu Nigam Gives Due Credit To Dhunush's Kolarveri Di!

Singer Sonu Nigam was recently performing at the Navy Ball in New Delhi, when the audience repeatedly asked him to sing Dhanush’s hit song Kolaverdi Di. Sonu at first ignored the requests and continued with his performance. But the requests started getting louder when they spotted a beaming Nevaan (his son) at the backstage. Little Nevaan has already got quite a following on Youtube after he sang a baby version of Kolaveri Di on Youtube. But then, sources say,Sonu shocked them all by announcing that neither he nor his son will sing the song.

“Recently Sonu while performing in a Navy Ball in Delhi, had to stop the show, as the people were loudly screaming for Kolaveri Di and Nevaan, (who was back stage). Sonu was very touched, but didn’t sing, nor indulge in the song out of respect for the original creators of this song. He knows that the song can never be Neevan’s or his. It’ll always be a Dhanush song and Sonu acknowledges that fact. He explained that to the crowd, who understood it after a while and let him continue with his performance,” the source says.

When DNA got in touch with Sonu, he too admitted that such an incident did happen, but he said that this is a decision that he would stick to all the time.

“They ask me to sing it everywhere because my son has sung the cutest version of it and they see the connect. I smile, and decline politely,” he said.

Rekha At Mohini Chabria's Restorante Launch!

Sonu Nigam Vie For A Southern Chartbuster!

The song Appadi Podu from the Tamil film Gilli sung by Kay Kay and Anuradha Sriram was a rage for quite some time.

And judging by the kind of response the songs from the south are getting from Appadi Podu to Dhinka Chikka and the most recent Kolaveri Di, there are two people who have pitched for the rights of the song Appadi Podu.

While one story says Akshay Kumar has taken over the rights, another version says Sonu Niigaam, is said to have taken over the rights of the song. Sonu Sood too, is in the league of the people who want the rights to the song.

He wants the song for his upcoming film Lucky Unlucky. We are not too sure as to who really has the rights. Will the true buyer put his hand up please?

Sonu Nigam At Aamby Valley City New Year Celebrations!

Sonu Nigam & Bickram Ghosh In 2012!

The year 2011 saw the rise of independent acts. The percussionist Bickram Ghosh talks to Shana Maria Verghis about how it affects him. One of his new projects, involves a rising star, the Scottish vocalist, Rachel Sermanni

Haven’t had a New Year resolution for years,” remarked the tabla master Bickram Ghosh. He is jump starting the year 2012, with a unique collaboration at the British Council on January 5.

Him on a multi-percussion set, with two very different vocalists. One of them is the Assamese singer Papon, who has a distinctive style of his own.

And there is Rachel Sermanni, a young (barely 20-year-old), Scottish singer, who writes and sings. She has worked, what is more, with one of 2011s nu-Brit acts, Mumford and Sons.

The trio, who perform under the name, Troikala, were put together by Sony Music. And an album is already in the offing.

Ghosh explained that for him personally, the show will be “an audacious blend of artistes.” And that, “Everyone was so chilled about moving into other spaces, that it made things very easy.”

Rachel, he described as “a beautiful vocalist.” As for him, “I’ve never done done anything connected with Scottish folk before. But Rachel wrote a song called, What Is Waiting, before she had arrived in India. And I did the melody for it. In a matter of four or five days, we were in the studio recording.”

As for Papon and him, he remarked, “With us, it is more like spiritual expression. We try to weave stories into what we are doing. I moved from using tabla in the centre space, to multi-percussion.”

He explained, “I’m not playing the way I normally do on stage here. I stand, and play across various instruments. So the sound is more important than content. The soundscaping becomes different.”

Ghosh went on, “This means that instead of creating a specific tihai, as one would with tabla, I have some fun with various sounds. And it is all totally unchartered territory. So one is completely free to interpret.” With tabla, which has a unique personality, he said, “One brings on board a strong centre.”

The percussionist wrapped another music project involving the Vande Mataram. And also has “three films with Sonu Nigam, along with two Bengali ones.” Nigam and he were working on a music project about two years ago. Then the film came along. He said, “I am not bullshitting. But we did have lots of chemistry. And then various films happened. After that, he said we could compose together.”

During the December just over, Ghosh and Rituparno Ghosh the film director, collaborated on a Jana Gana Mana project, he said, “Marked the hundredth year of the National Anthem.” Ghosh also shared that, “December 27 in 1911, was the first time when the anthem was performed in a public space. We held a musical at the Town Hall in Kolkata.” It was apparently a very lavish production.

Last year was major for a surge in independent Indian artistes. Particularly in the global music field.

A trend that was egged on by the internet. Ghosh commented, “That is the best news for me. Since it is my space. I predicted it would happen. And things would get even better. As people get familiar with sounds that are not from Bollywood.” Young people he remarked, “Are listening to Bollywood. But they are also listening to great international music alongside. This raises standards of listening.”

He concluded, “That is why Midival Punditz or a Karsh Kale gets to figure in Bollywood. I cannot predict how long this trend will continue. But the good thing, is that it will train the ear, to cue into the background music. And after that, the instrumentalist will become just as important as the vocalist.”

Sonu Nigam, Kavita & Subramaniam Working Music!

He registered as a general practitioner after passing out of Madras Medical College but violinist and composer L Subramaniam is better known for storming the world music scene and collaborating with artists such as Yehudi Menuhin. Subramaniam, who gave a concert during the music season after nearly 20 years, performed at Krishna Gana Sabha on December 31.

You were one of the earliest musicians to get into fusion music which is not popular in sabhas here. Do you think purists will ever accept fusion?

There are many styles of singing in Carnatic music. Similarly, fusion as a style is popular in the west. If the purists listen to it with an open mind, fusion music will become acceptable here. Artists abroad keep experimenting with instruments and styles. No such innovations are seen during Chennai's music season.

You performed at this year's music season after a long time. Why the break?

Till the passing away of my father Lakshminarayanan in 1992, I used to perform regularly during the season. After that, we started organising a music festival in his memory. It was held at Music Academy every year on January 2 and when the music festival went international, I did not have time to perform in December.

Now that the ethnic conflict has ended, do you plan to go back to Jaffna in Sri Lanka where you grew up?

I will train musicians in Jaffna if I get a chance. My first concert was at the Murugan temple in Jaffna. In 1994, I performed in Colombo at the invitation of the then president Chandrika Kumaratunga. During that visit, I went to the Colombo radio station to look for my father's recordings. Though he was a famous violinist, none of his records were there. It is sad that many works of Tamil artists and ancient manuscripts of the classics were destroyed during the conflict.

What are you working on now?

(Kavita answers) We are bringing out a set of 10 DVDs on global music, probably by June. I do solos as well as duets with Sonu Nigam, Pandit Jasraj and Lucky Ali. The lyrics are by Javed Akhtar. We are also setting up a music school in Bangalore where all forms of music will be taught, but the violin will get importance.

Your son Ambi is doing well, do you have particular plans for him?

Ambi has been interested in music from childhood. But one day he said he didn't want to become a violinist. So I asked him to put his violin in the cupboard and learn other things, including how to climb trees. After two days he was back to playing the violin and has not looked back since. I will teach him all the techniques I know. He has already released an album and has got awards.

You studied medicine but did you practice? When did you realize that you wanted to be musician full time?

I registered after finishing MBBS but I never practised medicine. During my second year of college, I met a foreign violinist at the Egmore museum who asked me join him and even offered me a scholarship. When I went home to tell my mother, she said I could go abroad after showing her my MBBS degree certificate. My dream of getting a degree in western music was delayed but my mother was happy.

Sonu Nigam 's Love For Acting!

Seven years after the release of his last film, Love In Nepal, Sonu Nigam is thinking of returning to acting again.

He has apparently been offered the lead role in a film directed by Akashdeep. When asked, he admits, "Akash is very keen on it. It's a musical. It will be a pleasure if things work out. There is a serious surge of proposals lately. I am looking for bound scripts because I feel I'm too sincere in whatever I do and I deserve similar treatment." Sonu was recently offered the lead role in David Dhawan's Chashme Baddoor which he turned down. "The sudden surge of offers is due to the recent appreciation of my performances at the last six award functions last year, comic timing, etc. That's how Chashme Baddoor came my way."

Sonu adds, "Love in Nepal was my last film and the only worthy film. My agenda is art. Nothing else. I die when I work on something. I have to have equally driven people around me. It's disappointing to see a 100 days and crores of rupees worth time and effort gone nowhere due to some discrepancies. But I guess I had to learn one most important thing from it; the art of saying no when you are in doubt." Has he learnt the art of saying no? "Yes. I was naive and too soft on friends and elders. Now I understand the bigger repercussions of a project gone wrong. Art, great scripts and working with the most talented people is what I am looking at. Money is no criteria at all."

Sonu Nigam Sings ' God' For Krrish 2!

Rakesh Roshan's Krrish 3 is the talk of the nation, as it's the third movie in the superhero series. While the shooting of the film is on, the makers are also working in full swing with respect to the music of the film. Rajesh Roshan, who always composes music for his brother Rakesh Roshan's films, recently recorded a song for Krrish 3. The song in question is called 'God Allah Bhagwan' and is sung by Sony Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal with lyrics by Sameer. The song apparently has all it takes to become a chartbuster.

Says Rakesh Roshan, "Right now we have just recorded the song. In fact it's really too soon to say anything about the picturisation in the film. All I can say is that Sameer has given the lyrics to the song with Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal on vocals while the music is being done by Rajesh Roshan."
